Wtf? Damn, man. Just sit Fox the rest of the year too so he can get surgery on his finger, I guess.

I am guessing her will just get his surgery before the season is over now.

Really hope this is some freak one-off and not a harbinger.

If we shut Fox down too you're about to see a GOAT tank down the stretch from Mitch and Keldon.

Apparently people w/ DVT are prone to more in the future.  But there is medication to help...who knows, if on a scale of 1-10 a sprain is a 1 and  Greg Oden's knee/foot issues are a 10, this is probably a 5?

Your first sentence answers the question - no one but Wemby and his treating doctors know. If this is a recurrent issue that he is predisposed, then that could be managed by medications.  Some people play on anti-coagulation, with known risks of bleeding. There are structural reasons to have these clots, and often for athletes, that requires surgery.

Right now?  7-8 for danger to himself and long-term complications/recurrence that could endanger his career.

He will be on anti coagulation medication minimum of 6m to life and have to have a full heme work up to told out congenital causes (usually a quick blood draw should know results quickly).

The shoulder sounds super freaking random.  I've never heard of such a thing.  So close to his lungs too...

Chris Bosh comes to mind

Not a doctor but couple blurbs from reading.

Upper extremity DVT can happen in people who have a condition called Paget-Schroetter syndrome (PSS). Typically, young athletes get PSS in the arm they use most for sports like baseball, swimming, or tennis. When you do the same motion over and over, the veins in your neck and shoulder get squeezed. This can trigger a clot.

It's important to catch and treat DVT before it causes more problems. The biggest danger is much more likely to happen with lower extremity DVT. The clot could break away from the wall of the vein and travel through your blood to your lungs. Then it's called a pulmonary embolism (PE).

Hopefully it's more structural and basketball-related.

Was this detectable when he was drafted? Considering the enormous investment and business decisions that revolve around generational talents, I would expect nothing less than a full panel and the most comprehensive screening imaginable.

Um, no. They just detected it. He played 4 days ago.

I know that. I'm asking something different. I'm asking if it was possible to know this before it was actually discovered. And if the answer is "yes it was possible" then I'm also asking "why did nobody bother to check before he possibly aggravated the DVT?"

no because he didn't have a blood clot then its currently impossible for medical science to detect a nonexistent blood clot

I'm asking if it was possible to detect how prone he would be to clotting, which is different from predicting a specific clot.

Think of it as the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning. Clots and tornadoes don't just sporadically occur, but there are ways to forecast how probable their occurrence will be based on other measurable data.

Bro he's 7'5" with like a 12 foot wingspan he's prone to all kinds of shit. He could pass every test in the book and you're still taking a risk by drafting a guy built like that.

That has always worried me as well. We have learned much more about being freakishly tall and the different things that cause and are caused by it. Marfan's, Giantism, Foot problems, etc. He didn't have the "look" of one of those George Muresan or Yao Ming types, but maybe I only made those assumptions because he likes to handle the ball and shoot 3s, and based on that assumption I figured if he had some potential health drawback the talent scouts and GMs already would've been wise to it.

His body appears to be built well. He hasn't really had any musculoskeletal injuries yet. Just little nags here and there.

But being that big has other issues. It seems like allergies fuck him up pretty bad. His conditioning/stamina doesn't appear to be there to bring it for 35 mins a night for 82 games and may never be. Now this (tbf - other, more "normal" guys have had similar issues).

I'd kill to have him play ~65 games and be healthy for the playoffs 8 times in the next 10 seasons. That is, if this franchise ever makes the playoffs again.

Spurs should 100% toss this season in the bin at this point and load manage or let Fox get his surgery. I'm not sure we were making the play-in BEFORE Wemby got shelved.

The direct answer is most likely not. A guy that size likely had a few genetic tests in his life and thorough questioning on previous medical issues.  The genetic testing testing, echocardiogram, imaging etc for the Draft would have been fairly extensive.  Without saying more, I hope it is a rare, single occurrence for him

***so long winded way of saying, there was not much more to do to screen him for this beyond the reading of his medical records and in house testing etc.

Suuuuucks.

I was wondering why tickets to the two Austin games were cheaper when I just checked.

Ok, so we tank, get another patented Spurs leap to #1 and return next year with Pop/Wemby/Fox/Castle/Flagg and win it all as Pop retires.

Easy peasy.

This fuckin sucks. But players have had blood clots and come back fine. Brandon Ingram and Ausar Thompson are two examples.

Hoping the best for Wemby. Maybe we get Flagg after all.

Don't know if it's true, but my 17 year old just told me that there is a rule in the lottery that you can't get the first pick if you've had it within the past 3 years.  Anyone know if this is true?

Upper Extremity DVTs rarely travel to the lungs. But if there is an underlying hypercoaguable systemic issue then you have to worry about clots forming elsewhere.

He most likely has a clot from repetitive strain of his thoracic outlet (vessles and nerves that pass from neck through the shoulder). He might need surgery in addition to anticoagulant.

I was talking openly about them starting the tank even before the injury. This just gives them clarity. This also gives Castle a much wider berth. He needs 35 minutes a night to learn from as many mistakes as possible.

Don’t get me wrong, it still sucks not to see Wemby play until next fall, but this is probably a blessing in disguise. Also, for the worry warts, Brandon Ingram had the same issue and he’s been fine. Ausar Thompson too, although it’s too early to say anything about his health long term.

Maybe. I'm not taking any health issues with this kid lightly.

You are right that we probably get a better result out of this season than we would have - but I'm not confident that this is good for Wemby or our future.

Wemby and Pop are gonna be recovering together. Would be a great sitcom.

"Pop Goes the Wemby" sounds like it's made for NBA TV. But it hints of serious medical issues, so nah.

Fox's post game interview impressed me, and he's been impressing me the whole time since he got here actually. He says, and I believe him when he said, the team is trying to get a W every night they play. In a stacked conference that might not be enough to make the play-in, but maybe it will be. As long as the Hawks are in the lottery I'm happy.
