It's the most relaxing week of college football viewership - a bye with an undefeated record. We start with a very Texas Thursday, hit a sneaky good night game on Friday, and then get a middling slate of Saturday action. I'll be catching the tailgate + first quarter of Yale's home opener before setting into a bar somewhere in New Haven.

A very weak night game roster is a good time to check in on some teams that are building decent outsider playoff hopes. Enjoy the games, and lets hope for some upsets.

Thursday games

Texas State @ Troy - 7/6 ESPN: It's football! GJ Kinne is a good coach. I don't really have anything else to add.

Sam Houston @ UTEP - 9/8 CBSSN: The Piney Woods meets the Sun Bowl.

Friday games

Houston @ TCU - 7:30/6:30 ESPN: Sonny Dykes is returning to his coaching level, but even he should be able to kick the shit out of the worst P4 team. Houston is bad, bad, bad.

Michigan State @ #6 Oregon - 9/8 Fox: Jonathan Smith should have Sparty back to contention soon, but this isn't the game it happens.

Syracuse @ #25(t) UNLV - 9/8 FS1: UNLV hasn't missed a beat with Campbell transfer Hajj-Malik Williams stepping in for Matthew Sluka. Syracuse should be a good test for the Runnin' Rebs at home. Yes I know that's technically only their basketball nickname, but it's fun.

Friday games

#9 Mizzou @ #25(t) Texas A&M -11/12 ABC: A&M hosts a top ten Mizzou squad that hasn't looked entirely convincing after they've spent the last four weeks beating a combination of the Little Sisters of the Poor (nearly losing to the Bowling Green branch) and SEC teams that are firing their coaches this season. Someone is going to find out they are definitely not making noise this year.

SMU @ #22 Louisville - 11/12 ESPN: SMU still doesn't seem to be getting the respect they deserve after a solid start to the season. Louisville might be reeling from a close loss to Notre Dame. Should be a fun game.

Pitt @ UNC - 11/12 ESPN2: Pitt is right on the verge of the top 25. Mack followed up the JMU 70-burger by blowing a three score lead to his biggest rival. Schadenfreude, ahoy.

Big Noon Saturday is another bad B1G game (UCLA @ #7 Penn State - 11/12 Fox), and this might be a good time to check in on the undefeated Midshipmen, who are looking very strong with an excellent win against Memphis already in the books (Navy @ Air Force - 11/12 CBS).

-

#12 Ole Miss @ South Carolina - 3:30 / 2:30 ESPN: The Rebels are reeling after walking right into the garden rake known as the Kentucky defense. It doesn't get easier against the evil South Carolina pass rush. But if Lane's boys can unfuck their offense, they can hang 40+ on anyone.

Iowa @ #3 Ohio State - 3:30 / 2:30 CBS: Ohio State finally gets sort of tested. Can Iowa pull a Kentucky and turn the game into a rock fight?

Rutgers @ Nebraska - 3:30 / 2:30 FS1: More interesting than an unranked Rutgers - Nebraska game sounds like on its face. Both teams are well-coached and will really want this one in the hunt for bowl eligibility.

#1 Alabama @ Vanderbilt - 4:15/3:15 SECN: Trap game ahoy! Can the feisty 'dores sink the Tide?

-

#15 Clemson @ Florida State - 7/6 ESPN: Will DJU's injury revive the Noles? Or do we get to point and laugh at them once again.

Baylor @ #16 Iowa State - 7:30/6:30 Fox: The Big 12 title game is looking increasingly like it'll be between 2 out of BYU, K-State, Utah, and Iowa State. Can Matt Campbell deal with high hopes?

Utah State @ #21 Boise State - 7/6 FS2: A great time slot to check out the Ashton Jeanty show.

UCF @ Florida - 7:45 / 6:45 SECN: UCF is pretty bad, but it's always funny when UF loses to a regional school, and they're in danger here.

Duke @ Georgia Tech - 8/7 ACCN: This feels like the game where Duke's undefeated record runs aground.

-

#8 Miami @ Cal - 10:30 / 9:30 ESPN: Gameday actually picked a fun matchup for their first-ever trip to Berkeley. The Golden Bears are rugged, if not particularly good at offense, and Memorial Stadium will be cold, foggy, and packed for the explosive but fragile 'Canes. #ACCAfterDark!

Texas Tech @ Arizona - 11 / 10 Fox: The Border Conference lives! A solid nightcap.

Pretty sure that 3rd group of games is on Saturday.

Ari Wasserman is a bloviating moron, who is also completely devoid of personality, and probably my least favorite national CFB voice. He read Bud Elliott's blue chip ratio and somehow managed to build an entire brand around the novel concept that the teams with all the best players usually win and then acts vindicated every year when Toledo doesn't win the national championship.

Vanderbilt is a potential trap game for us too.

Since we haven't played them in the lifetime of anyone here, (maybe Brat?) the novelty of going to Nashville will keep this one from being overlooked.

We are laying 16 fucking points against Oklahoma.

Vandy is going to get a hot branding iron shoved up their ass.

Kentucky is a trap game. Arkansas is a trap game.

Vandy is a sitting duck. A road apple.

Go Trojans!!

We are... Well... Frankly, we suck ever since our coach left us for fucking TULANE. It doesn't help that our best wide receiver is recovering from Osteosarcoma (get well soon Chris!) and our other best wide receiver is stuck in a useless offense at A&M. I guess there's always next year.

Although Vandy y Diego Pavia are fully capable of ruining our Cinderella Boy on the 18th Green at Augusta Tears in His Eyes I Guess Season, I will whistle past that graveyard if the channels allow because I always relish Alldumb vs UGA at Athens, particularly when (a) the Dawgs have that Stephen King Stand By Me “Chopper! Balls!” mindset as they no doubt will this weekend and (b) the Plainsmen are mired trying and failing to get out of their own way.  Kirby the Merciless rains molten terror on the Tiggers Sairdy!

Dude, show some class and don’t check the scores at your wife’s birthday dinner.

Save that for when she’s blowing you later.

Pretty shitty slate of games overall which is disappointing for a bye week.

I mean, objectively, yes.  But as an SMU Law grad and a guy whose wife is a UCF alumna, there's a lot for me to like.

The potential for Mrs.LL to lord yet another UCF victory over her UF friends when they come to town next month is just too delicious.

Ahh, nope. We're in the middle of our 'summer' in these parts, with a weather pattern we get for a few weeks usually in mid-Sept to early October. Currently excessive heat warnings all week. The high Sunday in Berkeley will be the low 90s, and even gametime will still be in the 80s. No onshore fog this week, at least as it stands now. The Cal players may drop from the heat, while the Miami players will be putting on their winter gear.

My trendlines from last week largely held up after Saturday's action

  • SEC still is the league to beat so to speak...Alabama, Georgia, Texas, and Tennessee are definitely legit contenders. Ole Miss failed its first test against a defense with a pulse and is relegated to non-playoff postseason for now. Their game with LSU next weekend is an elimination game for the loser in terms of playoff viability. Mizzou has a chance to enter the chat this week if they roll into Kroger field and beat the Ags, who I continue to believe will gump their way to 9 wins just like they gumped their way to a win last week. A&M is not a top 25 team, but still get the benefit of the doubt for some unknown reason. Of course, if Mizzou reverts to well, Mizzou, they'll be out of the playoff discussion as well as their only other chance to get an impressive win will be at Alabama in November, which I think there is a low probability of that.
  • The Big 10 is a distant second to the SEC right now and the league has been downright boring so far this year. Ohio State hasn't played anyone to date, Michigan got its ass handed to it by Texas, Oregon struggled early and something doesn't look quite right with that team, and Penn State still needs to prove they can beat Ohio State even though they got a solid win against Illinois last week. Not to mention the fact that their TV partners are not putting interesting matchups in key slots. Ohio State is probably the best team here and two of Oregon, Penn State, USC, Michigan or (gasp) Indiana will make the playoffs, but I'd short everyone but Ohio State on getting deep in the playoff.
  • ACC looks to be a two team and likely 2 bid league. If Miami can escape Cal this weekend, its schedule is pretty damn favorable the rest of the way. Yes, they escaped VaTech on a controversial call on a Hail Mary, but they do have the best player in the ACC in Cam Ward and the only other team that can match them in conference looks like Clempson and they won't see them until the title game. Speaking of those Tigers, they really have been drinking the Tiger Blood as they have had a complete reversal of fortune since losing to Georgia and also have a favorable schedule. If 12-0 Miami and 11-1 Clemson are in the ACC title game, both make the playoffs.
  • The Big 12 is on track to be a one bid league and they may severely test rule about top 4 conference champs get a bye as it is highly likely that a 3 loss Big 12 team makes the playoffs and gets a bye over a significantly better SEC (or maybe Big 10 team) who sits in the 5 seed spot. The conference lacks great QB's and dynamic playmakers (CU is the only team that has those, but doesn't have much of a team other than the playmakers) which will make every contest interesting (and probably draw decent ratings), but these teams are no match for the top of the SEC or the Big 10. Big 12 really needs Notre Dame to lose more (at least one before USC) to have a crack at two spots in the playoffs.

As for the largely disappointing slate of games:

Mizzou-A&M - Mizzou had a bye and has the better QB and skill position player and a solid defense. Despite what happened at home to Vandy, if Brady Cook, Luther Burden, and Eli Drinkwitz are who everyone thinks they are, they will leave College Station with a win

Ole Miss- Lesser USC - Which Cocks and which Rebels team shows up. SC has a solid defensive front and Ole Miss struggled early with Kentuckys defense. Still, not yet ready to hop off the Lane Train and they need to win before heading to Death Valley next Saturday night.

Miami - Cal - Was last week a fluke for Miami. Or are there problems that Cam Ward may not be able to overcome. Cal has the ignominious distinction of being FSU's only victim this season which means they can't be that good but Miami has generally not played well west of the Rockies and it is a looong trip. Miami should win but wouldn't be a complete shock to see the upset.

Navy - Air Force - Not normally a game I would care about but with USMA and USNA both 4-0 together for the first time since WWII, an all academy battle is worthy of mention. I saw Air Force play earlier this season and they are not at the level of previous Falcon teams. Navy with the win and looking forward to a potential entertaining game with Army late in the year. If Army or Navy finishes the year 11-1 and wins the AAC...are they the Group of 5 participant in the playoff? Potential smaller story but I am sure we will all be following...

Perfect weekend to bow out and celebrate my wife’s bday. Didn’t even plan it that way but there’s really no match up that’s must see football this weekend.

Why would you besmirch the football-adjacent product that is UTEP vs. SHSU like this?

Jason Kirk must not like cfb very much.

Aggy/Mizzou is a ranked matchup in the SEC. Whether aggy should be ranked or not - they are actually favored right now.

SMU/Louisville is a top 25ish matchup between 3 and 4 in the ACC that could have CCG and potentially CFP implications.

I'm guessing we get a few upset alerts across the board as well. Curious to see how UGA looks this week.

I feel like a lot of people are still treating this season as if only 1 and 2 or 1-4 have a shot at the end of the season. Twelve teams make the CFP - making a lot of less than relevant matchups this season more relevant.

Yeah, that one is a must watch so I don’t get it. A ranked on ranked match up is usually always a must watch
