There are a lot of potentially great movies coming out before the end of 2024 but here’s the one we’re the most excited about. Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and many others have teamed up with director Laurent Bouzereau to make a documentary about the best film composer ever, John Williams, and your first look is finally here.

The film is called Music by John Williams and it’ll be released on Disney+ November 1, along with a limited theatrical release in New York, Los Angeles, and London on the same day. The news came along with the release of the film’s first trailer, which you can watch below. But fair warning. Get ready to feel goosebumps at your desk or wherever you’re reading this.

Disney describes the film as follows: “From his early days as a jazz pianist to his 54 Oscar nominations and five wins, the documentary takes an in-depth look at Williams’ countless contributions to film, including many iconic franchises, as well as his music for the concert stage and his impact on popular culture. The film features interviews with artists and filmmakers whose lives have been touched by his timeless music.”

There are so many things that are exciting about all of this. Having a new movie entirely filled with Williams’ music is one. Seeing the people in the trailer, and surely many others, explain what Williams means to them is another. Hearing from his family about what impact his type of musical genius had on them is yet another. And who isn’t excited by some of the vintage footage in there? Hopefully, there’s much, much more.

The director, Laurent Bouzereau, is best known for his behind-the-scenes work on many of Steven Spielberg’s films. For example, he directed the recent Harrison Ford documentary you can still see on Disney+. What that means is the access is absolutely unprecedented, but also maybe things are a tiny bit sugar-coated. Which could be a knock in some cases but specifically in the case of Williams, I’m fine with it. It’s just exciting that we’ll have this love letter to him to enjoy from now until forever.

One other thing to mention is the footage of Williams on stage with fellow conductor Gustavo Dudamel—the scenes with all the lightsabers and Williams wearing white. That footage was taken at the Hollywood Bowl (we’re guessing in 2023) where Williams has been performing his music annually for decades. This year, however, the maestro wasn’t up to it physically so the performance happened without him. It was incredibly sad. Hopefully, he’s back in 2025 but, at the age of 92, there’s a chance the film may have captured his last time at the Bowl.

Welp. May as well admit now I'll either be covered in goosebumps or bawling on November 1st, probably both.

Talk about the soundtrack of my 80s childhood. Love John Williams and have dozens of his soundtracks and songs in my library.

Yep.  Took all of about 60 seconds to get dusty in here.

I used to play a CD of John Williams movie scores when my daughter was about 5 years old or so and would always play it in the car. She knew all the tunes to Star Wars, Superman, Raiders, E.T., etc. Even his score for the Olympics was on there.

Talk about soundtrack of our lives.

The GOAT. As both Spielberg and Lucas suggest in the trailer, Williams’ scores clearly leveled up their movies a significant amount. I always love the story, which I’m sure will be mentioned in the doc, where for the final chase and goodbye sequence in ET, Spielberg actually recut the footage to better fit Williams’ music, when normally it’s the other way around.

Saw him conduct at the Hollywood Bowl last summer. Noticed a bit of footage from those shows in the trailer.

His Kennedy Center Honors induction was incredible.  It really kicks in at the 13 minute mark when the US Marine Band (Williams was once in the Air Force Band) plays all the hits.

Also, he was on Smartless over the summer.  It was a little different than most of their interviews as Williams gets down into the nitty gritty, but still quite good.

I'm trying to think of a category like this where the GOAT is so objectively obvious. Like if Michael Jordan had averaged 80 ppg and won 20 titles.

Gretzky in the NHL.

5 oscar wins seems awfully low.

Isn't he the most nominated person in Oscars history

A true musical genius. The documentary was terrific going through his whole life. As a studio musician I was surprised to find out of his involvement of scores like West Side Story, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and To Kill a Mockingbird. Just to name a few. I’m a huge soundtrack fan and found this doc to be fascinating and at times moving (Schindler’s List). As Williams said the old way of making movie scores, like Max Steiner, John Barry and Williams has done, is dying. Very often because of budget and speed. Technology and digital has taken over. They will be missed but boy are we blessed to have had them.

I haven’t seen the doc yet, but absolutely will. The Home Alone story is great. Home Alone was made on a fairly small budget and after an early cut of the film, producers realized they might have a masterpiece, but needed real composition as the score they were using was a cheap, premade generic cut of Christmas music. They threw a Hail Mary and sent the cut to John Williams and he was so moved by the story he offered to score it for free. I’m sure he was compensated somehow, but the final result was beautiful and perfect.

Imagine Star Wars with a soundtrack done by ...

Alan Parsons.

I'm just going to fast forward to the part about his son being the lead singer of Toto.

Sure, by the time Toto had jumped the shark.

The heavy vocal lifting on all of Toto's best tracks came courtesy of Bobby Kimball.

i really enjoyed the doc, and got a little dusty several times.

the only part I thought was weird was they only interviewed his daughter.  I believe both the sons are still alive, and them not being interviewed seems like a major hole in the story.

One of my favorite films and soundtracks that usually doesn't get mentioned is Hook (although the end theme was used in the credits for this).  This is one of my favorite scenes that the music just makes the scene.
