24/25 Astros Offseason thread

Before Kyle Tucker was traded from the Astros to the Cubs, the Yankees were known to be one of the teams also vying to land the star outfielder.  Reigning AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil was reportedly of interest to the Astros in these trade talks, but New York ultimately turned down Houston’s demand for Gil and infield prospect George Lombard Jr. in exchange for Tucker, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

It makes for an interesting contrast to the trade package that the Astros did accept from Chicago.  Lombard and prospect Cam Smith could be viewed as essentially a match as recent first-round draft picks, though Smith is higher regarded in the view of MLB Pipeline (Smith is 73rd on their top-100 prospect list and Lombard isn’t on the list).  Gil is a controllable pitcher who has already made a name for himself at the big league level, so Isaac Paredes and Hayden Wesneski represent something of a split of those two resume points.  Wesneski is controlled through 2029 and has a solid 3.93 ERA over his 190 Major League innings, but he isn’t considered to have quite Gil’s ceiling, so making up that difference could’ve been achieved by adding a proven hitter like Paredes.

Wesneski has a lot to work with, the potential is there

sucks to lose tucker but we’re not deep enough to keep him and let him go for one draft pick

Yordan is not the type of player who spends his entire career with one team.  DHs tend to bounce around a lot towards the end of their careers.

Unfortunately he's probably not going to have a long career because of his knees.

These two factors will limit his market enough that we might keep him

Am I wrong to think that the longer this goes the more likely it is that Bregman signs in Houston?

yes. don't read anything into the timing.

all the people involved from the players, agents, and team front office personnel are dealing with holiday bullshit and are effectively on break until the new year.

Lol this ain't high school where everyone gets 3 weeks off. This is a multimillion dollar business.

Shit is still happening just like shit happened last year from Dec14-Jan1.

I don't think Bregman wants to leave, but I don't think there is anything he can do to stop it unless he just wants to give up probably 30M

Last year a few of Boras' clients waited a long time for big money, it never came, teams moved on, and those guys had to take relatively short term deals instead to "prove it" again. Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery were the two big ones that didn't get what they wanted. Snell got big money from the Dodgers this year after having a good second half of the season, while Jordan may never see a contract anywhere near what he was offered last off-season. Bellinger also did a short deal with opt outs, while he was projected to get a 150-200m+ deal and got 3/80 instead.

It's a gamble for Bregman to wait, but maybe he signs a 1 year deal with players options to run it back one more time. I hope he stays, Paredes moves to 1st and they go find a couple OFs to fill out the rest of the roster.

Bregman got his greedy hands on a big money deal.

Can Dana Brown and Crane not figure out contracts in the modern era of baseball. Ok F Bregman who cares, but what about all the talent that was there the last three years. We got bamboozled into that Abreu deal. Fans suffer for ignorant management moves.  Rant over

He’s just a paid athlete. Nothing more. I don’t get all the sentimentality. He got paid to do a job. He did it well like he was paid to do. Like any paid employee. Now he’s on to the next job. See ya kid. We’ll be fine. Name on the front is still the same. I guess I’ve just never been a “fan” of anyone except maybe Roger Staubach. They all come and go.
