start pumping banana puddings into chas, asap !!!!
Dana Brown says Astros OF Chas McCormick is swinging the bat really well.
“We feel like our outfield is strong right now.”
“We’re not committed to Altuve in left field.”
Dana in midseason spouting bullshit form already. He doesn't need a Spring Training

He will need a 3 year 36 million dollar deal to match the Astros offer if he doesn’t opt out. Hard to imagine he couldn’t get that unless he turns into Jose Abreu

assuming he doesn't opt out in any of those years, he will hit free agency again at 34. I don't see him commanding a multi-year 36 million or more contract at that age unless he cranks up his performance significantly.

I’m happy that I will never have to watch Bregman struggle every April and May again.

I'm happy that I won't have to read the Surly meltdown of how bad the Manager is because Bregman can't hit in April...

Of course, he'll hit in April in Boston and Surly will melt down about how bad the Manager is because Bregman is now hitting in April.

3/$90 (per Olney) means that at 34, he needs to beat 3/$70 at least.  We'll see.

not happening at 34. Very few 3b command that kind of contract at that age. His best bet is having a monster season this year and opting out for a Matt Chapman-like deal that pays him 5 or 6 years at an AAV of 25 million per year.

Where's 3/$90 coming from?  That much deferred money?

Yep... he should have at least 3 more decent earning years after this contract and will easily surpass what the Astros were offering.  He'll probably end up making 15-20M more than what the Astros put on the table.

recent history disagrees with you. very few 33/34 yo non-pitchers get 50+ mm dollar deals in free agency. (as I wave at Christian Walker..)

https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/contracts/_/position/b/sort/signed_age/dir/desc

In the end he probably did us a favor though as it looks like our offer was a massive overpay.

He doesn't need a $50M deal.  He needs a series of short term deals that avg out to 15-20M AAV.  No one wants to give 34 yo Alex Bregman 50M, but maybe they'll give him 22M for a year.  And then the next team gives him 18M for a year.  And then he gets $12M.

he's not getting those deals at that age though. He might get one 12-15 mm deal but no way is he getting the numbers you're throwing out here. Go look at that list.

With Crane's fetish for avoiding the good half of long term deals and signing guys in their mid-30s, maybe there will be a reunion.

Bargaining stage of grief.

The cheating scandal didn't hurt, but Springer was super pissed at the organization for playing with his service time. There really was no reason to keep Springer in the minors in 2013 or 2014, he was ready for a fulltime roll after his 2012 MiLB season.

springer wasn't worth that next contract

he's been a bad deal for toronto

He had a 6/$156 (probably upped to $160, whatever) present day offer from the Astros (I don't think any of it was deferred)

He took 3/$90 present day from the Red Sox

That means that he is behind if he gets 22/18/12 for years 4-5-6

You are mixing up different value calculations in your comparison.  You use the contract value for the Astros offer and present value for the Boston contract.  Gotta pick one and stick with it for comparison.

"Bregman had offers of 6 years/$171.5 million (opt-out after 2026) from Detroit, and 4 years/$120 million (opt-outs after 2026 & 2027) from the Cubs, per sources," Feinsand said. "The higher AAV combined with the opt-outs after each of the next two years were the key to him taking the Boston deal."

It also was reported heavily that the Astros offered Bregman a six-year deal worth $156 million.

https://www.si.com/mlb/red-sox/boston-red-sox-news/alex-bregman-contract-details-red-sox-star-declined-3-other-offers-pat3

So the Tigers did offer a bit more with 1 one more year, but with unspecified deferments. Cubs offer was reasonable, and probably better than the Astros overall. The notion that his market was cold or underwhelming appears to be wrong. He wasn't getting 200m like he had hoped, but this is still really good money for him at 30m+ per year.

I can't really blame him for leaving, but will miss him. Fare well Bregman.

Even making the $156 Astros offer present value, he's still going to be behind.  That 22/18/12 hypothetical in 4-5-6 would also have to be switched to present value.

Don't get focused on the $30M present value number for Bregman.  He's still getting $40M AAV on this deal.  The accounting trick is when those payments come.

It seems like a very steep discount, though...

Is he getting $1M for 120 years?

The discount is relevant to Bregman. He still has to wait to collect the deferred money. $40 million in 10 years isn’t the same as $40 million today.

They don't even need the 2023 version. 21-22 would suffice (which should be a reason for more optimism, last year was much more of an outlier for him than 23 was).

all we need is chas to pump out AVG MLB LF numbers. we don't need him to be a hero, just consistent

also, extend him now and get a huge discount !!!

he ain’t making much more money than if he’d have done the Astros deal. Maybe less.

Yeah, because we kept him in the minors for two extra years. He had 8.6 WAR, including the 2020 season, which would have been part of his free agent years, His best season of his career would have been his 1st season as a FA, and that was with him missing 40 games.

What does $40M a year in Massachusetts convert to in Texas after state income tax?

My recollection from the past is that state income tax is about 5%; depends on which state you play each game in.

But presumably, he is deferring money and will be in a non-income tax state when he collects

Why does it need to end?

hmmmm .....

There are only five players in MLB that make at least $40m AAV going into 2025:

Shohei Ohtani
Juan Soto
Zack Wheeler
Aaron Judge
Alex Bregman

i would expect a top 5 salaried player make the all star game yearly
