Holy shit, Devers press conference today was 🔥.

Reporter 1 - "If they asked you to DH, you wouldn't do it."

Devers - "No."

Reporter 2 - "Can you expound on that?"

Devers - "I play third."

Yeah, this is going to be a disaster.

just beat up the yankees and orioles, then finish .500 again

The contrast between Devers and Altuve is obvious.

(Altuve's the bad guy, though.)

What if I like em both? Devers is a likeable player on their squad, IMHO.

Why shouldn't Breggy change positions?

Bregman has been a significantly better third baseman than Devers, according to Fangraphs' advanced fielding statistics. In the "defensive runs saved" metric, a measure of how many opponent's runs above (or below) average a fielder prevented, Bregman over nine years has saved 27 runs.

But in his eight-year career, Devers has a negative number in that category of -62. using baseball's statistical "rule of thumb," holding that every 10 runs equals one win, the 89-run difference means that Bregman's teams have won nearly nine more games than Devers' teams over their careers, simply due to the difference in the two players' third base fielding performance.

We're beating the Dodgers in the World Series this year.  I think it's at least 65% likely.

We're not nearly as good as we used to be. We're OK and maybe can win the division, but even if we do a quick exit from the post season seems likely.

I hope we overachieve.

Nah, the playoffs are always a crapshoot.  Get in and you have a chance.  I just don't think we're favorites to get in this year for the first time since 2016 probably.

90-92 wins with neutral luck. 100 of things break right with health and a couple rookies. 84 or so if we end up snakebit with injuries again.

Astros vs Dodgers in the World Series would be pretty funny. Which side would the rest of the MLB take? Would it be like KC/Philly in the Super Bowl, where most fans chose 'meteor strike'?

Quote

Altuve avoided putting a number on playing any games in left field, saying it depends “on what they request.” Asked if he had a preference for where he plays, Altuve said he does not.

“I want to play. I want to be in the lineup. I want to help this team win, keep hitting doubles and triples and homers for this team,” Altuve said. “It doesn’t really matter where I play. I’m going to try to do my best.”

Selflessness is a hallmark of Altuve’s career, but still so rare for someone of his stature. Third baseman Rafael Devers’ comments about not wanting to DH full-time after Bregman’s arrival with Boston only accentuate things. That Altuve even accepted the club’s choice to explore another position for him is a luxury few other clubs could ever count on from a Cooperstown-bound player.

“His willingness to do what the team needs is most important,” said first baseman Christian Walker, a teammate of Altuve’s for all of one day. “I think that’s honorable.”

...

Little about Altuve’s future in left field will be known until later in spring training. Houston hasn’t even held its first full-squad workout, which is scheduled for Tuesday, and Altuve doesn’t even own an outfield glove. Yordan Alvarez loaned Altuve his for Monday’s workout. Afterward, Altuve jokingly blamed it for the one fly ball he dropped.

I was walking around Disneyland this weekend, seeing all these Dodger hats and shirts, and I'm just thinking, "Fuck these guys."

If they sniff 100 wins Joe Espada should win manager of the year.

Hayden Wesneski doesn’t do it for you?!

(also, who tf is Hayden Wesneski?)

and Chad, Dubon and Meyers as every day players (with Altuve in left). Woof

AL West will be that division where the division winner is fighting to stay above .500 all year.

Tucker could be replaced by a cardboard cutout and no one would notice.

I think the cardboard cutout of Tucker is who appears in the postseason. 64 Postseason games in 6 seasons (15 series): 247 PA, .229/.309/.376/.685. His regular season/postseason splits are Bagwellian.

Moving Altuve to LF is paving the way for Matthews to come up if he gets off to a hot start in AAA. I actually don't mind that lineup too much considering Dubon is an elite defensive 2B, and you replace move McCormick to CF and Gamel in RF. Meyers is at best a 5th OF, asking him to play everyday again is retarded. Hopefully Melton, gets off to a hot start as well.

I mean it is no different than last seasons World Series

Because Altuve is not good as a defensive 2B.

I love Altuve and not trying to throw shade, but the narrative was he said he would move to OF for Bregman....I mean that's a heart warming story blah blah blah, but not sure exactly how true it is.

Pretty sure the real narrative that I have heard is they came to him and told him he needs to work on OF because he needs to be in a different spot defensively.

Plus, as mentioned with Matthews, by moving him if Brice shows a heartbeat they can bring him up to play 2nd.  Or if somehow Cam goes nuts they could bring him up to play 3rd (I know he will be getting work in OF also) and move Paredes to 2nd.

Altuve should be in OF, but man this is gonna bring the lulz nightly

Why isn't Dubon playing LF?

Because Altuve's best position moving forward is DH, but we have the best DH in baseball already. Altuve's range and arm make him almost unplayable at 2B, you can mitigate that somewhat by moving him to LF, especially in Daikin Park.

same. I'm still excited for new beginnings and the new season, but even my homer-vision is cloudy for 2025. I don't see this lineup going very far and it's more likely this is an 82-win team or less that misses the postseason than a 90+ win team that challenges for the AL title.

I hope that everyone who ever mentioned/suggested/advocated trading away starting pitching last year or the year before spends some time marinating with this graphic.

To paraphrase the great baseball mind of General George S. Patton:

"No bastard ever won a pennant by trading away his starting pitching. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard trade away his starting pitching."

I will bet you on this. I get $10 for every win over 90. You get $10 for every win under 85.

I agree, even though he's 2024 draftee, he should fly through the minors. They should try hard to get Paredes signed long term, so that way Williams can concetrate on RF. There is now great incetive to bring him up if he's ready early, because he wins ROY, you get draft pick compensation. We need to replace picks we lost to the "cheating" and horrible FA decisions.

I think its critical Yordan stays healthy this season. If he's out of the lineup we get real weak real quick.

I like him at DH way the hell better than chasing fly balls into the wall along the left field line or better yet, the fucking scoreboard in LF.  Altuve can probably jump through the slot where the numbers hang...
