Altuve in LF is sad.

Maybe sad in the sense that our time with the Greatest Astro is closer to the end than the beginning.  However, it's the better thing for the team's defense, and it shows why he is so amazing and lovable.  For me, it elevates him even further, from god status to whatever is beyond that.  I'll never bet against him, and they better list his true height and not that 5'6 bullshit on his plaque in Cooperstown.

I think they had successfully hidden the loss of range behind their shift strategy, and the rules change away from that made it more of an acute problem.

This would be awesome. Anything other than the brick red would be awesome.

I agree, but the brick red hats for 2025 are already on the internet for purchase. Hopefully it's just a one-off product offering for people who are nostalgic of the Carlos "El Taco Caballo" Lee era.

He was never a good defensive 2B, it was just the best position on the field for him because he had a weak arm. He has had two seasons where his DRS was positive. The last 3 years; -15, -13, -13. For his career he has a -82 DRS.

He was good defensively for the shift because Correa covered so much.   Minus the yips in 2020 playoffs.

We won 88 games last year and I saw where Christian Walker saves like 62 runs per year defensively so that should realistically put us at 115-118 wins.

He won a Gold Glove some way, but it was a decade ago.

Joe Espada tells Todd Kalas on @AstrosRadioMLB that he expects Lance McCullers and Luis Garcia to return from the IL “pretty early in the season.”

He says late April is in play for McCullers.

Cubs DFA Alexander Canario when they signed Justin Turner.  Astros should get him.  He did well in the minors, and barely had any ABs in the majors so far.  Most importantly he is an OFer who is 24 yrs old so just get him and see what the hell happens

There is no way he is worse than Taylor Trammell

Keither Motherfuckin' Law ranked Trammell as the #14 prospect overall in 2019.  And he played for both WS teams last year, so everything he touches turns to gold.

Well he said the Astros gave Jose Abreu too much money and too many years so he obviously just hates us.

Brendan Rodgers was surprised to be non-tendered by the Rockies, but when he saw Jose Altuve was moving to left field, he called his agent, Scott Boras, to see if he could get in the 2B mix in Houston. He drove down from his Florida home this morning.

Wouldn’t a good agent be calling the player to see if he was interested in getting in the mix?

Is the infield going to be?

Paredes/ Pena / Rogers / Walker. Not bad if so.

Tuve/ Myers / Chas sure looks a lot better as a lineup with Tuve out there.

Probably more likely a platoon in CF and RF between Meyers, McCormick, Gamel, and Trammel.

Brendan Rodgers' minor-league deal with the Astros contains three opt out dates: one at the end of spring training, one on May 1 and another on June 1, sources tell @TheAthletic.

The Astros were one of Arenado's five preferred destinations, but he couldn't pull the trigger.  He sounds like an idiot.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6150459/2025/02/21/cardinals-nolan-arenado-trade-astros-awkward/?source=emp_shared_article

  Quote

To help Mozeliak’s search, Arenado presented him with a list of five teams that he would consider waiving his no-trade clause for. According to multiple league sources, that list named the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and Houston Astros as possible destinations. Arenado also said he would be willing to move to first base, or at least play third base less frequently if it would lead to a trade.

...

The Cardinals and Astros had agreed on the framework of a deal, one in which Houston would pay most of Arenado’s remaining salary. Per multiple sources familiar with the proposed deal, the Cardinals would pay roughly $15 million of Arenado’s salary — around 25 percent of their remaining commitment — over the next three years, well satisfying ownership’s desire to decrease payroll.

The Astros felt the need to make some financial concessions due to concerns over both payroll and the longevity of their farm system, but wanted to remain a postseason club. Houston was eager to bring in the eight-time All-Star, especially in the wake of trading Tucker and probably losing Bregman.

From Houston’s perspective, Arenado was the ideal answer. Still an elite defensive third baseman, Arenado would theoretically replace Bregman for a much cheaper cost, who was due for a monumental raise in his first year of free agency. There was minimal concern over Arenado’s offensive decline, with the belief that his pull-power swing would match up ideally with the hitter-friendly dimensions of Daikin Park.

Both the Cardinals and the Astros felt the trade would satisfy some of their most pressing needs, and both were pushing to complete it as soon as possible. All that remained was Arenado agreeing to it, something Mozeliak did not envision being an issue.

That’s when Arenado began having second thoughts about whether the Astros were a fit.

Mozeliak gave him the weekend to decide. By Monday, Arenado was still not sold. He did not want to rule out the Astros for good — something he communicated to both St. Louis and Houston — but he wanted more time to see how his market would play out and just how much Bregman’s free agency was impacting it. He also did not want his family (Arenado has a 2-year-old daughter, Levi, with his wife, Laura) to have to adjust to another organization unless he was entirely sure of his decision.

Both Mozeliak and Houston general manager Dana Brown were growing antsy, but the Astros still believed Arenado would accept the trade. However, the following day, Arenado officially informed Mozeliak he would not waive his full no-trade clause to join Houston — at least not at the current time. He would be open to conversations later in the offseason when more certainty about the Astros’ roster and his own market had been established. But Arenado also understood that Houston could pivot, which would essentially end chances of further negotiations later in the winter.

That’s exactly what the Astros did. By the end of the week, Houston had signed free agent Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million deal — slightly over what it had committed to Arenado. An angered Mozeliak was forced to go back to the drawing board, and would later lament the timing of the Tucker trade.

“I was a little surprised,” Mozeliak said in January when asked about Arenado’s block of the Astros trade. “Looking back at that, when Tucker was traded it was almost like order of operations. Had we been ahead of that?”

I have drafted Arenado in fantasy baseball many times, so, I'm dumb. Literally hate that guy.

On Stros, i've tried to reserve judgment to this point because you never know how off-season moves Will end up forming the outlook for the spring. But I have to say that I do like what I see at the moment. This round of excellence has been built on pitching carrying the way, and I think we can keep doing that. whether or not the lineup comes together behind them is going to be interesting to watch as the season develops. I do expect us to win the division.

Arenado is going to happen. “At the ten yard line” for the second time in an offseason. We may be adding a year to the contract which is an absolute mistake but I get it. I worry about his back but I don’t think he’s as toast as most think. Best defensive infield in baseball
