The Dallas Stars 2024-2025 Season Thread: Win Now, Talk Later

Recommended Posts

better, but we should be mopping the ice with teams like that. I know we always play STL close, but this ain't the same team of past. anyway, glad for dub. Bichsel and Hellberg sent back down. If they call Bichsel back up tomorrow then Dumba might be more hurt than we knew. Pretty sure DeSmith was just illness. Anyway, wondering what Nill is doing. Fowler to the Blues just seems like a waste. Guess he didn't want to win a cup anytime soon

Dumba sucks. Stupid signing but we can’t undo it. Roll with the kid.

I'm wondering how much the owner leaned into Nill to get him. Maybe it was Nill's idea, but it's time to cut bait.

Now I gotta go look at the fucking contract.

Edit: another year at nearly 4m

Back to back games I've attended where Jake lets in a flurry of 2nd period goals and fucks the game.   He needs to start earning that contract.  Also, back to back games I've attended where Robo seemingly didn't do much but take up space.   Heard it confirmed by a 2nd person last night that he's a douchebag/asshole in person so maybe even a bit more critical of his frequent failure to show up.

This team regressed a lot from last year. Nill has to get off his ass and make some moves. We cannot squander our window, which has been over for a few season now.

Robo is still rehabbing a repaired foot. It's not unlike a bunch of the seasons where Jamie or Seggy would play lights out, get hurt, and then struggle to get back up to speed the next season. I'm betting this is where Robo is. Also, let's leave the grade school coolness talk for another topic. Robo seems shy and soft spoken and probably doesn't like to be bothered by old fans pestering him about why he isn't scoring more. Maybe that comes off assholish, but he's no Sean Avery or even a Corey Perry.

What kind of pieces are you expecting Dallas to go after between now and the deadline? Maybe bottom six scorers?

I believe that continuing like we have will end in disappointment, so if i have any expectation it is that we make some kind of move - anything to shake up this lineup a bit.

The first move is to put Seguin on LTIR to free up damn near $10M in cap space. I'm honestly not sure why Nill hasn't done that already, but I'll assume he has a good reason. From there I would look at getting a top 6 forward and perhaps a middle pairing D man.  There have been rumblings of Zibanejad moving. Giroux too. Either would be a massive upgrade to our forward corps. If you peruse the list of 2025 UFAs there are several names that jump out at me as possible targets: Brock Boeser, Brock Nelson, Brad Marchand (please, no), Gustav Nyquist (although I doubt we'd deal inter-divisionally), Frank Vatrano (great player, would thrive in Dallas' system), or Kyle Palmieri - any of those guys would be be a great addition and would add a ton of depth to our forwards. On the D side it gets a little trickier, but from that same list Marcuss Pettersson's names jumps up. Other than that, it would be a trade of some kind that would be sorta hard to predict from here.

I didn't like our offseason moves and I immediately saw us a a downgraded team from the previous season. Exit Ty Dellandrea, Joe Pavelski, Radek Faksa, Jani Hakanpaa, Craig Smith, Ryan Suter, Joel Hanley and possibly others I am forgetting at the moment. In we bring Colin Blackwell, Brendan Smith, Matt Dumba, and Ilya Lyubushkin. Only that last one has exceeded my expectations. Blackwell is serviceable and Smith is ok, but Blackwell is nowhere close to replacing Pavelski's production or Faksa's puck hounding. Smith lacks a defining skill that sets him apart from any bottom 6 d-man other than being large.

Dumba has not fit in at all and this is no surprise to any Stars fan. Again, he's ok, but he was not an upgrade to anyone we lost on the back end last season. I'd dare say if I were a GM in a pickup game I'd grab Hanley over Dumba.

So by virtue of the fact that we have some players whose cup window is closing, we have about $10M to spend, and we are treading water at best in the standings, it seems pretty clear to me that we need to shake some things up. Sure, the flu going around the room isn't helping on an individual game basis, it's the underlying weaknesses that are evident and need to be addressed. Either that or it's time to admit we missed our window and start preparing for a few years of pain. That's Boston. That's not us, yet, but may be us soon enough. I think this team still has the core components to win it all - we just need some better supporting cast members.

Zibanejad would be a horrible move. He’s basically a copy of Robertson, too soft for playoff hockey and he usually disappears with the exception of the PP. Throwing out Marchand and Boeser is hilarious, those two aren’t going anywhere.

Palmieri I could see but would he really be a top six in Dallas? If you’re looking for a center, I’d probably switch out Brock Nelson for Yanni Gourde. Nelson struggles 5x5 and he isn’t much better on the PP. Gourde is a tough fucker that plays a physical game and you can slot him in any middle six role.

I threw out Mika because right now our issue is not shot generation, but shot conversion. We lost our sniper in Seguin and Zibanejad would be a close replacement. We can worry about his disappearing in the playoffs if we get there. I know Marchand moving is about as likely as Benn doing the same, but the chances aren't zero. Still, he would not be my first choice. Gourde is an interesting option but he wasn't on my radar as I wasn't aware he was considered a trade piece. Figured Seattle would want to hold onto him. Anyway, I doubt you or I will solve this problem. Whatever happens I'm betting we won't have predicted it. We shall see!

I don't really deep dive into hockey until post football season but did hear chatter last night about it being a bad year to have all this cap space at the trade deadline.  Just not expected to be as deep of a market as in typical years.  I have no doubt Nil is working on something though.   He knows team as currently constructed looks like a 1 and done team with actual risk of missing playoffs all together if some of the current players don't step up.

Eh, for me it's 1A) Dallas Stars 1B) Texas Longhorns football 2) NHL 3) everything else. I used to be a diehard Cowboys fan but Jerry finally chased me away. The NBA and MLB bore me to tears and unless it's The World Cup, soccer comes pretty close. I get up every season for hockey and especially so if the Stars are any good. I still watch if they're not.

I'm a solid 1 with Texas football with a decent gap then 2A Stars, 2B Texas basketball, 2C Mavs, 2D Rangers then another huge gap for anything else.   I don't give a shit about the Cowboys and haven't for a long time.  Agreed Jerry ruined them for me as well years ago.
