Would most certainly have to be a sign and trade for any team to get Rantanen. Why would a team copy the same mistake Carolina made? Would require a large haul to get him. I personally don’t think Rantanen is worth it. He’s a big guy that can score but I see him get knocked on his ass nearly every shift and he’s brutal defensively. Paying over $12MM for a winger right now is madness imo.

Is he that bad defensively? He's at 4.4 defensive player shares for the 2024-25 season according to Hockey-Reference, a full point higher than our highest-rated forward (Wyatt Johnston at 3.4). I still don't think I want to make the move as I really like what we have currently and would not want to fuck things up.

Any time I watch him he’s always a step late and out of position. Never getting sticks in passing lanes. Forechecking is fine but nothing special. I’m not sure what that stat is that you’re referencing but I wouldn’t want to cut a $12MM+ check to a guy that basically plays one end of the ice. That’s basically center money and he’s certainly not that.

Anyone got an NFL/NBA comp for Rantanen? How big of a get would this be?

The NBA is fucking ass so no help there. I’d say an NFL comp would be Tyreek Hill. He’s talented but it’s pretty clear his game was elevated playing on the same line as MacKinnon. I could probably score 20+ a year snapping it around with Nate and I fucking sucked at hockey growing up.

If management felt like Heiskanen were likely to return to game speed by playoffs, I'd be a lot more amenable to trading away a Maverick Borque type player for Rantanen. While there's every reason to believe Borque has an incredible future in front of him, Rantanen has a tremendous present, and should pair nicely with the current Stars style.

It hurts to say it, but Seguin is closing out a really nice career where he just never managed to be "that guy".

I want defense, but with the NHL estimating larger and larger salary caps, everyone's eyes are too big currently. There's just no one on the market that looks like last year's Chris Tanev level upgrade. Granted, that's a historical rarity, but the point remains. I don't want to acquire D-men just to be doing it.

The roster is currently better than the sum of its parts. Be intentional about messing with it.

He and benn both kind of aged out of superstar scorer and into gritty leader roles at the same general time, which put a ceiling on some seasons and they occupy a decent amount of cap space.

Must have realized he isn’t making Draisaitl money so he needed to pull the trigger while his value is still high.

i think someone finally got it through to him that he can either win or get paid $14m but not both.  apparently the lack of income tax in texas is worth about $500k compared to colorado

Seems like it should be more than that, unless Colorado has an upper limit to gross income tax.

Flat 4.4% on income. That’s barely a tax coming from Massachusetts

stankoven and two first round picks.  what a disaster rantanen was for carolina

That’s honestly incredible if that’s true. The two firsts aren’t that valuable as they would likely be late round picks. Did Carolina get absolutely bent over on trades this season, or what?

bad risk management imo.  necas's contract is up next year and rumor is that he didn't want to re-sign with carolina.  colorado wouldn't let carolina talk to rantanen about an extention before trading him

i'm with you on the first round picks.  guys picked at the end the first have a 50/50 shot at 100 NHL games.  as of today they traded necas for an undersized guy with good potential and maybe two guys who will combine for 200 NHL games

buzz is there is likely another move that happened late and could be announced in the next hour or so. there is a reason the team has not officially announced the trades yet

the more I think about it the Miro to LTIR smokescreen was to leave options open but to pump fake the league on Miro's condition. also, Nill is such an awesome and magnanimous GM he wanted to save his GM a cool $8.5M. Good guy, that Jim Nill. Hope Rantanen is in the lineup tomorrow. I'm fucking stoked!

Isn't the LTIR move just so that he won't count against the salary cap for the playoffs?  It's the same loophole that Vegas used last year for Matt Stone, right?

That's been my understanding of it, at least.  And if that's the case, Miro may be able to come back today for all any of us know.

my simple understanding of how the nhl calculates salary is that it is your active roster that matters. so even if a player is hurt, if he's not on LTIR, he still counts against the cap. since I think this is retroactive to Miro's injury, it's the total of all the games he would have played that is the free money. not sure I explained that right, anyway, afaik, for the playoffs you have to be under the cap entering the playoffs but once they start there basically is no cap. if you have a guy on your roster that was hurt and now he isn't, he can play. it'll eventually be called The Mark Stone Loophole
