Utah Hockey Club said it still expects to announce a permanent name and identity before the 2025-26 NHL season despite having "Utah Yetis" refused by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

"Since acquiring Utah's NHL team, we have been carefully evaluating possibilities for the permanent identity of the team, while working within the complicated world of trademarks and intellectual property," president of hockey operations Chris Armstrong said in a statement Thursday.

As first reported by Ryan Miller of KSL.com in Utah, the USPTO rejected a trademark application from the team for "Utah Yetis" because of the "likelihood of confusion" for consumers to other companies and brands that use the name.

In a memo dated Jan. 9, the USPTO wrote that the word "Utah" is generic descriptor that "renders the wording 'YETIS' as the more dominant element of the mark."

The patent office said that "Utah Yeti" also wouldn't be accepted because "the singular or plural form of a registered mark is essentially identical in sound, appearance, meaning, and commercial impression, and thus the marks are confusingly similar."

Utah Hockey Club was seeking to use "Utah Yetis" on a variety of clothing items. The USPTO said a database search turned up "a number of third-party marks registered for use in connection with the same or similar goods and/or services as those of both applicant and registrant in this case."

Among those parties was Yeti Coolers LLC, which makes drinkware, coolers and clothing. The memo was a "nonfinal office action." Utah Hockey Club has three months to respond.

I’m still voting for Mammoth.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston, the Avalanche will be receiving forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury from Carolina, along with a second- and fourth-round draft pick as part of the blockbuster deal that also involves the Chicago Blackhawks.

Rantanen, who is slated to be an unrestricted free agent this coming summer, has 25 goals and 64 points in 49 games with the Avalanche this year. The 28-year-old forward has gone over 100 points each of the last two campaigns.

The addition of the veteran bolsters an already-strong forward group for the Hurricanes, who rank second in the Metropolitan Division at 30-16-3 through 49 games. Carolina ranks fifth in the NHL with 165 goals scored entering play on Friday.

LeBrun also reported that Blackhawks forward Taylor Hall is involved in the trade, with multiple reports indicating the veteran is also going to the Hurricanes.

Wow, dude really wants a max deal over playing with a generational team with MacKinnon and Makar. Interesting to see if Carolina will be able to resign him.

should, we have Orlov coming off the books this summer and are replacing him with Nikishin. With the cap going up we should be able to meet his contract demands. Also will be curious to see if he's still demanding as much to play with his pal Aho.

He’s demanding $14MM per league sources. Don’t think Aho changes that.

probably not, though they'll probably try to talk him down to 13 if possible. Canes have 30M projected to be open next season if the projections for next season are correct though without a ton needing to be signed/acquired if they retain Rants. Goalie, an RHD to replace Burns (who's been shit this year), and a couple 3rd-4th line holes. Easily doable with the 16M that would be left over.
