Am I supposed to give a shit that Toronto has won a World Series and an nba championship, because of geography or recency of their team?

Because I don’t.  And I don’t understand why they would care that their sport has been steadily growing in the United States and as a result has many newish teams in previously unlikely places, and those teams are sometimes good enough to win the cup?

their teams are competing within the same financial architecture, why can’t they win some cups?

Leafs fans are some of the biggest pussies around. Much like Knicks fans, they think the sport of hockey revolves around the Leafs even though they haven’t won shit since the ‘60s. Shit players and teams are somehow magically transformed into elite teams when they throw on the maple leaf sweater. Their level of delusion rivals aggy.

Agree with Vertuzi, this fucking sucks. Not burn your collection bad, but damn.

At least we have the Celtics.

I remember Dallas in the 1980's when they were playing youth hockey at Prestonwood shopping mall. Hockey was a novelty to Texans in the 70's and 80's. I remember going to a Flyers/Oilers game at Reunion on September 30, 1987......the greatest team ever assembled with Gretzky, Messier, Fuhr, Kurri, Anderson, etc - and they were having to explain the rules of the game to the folks that showed up.

You fucking Stars and Avs fans better appreciate your GMs for what they do to keep your teams in the hunt. You could be stuck with a knuckle-dragging chimp like Don Sweeney who should have been ran out of Boston last year. He’s completely fucked this franchise and I’m concerned he’s going to fuck the future of this franchise because he can’t draft worth an ever-loving fuck. Guy has done nothing but piss off our best players with his stupid antics. I feel terrible for Pastrnak, McAvoy, and Swayman. Those three are probably asking “What the fuck has happened to this team?”

Yeah, Sakic has been amazing for the Avs, both as a player and now a GM/President.  I know he's not the GM anymore, but I also know nothing is happening without his blessing. And he and MacFarland are not afraid to make bold moves if they feel it is necessary.

Beninati is very good.  He describes a balanced account of the game.  He’s also a walking hockey encyclopedia.

Laughlin, the Caps lifer, is an insufferable homer who never finds anything wrong with the good guys.  Sometimes I just have to roll my eyes.  But, I truly hope he’s recovered sufficiently from recent open heart surgery to be present on the call to celebrate THE milestone with the rest of Caps diehard homers.

Am I the only one who doesn't want him to pass it? 99 forever. I just saw that Gretz holds the record for playoff points with the Oilers (shocker) with 252 in 120 games. Second is Connor McPunchFace with 117 in 72. He also holds the Kings record with 94 in 60. Kopitar has 80 through 97.

Cripes.....fighting has gotten so pathetic in the NHL now, it's almost embarrassing. Wrestling and face scrubs. It's like the Japanese League out there. We need more George MacPhee-Nevin Markwart fights. Old time hockey.

Having said that, watching Josh Manson tune up Jamie Benn a few years ago was enjoyable.

Watching Manson drop Benn will never get old.

Really disappointing to see the Avs give away a point like that. Avs/Stars is gonna be a fun series.

Give away is an appropriate term. The forward depth for Colorado is absolutely brilliant. They looked much faster, more skilled, and just overall more noticeable. Val Nichuskin is a fucking horse. What a fumble by Dallas not sticking with that guy.

Well basically all the players have face visors now and they don’t seem to drop buckets along with gloves, so what’s the point of throwing?

that's not how that went down, but whatever. I won't cry over lost russian players. he didn't want to play in dallas - it was pretty clear on the ice and in the locker room. at least we dodged all the substance abuse and suspensions.

maybe is doing a ton of work there.

Who else produces like Val for just over $6 million a year? Granted, his substance issues need to be behind him but when he's on his game, he's a beast.

The answer is fucking nobody. Kid just doesn’t want to acknowledge that his team dumped him on unconditional waivers.

Well, since you asked. I'm in week two of my fantasy hockey playoffs so I'm chock full of stats.

Right now Val is rated as the #102 overall player in the league based on average stats (I prefer average stats per game over raw stats when analyzing players).

If I were to go up and down that list five skaters, I come up with:

Nazem Kadri(94)-$7M
Andrei Svechnikov (96)-$7.75M
Wyatt Johnston (97)- $8.4M
Artturi Lehkonen(100)-$4.5M
Dylan Holloway(101)-$2.29M
Valeri Nichushkin(102)-$6.125M
Jordan Kyrou-(103)-$8.125M
Kevin Fiala(106)-$5.1M
Travis Konecny-(107)-$6M
Shea Theodore
Dmitri Voronkov(110)-$925k
Mason Marchment(111)-$4.5M

The bolded represent 6 players just in that list I would take before I signed Val - especially Fiala and Marchment. Provide the same game without the baggage. But even on his own team I think Lehkonen is a better bargain. He's been off and on my roster while Val hasn't because he isn't reliable.

This doesn’t tell me much considering I don’t know which stats you are referencing or which weights are assigned to which inputs. Your list also includes wingers and centers, which makes me think this isn’t necessarily an apples to apples analysis.

You might also be taking a bit of a homer approach if you prefer Marchment over Nichushkin. I don’t have a dog in this fight, but there’s no way I’m ever taking Marchment over Nichushkin, regardless of the off ice issues. Not that Marchment isn’t a nice player, he’s just not Val. Val has scored nearly 20 goals over the last 3 post season, and that includes two early exits due to off ice issues. Marchment is not anywhere near that level of production.

It's an average of every non-advanced metric you can name. Yes, i included all forwards because players bounce around. For instance,  Val is listed as both a LW and RW. Anyway, we can agree to disagree on finer points, but character matters and Val has demonstrated he has little. He didn't want to play for us, so why would I want him. I'd take a bag of pucks over a good player that doesn't want to play for my team

Don't put words in my mouth. You said that, not me. I said we avoided his substance abuse (as far as we know) and that he had low character because he tanked his play while he was with us (or was he lit like a christmas tree? - we may never know). it was obvious he didn't want to be in Dallas and there was hesitance drafting him in the first place in large part due to the reputation of russian players but also because of him specifically. he's done nothing buy prove them right. whatever, I don't care enough to continue this. you like having him on your team, great. I'm just as happy with him off of it. everyone wins. moving on.

they're not allowed to remove their helmets. if they come off, fine, but the player is not allowed to remove them to fight

What a stupid take -- Nuke was/is a huge piece of shit who left Dallas no choice but to move on.  The Avs have a lot more patience, which he has rewarded by missing the playoffs the last two seasons because of his stupid fuckery.

He also won them a cup. You Stars fans conveniently leave that part out every time.  Also, how’s the guy a piece of shit? What has he done that warrants him being a piece of shit?

Christ, you fucking Mary. That incident was investigated by both the NHL and Seattle PD, both of which absolved him of any wrongdoing. Just say you’re bitter that your dumb fucking team placed him on unconditional waivers.

This is how bad the Bruins season has become. I’m arguing about a player that doesn’t even play on the team I root for. Fuck you, Don Sweeney.  I’d rather hang out with Val Nichushkin than that Harvard douche.

He didn't want to play in Dallas, so obviously he's a piece of shit. Unless his addiction makes him a piece of shit.

here is your reason. After a promising first season, the rest is ugly. 2 years in the khl and then he comes back to ZERO goals in 57 games.  They gave him every opportunity in Dallas.

how did he suddenly get so much better in Denver?  Actually trying?

Teams do play different systems, which affects players’ games. See Mikko in Colorado vs Carolina.

Fair. So why say Dallas gave up on him?

The unconditional waivers part. Could have at least received something back for him but they just let him go for nothing.

He's a huge drunk and a huge asshole.  Not the way most of Surly is either.   He spent all of about 5 games in Cedar Park, but everyone in that organization was thrilled to see him gone.

Lol, yup, goal scoring = good character. Just stop. You're clowning yourself. No one here is denying he's talented. We, Stars fans who have been following his story since before he was drafted, say his talent doesn't outmatch his liability. The Stars management saw it too and that's why there was a host of articles about the pros and cons of taking him. Good for him being a contributor to a cup team. But to say he won a cup for the avs is just stupid hyperbole and not worth any more conversation. Much like everything i typed before this. Oversold mid player. We've already given him too much oxygen.
