The Fair on Game Day

Gate B was an absolute shit show pregame.  We got there by probably 1:45, waited 15 minutes and barely moved.  I think the gate was smaller than normal due to construction but I swear those fucking morons only had 2 people scanning tix and there were thousands trying to get in.  I realized the situation and fought back through the crowd around the food court then went in gate C without much delay at all.  From the concourse up above, I was trying to direct Texas fans to ditch gate B and pivot to C. It seemed like few realized what I was doing and left but most just rode it out.  There is no way most made kickoff despite trying to get in 40 minutes before game.  That is just flat out unacceptable.    Absolute incompetence by the Cotton Bowl staff.  They should have had 4X more ticket takers there + crowd control directing people to gates with smaller lines.

You’re right. Only 2 people were scanning the tickets of thousands of fans. There was a supervisor who also had a scanner, but he was only scanning those, like me, whose tickets were being rejected by the two others. And his rejected me also. Then he wouldn’t help at all. Told me there was no other option but for me to go outside and fight against the flow to get to will call.

Maybe it would have helped if there were some sort of resolution specialist who could move between the gates on the inside. There’s no movement outside the stadium at that point and the guy couldn’t have given a shit less that my money was essentially being stolen at that point.

Well get there early or that's on you. The Fair Park area is what it is. We approached our favored parking lot at 9:50 and got right in. When we left we got out pretty easily because we parked right by the exit and walked farther out. There are ways around the mess, you just have to find them. As far as DART, it was designed poorly because they didn't go elevated with the rail line to avoid cross traffic because it was too expensive. If bisects two major streets that lead to 30. There is no way to have only trains go through other than shutting down all streets around the northern end of the Fair. Sure, it's a design flaw but they weren't thinking of Texas OU when they were putting a line meant to service Southern Dallas commuters.

THis.  I love the 2:30.  get to the parking just north of stadium off haskell at 9:30.  no line to get in.  no line to get corny dog or beer.  find the 4 ticket cheep beer booth and remember the number posted on the tent column next to it.

walk around to car show and other stuff.

sit in the shade almost the entire game.  hang out for 30 min or so after the game and then head home.

the 11AM game means you have to rush your ass off to get down there the same time 100K other people are trying to get there as well.

continuing with the DART "problem" before moving on to the State Fair fuckery.....

when you take the primary Fair Park exit from I-30 to 2nd Avenue you are directly on top of the DART Central Operating Facility:

fairparkDART.thumb.jpg.dc0700ea4da5fafd133c465cf7ef69bd.jpg

there is a little-known one-mile spur connector south from the Central Facility which meets the blue/red line where it curves from north to west before the approach to the Cedars Station:

DARTsecretline.thumb.jpg.bd4189d2d769a382975dbc4db09a7bf2.jpg

it is a bi-directional dual-track spur

with adequate inter-agency command and control there is enough space in the run-up track IN BOTH DIRECTIONS at the Fair Park station to accommodate THREE trains which would be coordinated to pull up, board or off-board pax, and pull forward enough to accommodate the train/trains ahead/behind, and operate SIX trains in "pods", 3 trains going each direction, with officer-directed intersection and rail-crossing control, such that vehicle and pedestrian traffic would flow uninterrupted in designated directions for 5 minutes at a time while the trains loaded or unloaded

northbound trains would continue to baylor station and downtown normally

southbound trains would curve through the central facility, take the spur, and join the red/blue line before cedars, and proceed to union station

then, these same cars would circle back empty

yes, this would entail the suspension of normal downtown / south dallas service

take all of the rolling stock available plus what normally serves the green/blue/red lines from downtown and devote it exclusively to Texas/0u ONE DAY A YEAR

thist would increase the capacity/utilization 12x to 15x over what we see today

it would become THE WAY to get in to and out of Fair Park on game day

and it's criminal that 41 years after the first vote establishing DART this plan is being conjured by someone on the internet because the powers that be are fucktards incapable of contemplating the time and treasure required to document, rehearse and execute this imminently cunning plan

It was also much less of a clusterfuck due to no gameday clogging up everything in front of the stadium.

the people who were standing in line for 30 min going into gate D were hilarious.  if you walked 30 yards around the back of the stadium you could walk right in.

I think I'm definitely going to do upper deck tix from now on.  our lower bowl end zone is a complete disaster. 2:30 kick means sun is behind us until about 3:45 at most and not in your face like a 11AM game.

Only on the press box side to probably 115. We were in 113 and honestly it was fine after we sat down thanks to the breeze. By the 2nd half, no sun at all in our section. The other side of the stadium was full sun all game.

for sure.  I'm only ever sitting on press box side.  can't get 108 but maybe 109 for sure 110.  with the way the overhang works in the cotton bowl, upper deck really isn't bad.

2:30 is so much better.  you just have to not depend on DART ever and get there around 9:30ish.

I can see folks that don't have a place to stay in Dallas(from Austin/Houston) would want 11AM because you might have to get hotel for 2 nights unless you do the early run Sat morning.

Very good point.  Texas played SMU in a game there during the mid-90's.  I attended that game, then helped run concessions for my brother's band fund that evening during an HBCU game.  There were gun shots, which sent people sprawling all over the place.  If that had happened after the game yesterday, there would have been a Liverpool-esque death tally.

This. All it would’ve taken yesterday was one or two people to shove and we could have been looking at multiple deaths. Absolute fuck show getting into the stadium and getting out was even worse.  Unacceptable. Right now, I’m planning on skipping next year and going to Athens instead.  We’ll see what actually happens, but that was not a fun experience. Probably my 25-30th game and it’s never been like that.

Hat tip for next year.  Park at the other end of the Green Line (Buckner Station).  I was worried that it'd bottleneck downtown, so I tried out the south end of the Green Line and was back at my truck 15 mins after leaving the Fair.  We were back in Rowlett by 7.  Our train car had 5 people in it.

This is genius.

There are pretty simple solutions in my opinion:

1.  Fix entrances/exits.  Hopefully the renovations help from an infrastructure perspective.  But with the current set up a lot of problems can be fixed with more staff.   Pay Cowboys stadium employees whatever is needed to come work for the day.  There was simply no excuse to not have more people scanning tix to alleviate the pregame bottlenecks.

2.  Fix bathrooms/concessions.  Again, hopefully the renovation helps but they simple have to figure out a way to get more staff.  You shouldn't have to risk miss a quarter of football to run to restroom and grab a beer or whatever.  Texas has certainly improved this significantly over the past several years at home games.

3.  Cap non-game attendees or increase pricing to reduce from that perspective.  This is the one that will be hard to accomplish because I have no doubt the vendors make an absolute killing on this day.  But it's a real problem that seems to have gotten worse post-Covid.  As others have said, I can't fathom having a family 'fair day' during Texas OU but every year clearly a ton of people there that don't care about the game.

I think there are a shit ton of people with tickets on the "other side" and our end zone of the cotton bowl(including our students) who go in the main entrance every fuckin year.  pro tip. if your ticket is on the opposite side from the front entrance GO TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE to enter.

Correct. There is nothing wrong with entry there is mass idiocy on which gate to go in.

yes. It shocks me that anyone who has been to that game/fair more than 7 or 8 times in their life doesn't understand.

1. don't use DART(admittedly this helps me because of fewer cars)

2. leave 4 hours before game time at least(this of course depends where you are staying).  we were near Royal and Central and left at 10AM and took 20 minutes to get to spot.

3. park near haskell, north side/back side of stadium or east side of fair.

4. do not go in the main entrance, go to back side and walk around(everyone else is jammed up outside).  I haven't gone in the main entrance(or even C or D) in 20 years.

5. piss before you go in, piss halfway through the second quarter, limit intake to make it until halfway through 4th. bonus piss, get pass out check at halftime and piss at the Embarcadero.

6. get coupons at end of the midway early.  no wait because everyone stops at the first coupon stand they see. buy extra, you can use next year.  Caveat - do not buy extra if you are really old or pissed because the game is at 2:30 and won't ever be back.

7. after game if going north, from north side get to Carroll over to Main.  the lights are timed on Main which turns into Columbia which turns in to Abrams.

I do like the poster idea of parking at Buckner at the green line.  the ONE time my wife wanted to use DART, after the game we couldn't get on at the fair stops(total shitshow) going north so we went south I think to Hatcher, got off, and then went north.  no more DART.

There were email blasts about the construction temporary fucking up entrances and warning to get there early. Anybody that’s been to this game before and knows how bad it is normally should have known to allow 2/3x more time.

My group mostly arrived at the fair around 9. Did our fair stuff with no lines before it got really busy. Got in to the stadium in 5 minutes about 90 minutes before kickoff and hung out in the shade on the concourses until 20 minutes before.
parked in my normal spot and had no issues getting in or out.

yeah, 5.5 hrs is a little more time than I need before the game. Still prefer the 11am kick and getting there at 7:30. But that would have been brutal yesterday having the full stadium bake in the sun for 4 full hours instead of half.

Everyone bitching about this has give the improvements a chance. That’s the fucking point: it’s been bad, they recognized it. They’re doing something about it.

If it’s still like this next year, then by all means…

This.  Walked into the fair at 9:30 no line.  For 11 games I get there at 8:00. Ate some food and drank a few beers.  Looked around more than usual because of the time.

Walked into the stadium at 1:15 with no line.

Got the drinks I needed for my mixers and never left the seats the whole game.

Stop complaining and show up early.

Here. Bunch of vaginal whining in this thread.

It's a fucking epic day unmatched in all of sports. Some inconvenience. But if you can't plan for it (ie., yes, get there early) / and or tolerate a few things fucking stay at home in front of your television. There's a ton of people that will be happy to go in your place.

Dear lord.

Yeah if Gameday returns, the Fair cannot let them set up in front of the Cotton Bowl again. I forgot what year it was that they were near the Texas Star and that was a huge improvement. I think it was 2018. I get that they want their scenic shot of the Cotton Bowl in the background but they made that area a massive shitfest.

Yes but it does have limited space and can block the flow of movement. This year, the SEC Network morning show was there until 11am. There was one year where both Fox and ESPN had their morning shows there. Maybe it was 2018.

We arrived at 7:30, parked in the lot at Gate 2 on the NW corner, and was able to park immediately on the left, rather than having to do the long drive down by the bridge. Walked right into the fair, and man it was awesome with cool crisp air and really empty. Had a Fletcher's with zero wait, and just enjoyed three or so hours of no lines, a non-sauna Food Court, etc. Loved it!  Sat down at a picnic table in the shade by the Lagoon and relaxed, and enjoyed some 5 coop can beer from the Gulf Coast Grill. Can >>>>> wax cup on keeping beer cold.

About 11, it got warm and a bit crowded. Our normal sit space at The Dock was reserved, so a bit more wandering and Food Court time. Entered the stadium around 1:15, through Gate J. Our tickets were 103, but J looked very uncrowded, and that seemed easier to enter and then circle rather than fight into the Coliseum/Cotton Bowl Plaza area. Took maybe 4 minutes to get into the stadium. Was definitely annoying after getting to seats, wife wanted a Gatorade, which is only at the concessions in the end zone upper deck, not the "old" upper deck, and so went back through the ramp/stairs, waited like 25 minutes in line, for them to say they "just ran out" of Gatorade, when it's still 45 minutes to kick. How literally fucking stupid do you have to be to run out of a nonperishable good, that will be in high demand due to conditions, that you are selling at a 300% markup? Legitimately how bad must someone hate money?

It was hot in the stadium, but the towel and low humidity helped. 2013 as an example felt roughly 20 degrees hotter. I exchanged "hope of winning" for "shade from the sun" at about the 3:00 mark in Q2, which wasn't a good deal but I'd rather have one of those than neither.

We sat in the seats maybe 15-20 min after the final gun to let the mob clear, exited through Cotton Bowl Plaza which was annoying but not stifling, and were able to get a few more items without egregious hassle. Left about 8 and rolled right out and onto Haskell, and back to our AirBnB in 25 minutes, no traffic issues exiting whatsoever.

Yeah was watching from inside up above looking down near the Texas end zone gate and it was like this mass crowd. A short 50 yards away the gates were streaming people in with little wait.  Its like people didn't see a line and thought that they couldn't actually be entrances or something.

Yep. People still complaining about car traffic in and around any major event are the exact ones that contribute to the mass congested car traffic in and around major events in the first place. No different than people complaining about everyday rush hour traffic when they are the traffic. You figure it out by getting to your destination early or avoid those congested roads another way.

For us we have always just parked far away for free near Winters Park and just bike/ride down the nice paved uncongested Santa Fe Trail down to the fairground. Then just lock up all of our bikes/scooters right at the entrance. It's fun being able to ride my wheel on the Santa Fe trail right along the DART waving at all the passengers inside.

My favorite that makes me laugh and cry for the stupidity of humankind is that one of the primary drivers is that when you give people coupons or chips at a casino etc they all of a sudden can’t keep track of how much they are spending. I’m not debating the practice because it obviously works but you gotta be some kind of dumbass to not be able to keep track and all of a sudden spend or gamble more just because you are handing over coupons or chips.

Lost is one thing, but tickets are reusable from year to year. The way it’s been explained to me in the past its so vendors can avoid transaction fees, keeps cash out of the vendors possession, quicker transaction (in theory) than other methods.

I’m sure they understand the factors better than I do, but I feel like transactions fees would be worth it in the long run relative to people saying “screw it” rather than get in line for more coupons or only needing a couple to top off a purchase which then doesn’t happen.

The coupon scam is designed to make it impossible to only pay for what you want.

And the enshittification factor went over the line when they changed the price of a coupon from 50 cents to 1 dollar, but none of the vendors changed the number of coupons to purchase ANYTHING.

A jumbo Fletchers went from $4 to $8.

Those 4-coupon Coors?  $2 to $4.

The ferris wheel?  $10 to $20.

Never reported, never discussed.

To be fair they were under priced and just got correctly priced.

I don't think the coupons are a scam and I like them. I always have $100 worth for next year when I leave intentionally and using the online ordering/pickup is quick and painless.

Everyone that is bitching is acting like a 200k+ person event that happens once a year that has no real reported incidents that I can find of violence, Serious medical emergency or otherwise is just a whiny fucking pussy.

Get to the fucking fair early, it's not hard. Everyone acting like they have something else going on all fucking day are blowhard assholes. No one is doing jack shit the rest of the day who is traveling to Dallas specifically for the game. Dallas residents have even less of an excuse.

Everything is fried are you fucking morons gonna complain about the lack of healthy low calorie options next?
