This isn’t what you are thinking.  NLI is not NIL.

I know what the difference is....

You don't think there will be something schools will make recruits sign when they commit to bind them to the school? I think with the way everything is going it will be a contract for their NIL rights for revenue sharing.

I don't see the legal basis for a hard, overall, salary cap - they could (plausibly) reach an agreement on what schools, themselves, can provide.  But there is simply no authority to cap/limit what a player can receive in actual endorsements (the "real" version of NIL).  Who is going to say Quinn Ewers can't do Dr. Pepper commercials for compensation?  The NFL has a salary cap for what teams can pay their players, but the NFL has no say in what players make in endorsements - nor should they.  Courts have already spiked attempts to limit player's ability to monetize their talents.

IMO we are going to have to differentiate NIL and revenue sharing deals. That's why I said yesterday that TOF will have to continue to operate at a high level to ensure retention and acquisition of elite talent even with revenue sharing in place by the school. I know CDC is on record of wanting to bring everything in house but IMO it's smarter to have TOF operate outside the scope of the university as they have since their inception.

This is the way.  Revenue sharing will establish the floor.  And some institutions floors will be higher than others although in the SEC and B1G it will be pretty close.  NIL will be the ceiling, and Texas' ceiling will be amongst the highest in the nation.

Am I misunderstanding this decision or does this completely neuter any need for a national signing day?  If there's nothing binding the player to she school, who gives a fuck if "recruit x is in!"

As a fan of a team likely to benefit among the most from this structure, there really needs to be something that binds players to schools.

No, I agree with your second post.  This is the NCAA waving the white flag.  I just hope it doesn’t lead to a salary cap.  If Texas can buy players like the Yankees then we should be allowed to.

NIL wouldn't, couldn't be affected by a "salary cap".  You can't regulated a person's private earnings potential.

Every profession operates with some set of rules. There are programs and kids that are going to sign their futures away because they make bad decisions under this system with no rules. Hope all these folks get together and figure something out. Crises always happen because of greed or stupid people in charge. The NCAA is an example of both.

But we don't. We aren't out there flaunting a $20 Million roster like tOSU. I could be wrong, but I think our strategy has been to let others set the market, then we come in and win the recruitment by matching the NIL or exceeding in must have dudes like Collin Simmons et al.

I've dreamed of this day for decades. The day when paying players was made legal, and Texas could run wild.
