French feminists have launched a campaign to ban “sexist” postcards of scantily clad women which they say are degrading and contribute to a “culture of rape”.

The Femmes Solidaires (Women’s Solidarity) group said the cards portray women as “sex objects that can be consumed and thrown away under the pretext of leisure and entertainment”.

The group urged its 10,000 members to look out for smutty postcards and report where they are being sold.

The cards depict women in skimpy bikinis, with captions such as “Big kisses from Roussillon”. One shows a female cyclist from behind, wearing a thong.

The campaign has triggered furious arguments on social media, with some defending the cards as “harmless and humorous”.

Some have defended the images as "harmless and humourous"

Julian, a designer, told Le Parisien newspaper that smutty postcards are “not very good taste, and frankly crude, but they are part of popular culture… It’s up to me to explain to my nine-year-old daughter that they’re rubbish and demeaning.”

The women’s group said they “contribute to a culture of rape that imposes a degrading image of women and helps to legitimise and normalise violence against women.”

The campaign came days after the French parliament passed a landmark law against sexual violence giving police new powers to impose on-the-spot fines on men who harass women in the street.

Mobile phone footage of a man punching a woman in a Paris street last week after she told him to stop harassing her caused international outrage.

Marlène Schiappa, the gender equality minister, said the new law would mark a turning-point: “From now on, there’s a fear of punishment,” said Ms Schiappa.

“This isn’t about creating an American-style society: I don’t want to ban men and women from taking lifts together. But we must do more to explain [the problem].”

She said French men had started modifying their behaviour, under pressure from the #MeToo movement, since Harvey Weinstein was accused of rape and sexual assault.

The Hollywood producer has denied all allegations of abuse, but admitted inappropriate behaviour. Ms Schiappa said French men in powerful positions should understand that “they are not being reproached for being seducers, but for sexual harassment.”

OMG...can't believe they still make these!  A girl I went to school with (smokin' hot with very nice titties) used to wear a t-shirt that read "How do you like my Tiddies?"  Of course, we used to tease her about it, and of course, she loved it....
