Just a stunning level of incompetence. After all the trades he’s done so well the last couple years, this just makes zero sense.

I don't think this is incompetence. Nico has shown up until yesterday that he was competent. I think something nefarious happened here.

I don’t think they were

The Adelsons probably assumed the Texas legislature was as corrupt as the Nevada legislature and they could just buy the needed votes to legalize gambling in Texas.  But the Texas GOP has already been bought and paid for by Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks, who do not support the sin of gambling.  So the Adelsons either: a) didn’t do their homework, b) miscalculated their ability to buy votes, c) always intended to move the Mavs to Vegas, or d) are just cheap owners.

I said at the time when Cuban sold the team he must have gotten himself into debt of some sort. I wonder if this trade is about hurting Cuban as much as anything else

He very matter of factly stated that he felt the NBA’s valuations and popularity were about as high as they’d ever be.   Selling most at the top and keeping a little skin in the game

I've always been a Cuban fan/defender, but it's become crystal clear that he sold us out to an awful family. I was having a hard enough time with that before this shit. Now, I can't imagine ever rooting for them again. But then you have guys on the team still (for the next few days anyway) that I absolutely love like Ky, PJ, Gaff, D-Live. They don't deserve any hate whatsoever, but here we are.

Hell, I told my son this morning to feel free to root for the fucking Lakers if he wants. The fucking Lakers. Maybe that will change as more info comes out, but the bullshit spin Nico is already feeding the press leads me to believe it's all them and not Luka. If it was Luka they'd be saying he wanted out from the jump.

Cuban is a scam artist.

Completely anecdotal, but I split 4 tickets with a group of 10 friends and to a man we’ve all said we are done today. Doesn’t help that the new owners have been jacking up the price every year and a few of us were getting disillusioned anyway.

Maybe after the shock wears off and if we play well with AD some of them will reconsider, but I think I’m done. Only way I get tickets is if they cut the price by like 50% (lol) and I can go to games to mainly check out other teams/players I want to see.

This is absolutely self sabotage by the new ownership. There is zero other explanation. Tank the fanbase interest, then tell the NBA they need to move to Vegas. Exactly what happened to the Oakland A's. This isn't the Cowboys. Dallas fanbase will quit giving a fuck and it will start very soon. Mavs already lost hundreds of thousands of fans on their IG. And the owners are close to the Lakers, right? What better way to self sabotage by giving them Luka for nothing. Not even shopping around a player of this magnitude in his mid 20s? Collusion at its finest.

Honestly, I hope this poverty franchise moves to Vegas this decade.

The 25 years of Cuban building up “MFFL” died whenever we all got the text that Luka was traded.

The Mavs are dead to me. I don’t owe them shit. Went to dozens of games in the 90’s when they were the worst team in the league.

Well, I don’t think it’s a miscalculation. It’s a win-win for them.
This trade ruins any chance that Dallas will support building a new arena, but it also gives the Lakers their next global superstar at a time when the league needs it. So as mad as Dallas is, the league is very happy with the Adelsons right now.
That’s relevant because:

1) the local fans are going to turn their backs on the franchise and the city will NOT support a new arena anymore, and that’s when the league green lights moving teams (see also Seattle, Golden State). And the Adelsons now have the ability to go to the lege in 26 and credibly say “we can’t build a new arena because the fans won’t vote for it. Give us a casino and we will build it, or we take the team to Vegas and build a new casino around it there”.

2) if the leg says no, the league will permit the move and the Adelsons win.

3) if the leg opens yes, North Texas gets casino gambling and the Adelsons win.

Why wouldnt the NBA just make an expansion team in Vegas instead of going through all this hassle to abandon a top 5 market?

Because revenue is at risk of declining if viewership continues to drop and they can’t afford to dilute it further. The league doesn’t want to abandon Dallas, but they want the lakers to have a big stars and contend every year.

If the league is that desperate then the league won’t be around in 10-20 years anyway. You cannot sacrifice top 5 markets to make one team good, even if it’s the Lakers.

Occam’s razor they are just really shitty owners. Plenty of cities have lived through this. They just didn’t have as valuable of an asset to squander.

How many of you would be apathetic if we make a championship run with AD and this current version of the team? How many would be all in like you are now?

I'd watch, but I don't think I'd be emotionally invested.

I don’t think we’re going to have to worry about this. This roster makes zero sense. They’re aren’t making a run to the finals.

We don’t have nearly enough ball handlers or shot creators. AD wants to play the 4 which means PJ is playing a lot more 3. I honestly don’t know how that works offensively and I don’t think we have a good coach to make it work.  I don’t think we’re going to be able to play good enough defense to overcome that.

We don't really have a point guard on the team.  Yes I know, Kyrie.  But even then he's more a 2 in our system... We've tried piece mealing it with Grimes/hardy/ dinwiddie/PJ/Naji but it's been a disaster on the turnover front.  We need exum back.  And we need to sign Grimes to an extension.

we've needed a guy like AD for years to pair with Luka, we finally got him!

Chris Paul should be available and he is in the right age range.

You don’t execute a trade of this magnitude without telling your bosses.  Withholding a potential franchise-killing from them and not getting buy-in is a firable offense in and of itself.

It's all BS from Nico.  everyone in the org knew and so did Cuban.

I don't think so. Someone would have leaked. And cuban has no business knowing, it wouldn't affect anything.

I just watched the press conference. And I’m pretty convinced that Nico has no fucking idea what he is doing.

Other reports are saying the first deal in place had Knecht, Christie, AD the 2 picks and swaps. Then over time Pelinka worked over Nico with negative Luka talk and got it to this

This analysis of the deal is pretty compelling. It is consistent with some of the views here on surly. It answers the one question I couldn’t really figure out. Why give Luka to the Lakers? According to this analysis, it’s so the NBA won’t interfere with the tanking or the move to Vegas.  I really think this is what’s really going on.

Can anyone give a tl;dr since it's on twitter.

Thanks

Adelsons are purposely tanking the Mavs because the Texas legislature rejected their gambling casino bid. They will screw up the franchise so badly that the nba will approve a move to Vegas, or the Texas legislature in 2027 will finally approve their casino. Giving Luka to the Lakers helps nba numbers so they will let it all happen. The really shocking statement in there is that the Adelsons have stated they could care less about basketball. They did this to get a casino in Texas. Ugh.

If you want to take this further, ask why Cuban would sell to them and why the NBA would allow themselves to get strong-armed like this? Just my speculation, but anyone who has significant gambling assets must have ties to organized crime, which can make things very uncomfortable for anyone who stands in their way. Why those tactics didn’t bring the Texas legislature under control isn’t clear.

The nba doesn’t just unilaterally decide to move franchises. The other owners have to approve the moves. Why would the owners approve a Mavs move to Vegas when they can put an expansion team there and reap billions? I assure you that there are more owners pissed off that they didn’t get a chance to bid on Luka than there are ones saying, “Oh look how good it is for the league to have Luka in purple and gold.” Don’t buy this conspiracy theory.

I think Nico panicked about the next contract and the new ownership group was too green to understand the consequences. And I think Pelinka took his buddy to the cleaners.

Nico Harrison is many things, but “green” he is not.

It is more likely that either he’s playing 3D chess and the Mavs will actually benefit from this or he is personally positioning himself for something 3-5 years out than it is that he got “taken” by anyone. Rob Pelinka is clever enough, but In an ocean of sharks, Nico Harrison is 20ft Great White.

Man I feel sorry for Dallas fans.  You guys have to suffer through Jerry Jones endless hope destroying seasons, and now your best owner gave away control and Luka is gone.

At least Cuban disavowed endorsing the trade.  But that's what happens when you give up control.  You become along for the ride.
