Woody Hayes was fired for a similar action, in like 1978.  Unbelievable that this asshole gets off scot free in 2024.

I wanted so so badly for that sideline interference penalty to be on Kirby, with his penchant for constantly being on the field and all. Of course if it was him it would probably been a warning.  Oh well maybe next year

Ref wouldn't have thrown the flag if it was Kirby.

I wasn't paying particularly close attention -- was there any chance ND committed a false start in all that mess?

The thing I read said that as long as the snapper didn’t touch the ball, it was ok. Again, fuck Kirby smart.

No. He appeared to be whining that the center moved the ball to cause the off sides. Replay shows ND was set and still. UGA players clearly jumped off sides.

The receiver down at the bottom may have false started but who gives a shit and that movement certainly wasn't what caused the guys in the middle to blow their loads.

Did Kirby have any comment on the phantom procedural call that negated a ND first down late in the game that the rules expert said wasn't a penalty?

Matt Austin was wrong about that one, too. He had a terrible few days as a "rule expert." It was a ticky tack call for sure, but the WR started his motion before the TE had become completely set after his shift.

Yeah, it was pretty obvious that Austin was wrong...

Matt Austin seems to push certain narratives. He has shown himself to be biased or completely ignorant.

what Texas play are you taking about?

Sean McDonough kind of blew up at him over of one of his explanations during a game a couple of months ago.

Don't know who was right, but sometimes McDonough is a dummy.

It was in SEC championship. We were in punt formation and shifted the entire line. I had the same question while watching last night

Was the center over the ball, with hands on it?  Did anyone get into a 3 point stance?  If so, they must stay until the ball is snapped.

Well, according to Kirby, the sec refs don’t know the rules. I think in the champ game, one of the announcers mentioned someone moved that had gotten set or some nonsense. It was definitely made up sounding.

The dumbest part of that whole punt substitution deal was how fast Georgia got their subs in. They were under no obligation to rush out there like that, were they? They should have taken their sweet ass time getting back on the field and forced ND to take a time out or delay of game. The FFR that coaches Illinois has made a practice out of doing that against hurry up teams that sub late.

Yes!  Jesus tapdancing Christ, Yes!  It's exactly the thing Okie State did on us last year and we did on someone (Mississippi State?) this year.  If the offense substitutes, the referee is going to stand over the ball and let the defense substitute.  And the defense doesn't have to hurry.  They can take however long it takes.  So if a fat defensive lineman takes five seconds to haul his tired ass to the sideline, then the offense runs the risk of a delay-of-game penalty.

But once again--neither the players nor the coaches understand the rules of the game.  It's absolutely infuriating.

Some talking head today said they were in a time out, so if that's true, they DEFINITELY didn't need to hurry.  That said, I don't recall hearing a time out called.

The play clock had just started when ND ran their guys off. It hits about 19 or so when they are all off the field. Even with Georgia sprinting out there, the official didn't move off the ball until there was 5 seconds on the clock. Just monumentally stupid. Even a slight delay from Georgia screws that whole thing up.

Yeah, I can't remember what game it was -- could have been NFL for all I remember -- but I recall seeing a defensive substitution force the ref to stand there while the clock ran to zero and the offense got hit with a delay of game penalty.  They still had time outs, too.

Does it bother anybody else that between this and the targeting calls in our game, that it seems that nobody understands the rules of the fucking game?  I mean, even people whose jobs it is to know the rules don't know the rules.  The supposed "rules experts" on ESPN are constantly getting shit wrong.

Kirby is here citing the SEC head of officiating rather than the actual rules, which implies that he hasn't read the fucking rulebook.  He's just taking someone else's word on what the rulebook says.  Hey Kirby--how about you tell me what the actual fucking rule is, you dolt.

Sir you must be lost. This is college football.

I think the targeting rule or the interpretation of it has changed, last year or 2 that Taeffe hit would have 100% been targeting. But this year there is more leeway on lunging intent. That is why Bond was not "targeted" and why in that Miami game that they were bailed it was not targeting either, the ASU player that was ejected in the CCG was off the ground and leading with the crown of his helmet and therefore targeting.

Nope. The WR in question was pointing to the UGA players jumping offsides.  The center doesn't move until the Georgia players jump.

This. Just lazily jog out there and hit them with delay of game.

That said, UGA panicked at the moment.

I've seen it go both ways.  Offense substitutes late and gets hit with the delay of game, or defense lazily subs and gets hit with 12 men on the field.  There isn't a set amount of time, I think the rule calls for a reasonable amount of time, in which subbing your whole unit should be pretty substantial, but you are still at the refs discretion of reasonable.

Interior lineman cannot break their stance once they are on the line of scrimmage.  ND committed 4 false starts.

We'll almost assuredly get a rule revision this offseason forbidding substitutes with less than X on the play clock.

Wow I had not seen the false start by the receiver. That should be what they’re bitching about, not the rules they don’t know.

You know what they should be upset about? That they get to watch the rest of the playoffs from their living rooms.

Fuck Georgia.

But in the post game, Kirby said he knew that ND was trying to force him to take a timeout, so it's clear from his statement that his focus was getting out there quickly enough to NOT take a timeout.

In other words, he thought the strategy was to avoid a timeout, not to force a delay of game. He had not thought it all the way through. And he likely still has not, since he is a lying know-it-all who usually gets his way.

Did Kirby even name that official? I'm wondering if it is even true an SEC official told him that, or is he just looking for an excuse for getting played.

I've liked Marcus Freeman, think he is doing a hell of a job. I like him even more after last night... seeing his smirk after a couple of the plays that worked, was priceless.

apparently the decision as to whether or not a defense is stalling while substituting is a judgment call by the officials. If the offense substitutes late in the play clock then the officials are more likely to call the delay on the offense. However, if the offense substitutes early and the defense has plenty of time to sub and stalls, then the officials can call it on the defense.

what I've seen teams do is take their sweet time with the sub without running out the play clock - forcing the offense to hurry. It's risky to run it all the way down because the defense runs the risk of the zebras calling the penalty on the defense.

We were on the wrong end of one of these in a previous game, but I can't recall how late in the play clock we subbed off.

IMHO since ND started the substitution with about 25 seconds left they were likely going to get called for the delay if UGA stalled.

You can count on the fact that we'll be on the short end of the deal most times.

I’m almost certain it was us either vs Clemson or UGA.   Ref stood over the ball until the clock ran down and we got the delay of game penalty on offense.

The WR false started but fortunately for him his job was so "block down" so he jerked his head and upper body a bit sideways but didn't move forward or flex his legs.  he also sold it like he was looking inside.

The Georgia DB sees it and points but it isn't called.  you can see the WR come down to block the end.
