He has to be conservative because he can’t trust Ewers to throw down the field….   He's doing everything he can to build his confidence but it ain’t working.  He hesitates like that vs Arky and A&M they might lose.  Hes not seeing open guys, he’s holding it too long, he’s not very often close to accurate when he throws downfield, he just plain looked lost and afraid when they showed him before the snap a couple times.  The offense is totally off when he’s like this, obviously.  What’s the answer, sports psychiatrist or hypnotist for Ewers, pull him for Arch?  No clue but something has to change if this keeps up or it will be a very disappointing season with the talent on offense and how the defense is playing.

That's my fear about going to an abysmal Fayetnam. They're terrible, but so is Quinn. The noise that crowd will make will crush Ewers. Like, the same way he looked against UGA. As for aggy, I'm not too worried. We just need all of our weapons firing on all cylinders to make plays happen. We have the defense to hold them to nothing, but our offense is just...so bad. I don't have an answer, either. Put in Arch? Try and calm Ewers down (don't see that happening), or just run the ball and screens all game. He can't throw down the field or he'll get picked. Wingo needs to step up his game, but using him on reverses needs to happen more.

It was cool seeing Pavia face after getting tackled. The face of “ these guys are big and fast holy shit “. That was the best thing besides the w. Much like ok freshman qb. Our defense can run. Hopefully they get healthier and play with more confidence cause I think they can win a few for us if needed.

Yeah. I don't have a lot more to say on the offensive issues that hasn't already been expressed in some way.

The defense played a really strong game today. What Vanderbilt got, they earned. The defense is a nationally elite unit that will keep Texas in every game and will likely win a couple more outright like it did this one. Wish it didn't have to, but the fact that it can is pretty cool.

I believe Helm is targeted by opposing coaches with the refs pre game as is Banks.  you can't just say watch holding.  you have to tell the ref exactly what to look for from a player.

Sark needs to get all over the refs on this shit and PI.  I hate that you have to do it every damn game but it is part of the job now.  Vandy never held once?  Even when their little QB starts dancing and then jumps outside?  No one grabbed at all?  Bullshit.

meanwhile we/OL are pulverizing people on straight outside runs and what do you know "holding".

Yep…. This game reminded me of a  game a few years ago in Stillwater reffed by Kevin Mars crew where we were racked up 100 yards plus in penalty yards and I think they had zero.   You can’t tell me a team like Okie State that throws the ball like they do is not going to get called for a hold at least once due to that pocket breaking down.  The same in this game, but it’s not  because Vandy throwing the ball 30 times a game.  It’s the fact our defense, man for man has more speed and naturally run offenses which lack speed are going compensate with trying to hold on to whatever they can upfront so they won’t get beat.

My worry is boneheaded mistakes like unnecessary roughing the passer to erase a pick six. That's just undisciplined and stupid.

1) that stadium is small and seating access is stupid

2) that bullshit dj and fog horn noise blasting at a million decibels during huddle and into play call sometimes was super fucking annoying. Anyone who bitches about the Jumbotron at DKR would hate vandy

3) by and large vandy fans were cool and I have zero complaints on that front

4) the “hidden” bathroom and beer stand up the ramp in the gym area was a 100% a massive time saver vs the other lines.

5) ewers needs to take a geometry class

6) defense was good.

I want to give him slack and say it’s because he’s dealing with a head case in real time and under pressure. Maybe that’s me just wish casting?

My theory is that he sees talent and execution, on the practice field, and gameplans based on what he really believes the team can execute.

I think he is a bit spoiled by having worked with Alabama talent in that sense.  I think this was exacerbated when he first got here and we had a lot of "paper" or theoretical talent that, for whatever reasons, couldn't get it done on the field.

Then he has game time players that execute at a level considerably below his expectations, Ewers being a fine, but not the only, example.

His choice then seems to be to dumb down the game plan or try to force his players to execute in the manner in which he thinks they're capable.  He usually chooses the latter.

I think this explains some of his decisions not to "take the points," but hope that his players can have an epiphany of execution that they can utilize for the rest of the game.

It seems to be true that when they are executing, it builds on itself.  But they aren't executing on a very consistent level right now, Ewers because injury/head case and OL possibly because they are encountering adversity and athleticism for the first time.

This one annoyed me as it looked like 3 (smith?) had plenty of angle to turn him back inside and into the pursuit, but fucked up and let him run right around him with a terrible angle.

Guilbeau. Yeah, that was the oh shit moment where he realized taking a normal angle wasn’t going to cut it. It got much better after that.

The second tipped pick was far worse than the first in terms of fault IMO. Even good QBs get occasional tipped passes from the pocket from time to time. There was no good excuse for the second one into an incoming pass rusher coming in hot like that.

Frustratingly, Quinn’s postgame comments about these was basically, “yeah I was unlucky.” No responsibility, no introspection about what he could have done differently. Pretty clear to anyone watching the second instance could have been avoid by actually attempting to move before making the throw.

At game. First Bank stadium was a death trap. No business playing there. Vandy shouldnt be in SEC with that piece of shit stadium.

Also, they played music and blasted their fart horn well into our plays. Bush league.

Music played throughout including horrific EDM mashups of Metallica and Bon Jovi. Over 100 decibels.

The good was Longhorn takeover of their stadium.

Rewatching the game now.

-I know it infuriates @BurntOrange&White but Michael Taaffe is going to play in the NFL.

-We probably lost about 50 rushing yards due to stupid holding penalties, several of which were iffy at best

-Pass pro was more of an issue than run blocking to the point above. Rough few weeks for Cam Williams.

-The 1H sack where a guy ran free between Conner and Majors was definitely on Jaydon Blue.

-This RB group has in the bottom half of the SEC. If a play is blocked for 4 yards, they get you 3 before tripping on a blade of grass. They also are guilty of contributing on a couple of the holding penalties where they needlessly ran around their blocking.

-Best game Trey Moore has played all year.

-Pavia’s first run went for 18 yards (TD). His next 15 carries went for 49 yards. Completely controlled his legs.

-Not going to the portal for a punter was egregious. We win this game by 17 if Ryan Sanborn is on this team.

-Warren Roberson needs to be removed from special teams until further notice. 3 penalties in the return game in 2 games.

Thanks. I'm glad that you recapped - I couldn't take watching us lose to Vanderbilt again. Once was enough. The good news is we are 6-2 going into Fayettenam against a very underwhelming Arkansas team. We should win handily.

Last thought here but that last Vandy TD drive was such classic prevent PK. Twice in that drive we asked our two edge rushers to sit back and spy??? Then on the Broughton targeting penalty it looks like he was trying to spy (backed up at the snap).

On the TD play they brought in Vasek for his only defensive snap of the game? Him being out there didn’t matter but just thought that was weird all the way around.

My theory is that Sark's offense scales with the run game.  When we run the ball, it opens everything up and we are unstoppable.  It was the same during his time at the Falcons.  At Bama, they always controlled the LOS and had RBs.

Well, it's possible that good Quinn shows up, too.  The unpredictable nature of Quinn Ewers is fucking everything and everyone up, including Sark.

We had bursts of good Quinn yesterday, but not good Quinn all through the game.  I thought after that first drive, he might have turned the corner.

Seems reasonable, yes.  Either the run game or hitting a couple of deep balls.

At the beginning of the year we seemed to have the deep ball play down and Ewers was hitting his receivers well enough.   The protection by the line was also better or opposing defenses hadn't yet figured out our offensive protection.   Cam Williams really looked like he had turned a corner from the beginning of the year, and now he is struggling at the position and our backs are missing blocks they should make.   Now, our QB is feeling significant pressure and not able to do what is asked of him.  So the issue goes back to the coaches to either adapt the protection so it isn't so obvious, adapt the design so our backs are not put into positions to make plays they cannot.   Adapt the offense so the QB can make the fucking plays.

Hire the SEC officials to watch the practices and figure out why we are not getting away with holding like everyone else even though we are seeing it.  Maybe they have specific instructions they need to learn on how it is called.  Same for OPI/DPI.

But I know fuck all.  I am just a stupid asshole fan from a series of tubes.

So we're losing to Florida?

(PS: we've won 7 games)

The whole we HAVE to hit the deep ball for the run game to work is such bush league garbage.  Football history is littered with teams who could pound the rock and hardly ever threw the ball at all much less threw it long.  Yes football is complementary and one thing can help the other but this whole throw the hands up and go "welp we have an offense that HAS to have the lowest probability of success play work for the most basic fundamental football plays to consistently work" is....I don't even know what it is.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't like to hit some deep balls.

"Good" Quinn at this point is completing a 5 yard pass to pre determined receiver based on the defensive look and that receiver makes the plays.  The "Good" Quinn that was elite against Bama hasn't been seen since that game.

Yeah but that only works if you have a really good defense and….ah shit.

As good as Sark is at designing an offense and play calling, the run game looks very predictable or at least not too varied, in terms of type of plays called.

Situationally there is good timing calling run plays when the defense isn’t expecting them, but imagination in the type of run plays seems lacking. You typically see 2 or 3 types of plays called to either side during a game. Seems like there is room to open the play book a bit more there.

the sheer number of times when we have short yardage and continue to do zero snap movement and run straight up the middle against a team that is murdering us in the middle of the line on runs is beyond infuriating.

Do some bootlegs to the wide side of the field, have the running back come in motion from one side or the other to get the ball at full speed running parallel to the LOS, have a fucking jet sweep with one of the hyper fast WR we have.

fuck.... stop running dead up the middle, get some damn movement going, and get the first down.... then fucking go back to running up the middle and get 1-6 yards on the next first down.

that being said, we had 1 time where we did that on 3rd down yest at the Vandy 43ish line... and it worked.... except Niblack got called for a fucking hold.   (and yes, that was a fucking hold he never released the defender)

The short, west coast passing game is becoming too predictable. They are not making teams pay for sitting on all the shallow routes.

Until Ewers shows he can beat defenses downfield or at least on medium depths throws, it’s going to be tough to move the ball against good defenses.

That's one thing that drove me crazy. I don't know how many times all 11 defenders were within 4 yards of the line of scrimmage. With our speed, that should never happen.

With that being said QE has a strong arm and threw the long ball effortlessly last year, not always on target but threw them none the less. The same. That's what makes me wonder if the oblique and shoulder injuries aren't still plaguing him to some extent.

I have to add some positivity in this thread. Taaffe was great. Roberson was excellent. He is a bad ass coming down and tackling in space. This will piss people off, but Gideon has done a great job with that room. Seems every time a new guy steps in they don’t miss a beat.

Moore played his best game as a Longhorn. Need to give some love to Kobe Black. Looks like he has ascended to the 3rd CB and his play on the field confirmed why. Love seeing the babies make plays

Quinn has only hit maybe a handful of deep balls including last year. His deep ball completion percentage is abysmal

I really would like to know what the rule is for blaring bullshit music and horns during play.  you should not be able to do it after the ball is spotted or the ref starts the 25 second clock.  It was totally ridiculous yesterday.

The SEC makes Miss State stop with the cowbells at some point when the opposing offense starts lining up. Seems like the same rule could/should be applied to Vanderbilt's canned noise.

the canned noise and horns is actually worse.  the varying volume levels and pitches in the music and then the stupid steamboat horn is way worse than a stable volume/pitch which your brain can actually help to filter out.

We should have a canned bevo noise for them next year and blare music and that right up to the snap.

I noticed we were using some cards on the sidelines so maybe we weren't using the comms as much but don't know.

Can't leave out Jelani McDonald's great physical effort.  Nice job by DT's in this game too.  Vandy was only 3 for 12 on 3rd down -- and several 3 and outs!!!
