Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has disclosed that the latest contract extension proposal his representatives presented to the team was significantly lower than Juan Soto's deal with the New York Mets, falling short of $600 million.

Negotiations between Guerrero and the Blue Jays to secure a contract extension before the start of spring training were unsuccessful, setting the stage for the 25-year-old to enter free agency in November.

In an interview with ESPN's Enrique Rojas and Ernesto Jerez, Guerrero clarified the details of the negotiation process and refuted claims that his salary expectations were comparable to the 15-year, $765 million contract the Mets awarded Soto during the offseason.

"It's much less than Soto. We're talking about many fewer millions than Soto, more than a hundred million less. ... It was the same number of years [as Soto's contract], but it didn't reach [$600 million]. The last number we gave them as a counteroffer didn't reach 600," Guerrero said.

"I know the business. I lowered the salary demands a bit, but I also lowered the number of years ... I'm looking for 14 [years]. I would like 14, 15, even 20 if they give them to me, but doing it the right way.

We used to go to Bat Day at Arlington Stadium every year.  Packed crowd, all the kids banging bats on the metal bleachers in the outfield...   One year they decided that was too much, and they handed out a coupon for a bat at the game, which completely sucked (even though we eventually got a better quality bat).

Baseball Prospectus’ PECOTA projections give the Rockies a 0.0% chance to reach the postseason with a predicted win total of 55.5 games.

“I think it’s hilarious,” outfielder Zac Veen said when asked about those dire predictions. “I mean, when we look at each other, we know we are going to be good … pretty soon. I think the team is already good with the guys we already have on it and the (players) we have brought in.

“I think the younger guys just laugh at all of the stuff we read and all of that. I think we all know we are going to be good.”

And Veen wasn’t done.

“I think we have the best and most underrated team in the league,” he said. “I’m a baseball junky and I look at every team and everybody. I can confidently say that there are guys on this team that deserve way more credit than they get.”

Recent reports indicated that Derek Hill was pulling ahead of Dane Myers for the regular center field job, though Myers might now be utilized in right field with Sanchez out.  Griffin Conine and utilitymen Javier Sanoja and Eric Wagaman provide further depth on the grass, and Albert Almora Jr. is more of a veteran outfield option in camp on a minors contract.

The Twins suffered a potentially devastating blow today when third baseman Royce Lewis pulled up while running out a groundball and promptly exited the game. As relayed by Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Twins subsequently announced that the infielder had been diagnosed with a hamstring strain. The severity of the injury is currently unclear, but it seems likely that Lewis will miss at least some time with Opening Day less than two weeks away.
