🇺🇸 2024 Election Day 🇺🇸

Absolutely wild that a decrepit Biden runs a more competitive race than Kamala.  He still probably doesn’t win, but at least we aren’t going to bed tonight completely defeated.

Kamala is proving to be the worst Democrat candidate in quite some time. She was an atrocious candidate in 2020 and she never overcame those headwinds with a significant portion of the D coalition.

I hope in 2028 they focus less on capturing celebrity endorsements and more on the issues that drive voters to the polls.

The reality of this is that we are an axis country. We will aid Russia to ensure that they annex Ukraine by May. We will withdraw from NATO. We will reduce the power projection of our military to the point that the dollar loses just about all value and these debts that people have been bitching about for decades actually cause us to default. That's not even mentioning how bad things will be if you are lgbtq or look like you might be an illegal.

Kind of a hard pill to swallow as a person whose existence in this country hinges on the 13th, 14th and 15th amendment. There are tens of millions of my fellow countrymen who are ok with the authoritarianism, racism, misogyny of a useful fool who will gladly do the bidding of people who are still pissed about the 1960s Civil Rights legislation, Trump is their vessel. All I can say to any Black, non-Black POC, transgender, gay, women, etc that didn't vote for Trump, buckle up, and for those that did, buckle up.

How do you spend 30k a month on pills? Can this be a new topic for people to understand what went into arriving at that point

I don’t. I take one pill a day that keeps me alive. The insurance company makes sure I see “what they pay” for that pill to the producer of said pill. I don’t pick or control the price of any of this shit, I just take the fucking pill that the oncologist says will keep me alive. And this is the 5th one that I’ve been on, all while battling the fucking insurance company about which is the least costly to them.

That's a whole lot of fear mongering. I remember when Trump was going to launch nukes day 1 of his last term.

What's he going to do with all that unstoppable power, with no checks and balances? We invading Mexico? He's probably going to sell California to Putin, right?

200w.gif?cid=6c09b952g94kc1hh449nh8qc62c

It's not fear mongering.  There is a plan to remove all guard rails.  Nobody can stop it since SCOTUS pre-approved it.  He wants revenge against anyone he feels wronged him.  He wants to dismantle the free press, because they criticize him.  He will have the power to do it.  He's an impulsive, hedonistic narcissist.  There is no telling what whim gets him to do something crazy.  His DOJ leads did not allow him to pursue the worst of his desires to put his political enemies in jail or to shoot protestors, for example.  That won't be a problem for him anymore.  We are handing unchecked power to a person with the emotional maturity of a toddler and a severely declining metal state.  Shit is crazy.

We'll see with Putin. I think Russia prefers chaos and sees Trump as the more divisive, which is good for them. On the other hand, Putin obviously hasn't feared Biden or Obama when it comes to involvement in the Ukraine invasions.

Truth, farmers would get hit most hard probably if the labor dried up. For that reason GOP probably won't significantly penalize employers using illegal labor.

So, just so we're clear, a whole shit ton of people just voted the way they did because inflation/costs are too high, and their candidate is going to roll in with tariffs and promises of deporting what you'd agree is a pretty valuable workforce.

Leopards and faces and what not.

But I'm sure not sending our old military stock to Ukraine will offset those additional costs. Or something.

Joe Biden delayed what now seems inevitable. The American people did this to themselves. Trump didn't force anyone to vote for him.

America isn't a monolith, but it has lacked accountability and strong moral direction for a significant portion of my life. This is a sign of an eroded society incapable of accountability or collective goodwill. The American you live in isn't changing, the feeling you feel now is what brisket has been talking about. Trump is a symptom, he's not the disease. The American population is sick (unhealthy) and a lot of people thought defeating Trump in this election would turn the page and put things on the mend. After tonights result, even if a few hundred thousand people switched their votes and the outcome was different I don't believe for one second that it would heal America. There's something deeply wrong with a large majority of the country.

I just want be fair after clowning on you earlier - this is a good, insightful post.

This is really well said and the feeling I'll be left with after tonight. It's hard because we continue to have so much potential but not enough to stop the decay. Things are going to have to get truly bad and then hopefully a leader comes forward to rebuild. It's going to be a mess because through the courts and legislation, what Trump brings about will be extremely difficult to reverse and this electorate won't realize dismantling the modern state is the cause for their suffering. They didn't realize the creep that got us to this point. I very much fear the worst, plan to resist, but mostly plan to turn inward to my family and guarding the life I have.

America just proved that it doesn't actually give a flying fuck about issues. The economy was the number one stated concern, but economists were virtually unanimous that Harris's plan has more potential to reduce costs than Trump's incredibly short-sighted tariff nonsense. No one cares what experts say anymore. It's all feels and propaganda.

Very little of my concern about his presidency is about him personally. It’s about him not giving fuck about what the ghouls he’s told to put in power around him do while he goes golfing.

There are some jobs like in farming that Americans are too lazy to do, or the pay is so little they'll refuse to take the job. That should be a viable path to work visas and possible citizenship for people that will take those jobs.

Then you've got migrants shipped to Ohio that are receiving government assistance. Landlords have been kicking out poor white renters, fixing up their properties and renting them to said migrants. The migrants will then do the jobs the poor white people were willing to do, but for less. It's one thing to take jobs that no one here is willing to do, it's a bit different when we're importing cheaper labor and putting Americans on the street.

If Trump managed to barter or force an end to the war in Ukraine, with little or no involvement, would that be a positive or negative?

Economy + inherent racism/sexism.  We've seen that play out globally plenty in recent history.

Using the UK again as an example, how many economists explained over and over how Brexit would tank the economy?  Didn't matter.  People wanted an easy answer/target for why they didn't have enough money, which the Tories provided regarding immigrants taking jobs (sound familiar?) and tying up government resources.  Lots of people don't understand or don't want to take the time to understand complex economic issues.  Just give them something/someone to blame in 15 seconds or less before their attention span gives out.

To Trump's team's credit, I noted a couple of weeks ago that his TV ads down the stretch during every football game were actually really good (lies, but not so blatant and crazy, portraying strength, and zero of Trump actually speaking). Hers were just okay. A completely uninformed voter, seeing his and her ads side by side probably picks him. Might have helped shore up the late deciders.

The Ohio map was obviously hopium and a joke. I did think kamala had a credible path to both Georgia and NC and was not going to shit the bed in every single swing state.

There's a balance of keeping momentum and hype going and posting my actual thoughts. I think it's pretty clear when I get into serious poster mode because I tend to ygifs longcat things and use a different writing style.

There will be no soft landing anymore, economically, socially or politically. I just hope it doesn't happen all at once.

No, dipshit. Do you think anyone could afford to pay $30,000 a month for medication? Do you think if I was already paying that amount that I would be that concerned about the protections of preexisting conditions?

Yeah, for as much as people joked (or not really joked) about him dropping dead before the election, it's probably in the best interests of the nation that he lives through the next term instead of Vance/someone who cares about something other than self-enrichment being in charge.

Just to clarify the people you are talking to were asylum seekers who were granted asylum and had to supported a bit. This is all by international treaty. They were not imported labor.

And I am all for anything that keeps Americans off the street. I don't know if that also requires us to never give asylum to anybody.

But can we stop with the Trump wishcasting? He can do things and I can see those things and I can make my own judgements. I don't need you to spin some tale of Trump glory for me.

Ukraine is fucked. There will be a negotiated truce and then Putin will ignore it and overtake the country. A lot of people are going to suffer and freedom will be lost.
