It's not me the Democrats are trying to convince. They've got me. If what you're saying is true and the Democrats actually do care about working America and actually do help them, why, with all their billions and experts, are they so bad at convincing them?

Is there an answer that doesn't involve us inflating our own sense of self and superiority?

Right wing media and algorithms.

It's an issue the left and Democrats face as well, but not as extreme IMO.

My personal favorite is the whole "repeal obamacare" thing. The main reason that plans on the public market ended up being so expensive is because of all the capitulations that Obama's team had to make to the R's to get the thing passed, most notably the lack of a public option "because socialism." By not being willing to share the risk amongst all US citizens, R's ensured that those who needed coverage the most would be doomed to continue to pay rates set by the insurers, who are fucking FOR PROFIT companies.

Um, Joe Lieberman was not a Republican.

Maybe a better wage, or upwardly-mobile educational opportunities, perhaps expanded access to healthcare that won't bankrupt me, continued decreases in interest rates would all help me but ... inflation bad, need new president (let's just ignore that the fucking CAUSE of inflation is profit-taking and wealth-accumulation to the already-billionaires, and the tax plan for new president will just make that worse).

Fuck, I gotta stop.

Politically, Democrats have an elitism problem. They are seen as snobbish and out of touch. That's a problem of perception.

Democratic policies are actually very popular.

Let me get this straight: Americans were fed up with the increase in food prices, so they voted for the candidate who vowed to deport 50% or more of the farm workforce.  Good job, hope it works out for you!

His only stated economic policies are tariffs and deportation. We’re also due for significant federal spending cuts or at least a normal recession so… stagflation with Trump behind the wheel? Should be fun…

There is a theory, which I subscribe to, that American Hispanics are for the most part going to get absorbed into “White” in a similar way that all the White ethnics did.  It takes time and honestly only continual immigration has meant it isn’t noticed. But it’s happening.

Come down to Cameron and 290.

Ain't no white around here.

Huh? If they can vote, I don’t think they’re getting deported…

The electorate is not known for its brilliant cause-effect analysis.

Read up on Operation Wetback.  The criteria used to round people up and deport them looked a lot like this:

Trust a Stephen Miller-led white nationalist deportation effort at your peril.

After this election, if I was any sort of immigrant I wouldn't want to leave anything to chance, your papers better be unimpeachable because they will be asked for looking for any reason to get deported...

There is one and you already know it. I believe it’s referred to as a “conflict of interest.” So yeah they might pay lip service to the idea of helping the working class, but they’ve got corporate donors to think about too.

The list goes on and on.

Democrats need to get better at politics. It's really that simple.

Conversely, it's not going to be easy for Republicans to replace Donald Trump. He has turned out to be much more politically gifted than I expected.

They won't have to.  They're gonna 25 him at some point (or he'll die), Vance will take over and elections will be suspended.

Anyone with dark enough skin who isn't carrying an American passport on them at all times is going to be at risk of deportation. There's no due process in our immigration system and citizens already get deported fairly often. When they're trying to hit quotas like 15-20 million, they're going to be catching tons of citizens in that dragnet.

They won't be suspended, they'll just be so rigged that running a competitive opponent isn't functionally possible. See Hungary, Russia, Turkey, etc.

The common people are stupid and/or in a cult.  30 years of right wing  radio and news has finally culminated in an electorate this stupid and gullible Idiocracy has arrived. The common people want to be lied to, and to believe lies and to act hurtfully toward others.   The Democrats cannot turn that huge swath of absolute stupid trash into decent right thinking humans simply by telling them their non- hateful policy proposals.

And the common people avidly support nativist, racist homophobic dickheads - and absolutely buy-in on all the stupidest conspiracy theories that a slow child should be able to figure out.

How exactly do you propose not ‘looking down on them?’   I’d love to hear your theory, because looking down on nativist, racist, homophobic dickheads is what decent people are supposed to do.  At least when your efforts to educate them are defeated because they are dedicated to being ill informed haters who taking it as a matter of team and pride, never to look at a different opinion.  It’s their brand now.    You apparently want Democrats to reward that stupidity and deplorable behavior by agreeing with it.  Or pretending it is something that it is not.

But I will give your suggestion - that we try to understand the Klan members and not talk bad about them until we find common ground - (“O.K., we agree to disagree about the lynchings…”) and give it the attention it deserves.

Maybe by not talking about them like you just did?  That’s literally how those people think you view them and it’s obviously not wrong.  I’m from a small town and know a lot of Trump idiots that are working class.  They all feel the democrats look down at them and that is how it has come across the last few years.  They are not all what you described but sure some are.  You catch more flys with honey than swatting them.

where are my liberal fly rod anglers? we need to start fishing together. I'm not kidding. borrowing from the tried and true wisdom of the queer community, when times get tough you gotta spend time together, social relationships matter. the stronger they are, the better off we will all be.

A few thoughts.

The Dems "Big Tent" gives them a broad and diverse voting base, but it's clear that loudly progressing the platform of every demographic within that base does not resonate with those outside the tent. I thought it was absurd that the only ads Ted Cruz ran were about trans bullshit and "men playing in women's sports". I thought, "there's no way people really give a shit about this, right?" But boy was I wrong. They polled prospective voters and those voters said "we're tired of this shit." They knew what they were doing, and it worked. Identity Politics is a losing game. The path forward to protect and expand the rights for marginalized groups will probably require first obtaining a political mandate by gaining the public's trust on handling the meat-and-potatoes issues that do resonate with the broader electorate, and then passing legislation enshrining those rights for marginalized groups, even if the general public isn't necessarily comfortable with it. Dems need to stick to the meat and potatoes issues that resonate with voters and tune out the social issues that give middle America the ick. Jobs, economy, diplomacy. It sucks, but it's true.

My very real concerns about Trump's legislative and personal-retribution agenda are somewhat mitigated by the fact that he's too fucking lazy to do any real work, although spite is a great motivator. My concerns is who will be the person(s) setting and executing the legislative agenda. Donald Trump is not a fascist because of his political philosophy. Donald Trump has no philosophy. He's a political nihilist. (I mean, say what you will about the tenets of national socialism. At least it's an ethos) He will support anything that he believes is popular and will get people to vote for him. He's the very definition of a puppet. The question then becomes, who is he going to let put their hand up his ass and make him dance?

But he is a fascist in the sense that he believes the presidency gives him absolute authority. And his stacking of the Supreme Court and their ruling that the executive office is immune to prosecution only reaffirms that belief. How motivated will be to go after his enemies, and what will that look like? I truly don't know.

I'm also very nervous about diplomacy. This man is so unstable. It's terrifying that he could literally order a nuclear attack at any time. Also, hey Ukraine - you're fucked. You should probably start walking west if you live there.

As a straight white man, I try to reflect upon, appreciate and understand the incredible privilege with which I've been blessed. My life wasn't dramatically impacted by the first Trump presidency. And if my daughter were to need access to exercise what I believe is her right to get an abortion, we have the means to facilitate that. But I do feel for marginalized groups that will be affected by those setting the legislative agenda. Buckle up buttercup. It's gonna be a terrible fucking ride. It'll be like when those people boarded an architectural boat tour in Chicago on August 8th 2004 only to have Dave Matthews Band's tour bus dump 800 pounds of human waste all over them as the bus passed over the Kinzie Street bridge.

Well stated.

I am worried about Project 2025.  Parts of it are coming, whether Trump really knows it or not.  The question is going to be how much.

I'm not sure about this.  I do think, we can all agree, that Trump should increase the number of Supreme Court justices.  What was the number y'all were suggesting again?

No one believes Republicans are getting rid of SS/Medicare.  Paul Ryan isn't walking through that door.  They've been around long enough that no one credits today's Dems either.  Hell, the last big expansion was under W.

you forgot to explain how to not look down on racists when they are doing and supporting racist things.    I think you’re asking us  to be more tolerant of racists and not look down on them, but I’m not sure exactly how to do that.   “Deport all the Haitians, even the US citizens?……Lord knows Cletus, I’m not trying to be negative here, but some people are saying it would be better not to deport US citizens who completed all the requirements of immigration.   Yes, I know they’re black…”

More information would be appreciated.
