I don't know.  I don't dislike government.  In fact I think government has a vital role in setting the rules of the game.  That said, I think that governments tend to overstep that role.

Perfect world:

  • Government provides common defense ...not "national interests", but legit, if we face aggression at home, we defend ourselves.
  • Government provides infrastructure (inclusive of utilities)
  • Government provides healthcare
  • Government provides education
  • Government provides regulatory environment
  • Government protects the borders and issues visas
  • Government sets tax rates
  • Government sets basic laws that 99% of sane people can agree on (IE no killing other people, no stealing from people, No diddling kids, etc)

Then...

  • Government stays the fuck out of my life

Sooooo what Democrats have been preaching for decades?

Ironically, a bunch of Christofascist, mostly Catholic, assholes has co-opted the term "common good" for a scheme that achieves just that -- provided you think common good is defined by a bunch of Christofascist assholes.

I'm sure you're quite aware of this, but posted for those who aren't.  IconoMacklemore is a cheerleader for this.

All of the arguments we have boil down to what it means to infringe upon rights and whose rights are favored.  An example that isn’t politically loaded:

1. Surely you would say that I have a right to enjoy German polka music. In fact, I have a right to enjoy German polka music at any time I prefer. And I should be able to listen at any volume I prefer.

2. But maybe you live next door and want to have the right to not listen to blaring German polka at all hours of the night.  And you can’t do that during my Wednesday night German polka rave.

Neither one of us are morally wrong. Both of us have legitimate claims to be exercising our rights.  We are going to have to introduce a referee with the power to enforce standards and compromises.

We can do this the normal way, with a government. Or the stupid libertarian way which will end with us arming an HOA and claiming it’s not a government because we don’t call it that.

Yes, once the German Polka Music reaches my ears you are violating my rights.

But having a volume, or time rule is different from saying you can't ever listen to German Polka in your home at a level that doesn't reach my house.

Just as if I use drugs in my house, it's none of your business, but if I use drugs in my house then come bang on your door at 4am, while high, is a violation of your rights.

What if you use drugs, overdose, and then take advantage of that government provided healthcare?

Their messaging has definitely shifted that direction in the past 10-15 years, but the proof hasn't shown up in the pudding when they've been in office.  Frankly, I don't trust either political party to actually change the status quo.

Too much money at stake.

Why shouldn't I?  I've paid my taxes just like the idiot gun owner who accidentally shoots himself in the foot while cleaning his gun.

Congrats, you are not a libertarian and you are here with normal people having a pragmatic discussion on how to use politics and compromise to balance citizens’ competing rights and interests while ensuring the protection of core civil and human rights against majority overreach.  We call that being a Liberal.

Yeah, basically I just don't like paying taxes for imperialism, and a never-ending drug war.

Let me rephrase, what if you don't make enough money to owe taxes?

That's a different topic in my mind.  There shouldn't be people who are able to work yet can't make enough to pay taxes.  That falls under the "regulatory" responsibility of the government.  I believe in a maximum wage.

Those who can't work, should be taken care of by the state.  IMO, our homeless problem can be largely attributed to lack of funding for mental institutions, and income disparity.  Both of which would be taken care of in Dixon's Republic.

I mean, not a shock at this point but lmfao they took the Constitution off of the Whitehouse.gov page

Does it say "Not Applicable" now?

Y'all lawyers don't even believe in the underlying principles of your own profession. Ethics is a moving target based on who you are advocating for and little else. That is all quite clear. The projection of all that taints this board given the disproportionate representation here.

What are you so mad about? You don’t have to pretend that you care about things like morality and ethics anymore! That’s the whole point of voting for your boy!

It's fascinating to watch.

You insist that you're not a Trumper, while supporting/excusing him with more consistency than even many of the MAGAts I know.  That you fail to see it - or just deny it - is another layer of fascinating.

He's a gutless coward who doesn't have the strength to admit what he really wants because he knows it's disgraceful.

Trump’s plan for the next four years is to do everything he can to be at the top of this list. He will grift, con, and steal from his position of power to try to make this happen. He’ll probably fail, but not for a lack of trying.

Of the 7 richest people in the world, 5 were in attendance for the Inauguration. Why exactly?

As Brian Taylor Cohen said about her, she has some massive cojones. She spoke eloquently and courageously, surely knowing the eyes of the world would be on her after that.

In one of his first moves as president yesterday, Trump had the official portrait of Milley removed from the hall in the Pentagon where portraits of all previous chairs of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are displayed—all, now, except Milley.

This dolt Trump reaches new lows as a weak kneed pussy every damn day.
