I was thinking about how suddenly the news shifted from all sorts of world and national events to just one person. My informal survey is to check AP, Reuters, and BBC and count headlines. There’s been an overwhelming shift in focus, even though so much of the focus is on the profoundly asinine.

Then I see the trolling here and consider how the campaign was largely a meme and trolling campaign, powered by rage and attention.

Then we see the new presidential photo that looks just like Vigo the Carpathian. We used to live in Idiocracy, but we may have jumped over to Ghost Busters 2.

There may be literal slime building up under DC. How long until the Ulysses S. Grant monument comes to life and starts trampling people? Can we organize a 24-day singing of Auld Lang Syne in front of the White House?

My recommendation is to stay informed of actual events, advocate where you can, but to stop feeding the rage monster. It’s not just unhealthy for you, it’s his super power and provides his movement energy.

If you claim Christ and are supporting this filth, prayerfully search the Bible to see what it says about the hot button issues of the day. Maybe start with Deut. 24 and 27; it’s pretty explicit and applicable. Or maybe just read the book of James and think about how we should interact.

So is JD Vance the Janosz Poha of this story?  Or Mike Johnson maybe?  And then who is Rick Moranis?  God damn Ghostbusters 2 is underrated.

Hey look, have it your way. They are mostly all just sound bites targeting people with short attention spans. I understand it resonates for many here.

That's a problem for both of them and the other similar platforms.

Nonetheless, one has a lot more bullshit on it than the other.

I agree that people should check sources.

I just cite the last thing I agree with on Surly. Is that good enough?

Right. Look, most of the posters here are well educated lawyers, physicians, operators, other professionals, etc. We should collectively be able to digest and discuss original source material. A lot of the material that serves as the basis for discussion and reaction here has instead been heavily processed and is just intended to reflect particular perspectives and bias. I assume that the training we all get at an elite institution like UT was not that very dissimilar across disciplines in this regard, and that these should not be foreign concepts to most of us.

I tried to read through the EO's. They're certifiably insane.

Welcome to Trump 2.0 where Stephen Miller will take his campaign to inflict harm on the people he hates to a whole new level.

Can someone explain to me - as if I'm a child, mind you - how we got to a place where the incoming POTUS can just kill legislation passed by the House and Senate and signed by a sitting POTUS with a simple, quick EO?

Was it always like this & I just didn't know, and previous presidents just didn't abuse it like Trump ... or what?

No.  One of the things he's doing is setting up a constitutional challenge to the Impoundment Control Act, which limits the ability of POTUS to impound or restrict use of funds authorized by Congress.

This administration is going to spend an unprecedented amount of time in court.

So sneezing, pooping, and menstruation are illegal too?

Along with spitting, sweating, coughing, breathing, pronouncing the letters D, T, K, G, and S (among potentially several others), sharting, and farting...
probably.

You sneeze, poop and menstrate semen?

Kinky.

“unlawful for a person to discharge genetic material without the intent to fertilize an embryo”

Doesn’t say anything about semen in that quote.  You discharge “genetic material” every time you breathe for instance.

You know? Come to think of it, this law might not be half-bad. I mean, it sure would solve a lot of that state's problems they made it against the law to breathe.

As a lifelong atheist, I'm a little confused. Every religious person I know loves Trump and has voted for him at least once (at least, every religious person I know well enough to talk about this shit. Maybe Gary at the office is super religious and hates Trump, I don't know). Meanwhile, the non-religious people I know all fucking hate him.

As you said, if you tried to construct an Antichrist from scratch, you wouldn't need to make any changes to Dotard. He checks every box. And they love him. Hell, they used to accuse Obama of being the Antichrist because he ate mustard or something. Make it make sense.

The only good news about this is I hate spiders, the webs, the tiny spider shit stains, the potentially dangerous bites.  I kinda feel better having Stephen Miller out on that wall. Not having consensual sex with humanoid life forms, and just snacking on spiders. Stay hungry my friend! Smuggle a few for later in your tighty whites.  You look great bro! Totally normal. High fives; but not too hard to protect your delicate wrist; and the spiders.

A bit more clarity on the refugee. EO.

1- More than just afghans.

2- Afghans in transit stuck at US sponsored sites

3- If in the US can continue to receive benefits.

4- SIV (Afghan allies) are exempt.

This is per CNN. Highlights. URL included so Ana does not have a conniption.

Approximately 10,000 refugees had travel booked, which is now canceled, according to a source familiar with the data. A breakdown by country was not immediately available, but refugees generally come from a range of countries, including Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Venezuela, Syria and Burma.

The cancellations could be particularly troubling for refugees whose medical exams or security checks, for example, are on the cusp of expiring. The memo also states that case processing is suspended, effectively shuttering the program.

“It is not clear what is going to happen to those individuals,” the official said. “They could be stuck there, we don’t know for how long.”

There are more than 1,000 Afghan refugees in Doha, the official said, and several thousand, up to as many as 10,000, in Pakistan. But there are other Afghan refugees in “many, many countries around the world … whose cases will now just be stopped,” the official said.

Special Immigrant Visa holders, which includes those who worked for the US abroad, are exempt. They can travel to the United States, according to the memo. Those refugees who are already in the United States can also continue to receive services.

I must admire their strategy of massive attack at lightning speed.

As with Trump's first administration which just kept flooding us with lies and damage which the media and electorate could not keep up, this is a move to overwhelm with a dark awe. Better count on confusion than seek forgiveness. Trump has always done the former and never the latter.

Any casual supporters of mere tolerance of those not white, publicly heterosexual, and sexually non-binary will move on in a few weeks if most of them haven't already. Same with witchdoctors replacing science, the rapid decline of goodwill between the US and other countries, and...oh, the seizure of government!

Every EO is accomplished upon signature in the dull minds of his followers. "He made a exa-cutive order stop inflation. Biden didn't do that!"

Game, set, match.

According to the Associated Press, the Spanish language pages also have been removed (SIAP) with the explanation that the website was being "tweaked/updated/insert bullshit here" and would eventually return--a removal that also occurred in 2017 with a similar explanation but the pages were only restored in 2021 under former president Biden. (also according the the AP--no linky because fuck it--some Hispanic voters for Trump are now experiencing the awareness that...well do I need to move this part of the post to the LEPF thread?)
