Yep it’s a fucking shame that’s even a possibility. But pain needs to be felt for people to wake up out of this fucking daze. Or it’ll happen with nary a peep from an exhausted populace further entrenching authoritarian rule. Can’t wait to see which!

I wish it affected the Rogan bros in college more than it will.

Clearly Trump's renaming of the Gulf of Mexico was petty, and meant to invoke US dominance, but TBH, Gulf of America is a more accurate descriptor for this body of water because it is literally surrounded by South America, Central America, and North America.

That said, fuck it.  It will always be the Gulf of Mexico to me.

It wasn't named after country Mexico. It was named after the people that lived in Mexico well before North, South and Central America was "discovered" by Europeans.

Just sitting here listening to AOC's last IG post to talk about week 1 of the new admin and what's going on. Clearly/explicitly, in laymen's terms, and discussing what the implications for these EO's are and what we should do. Explaining how the oligarchy is upon us and who is involved. But we live in a country that doesn't want to listen to an educated woman. Especially a 30-something Latina from a working-class background. Because it makes them feel insecure that they aren't nearly as intelligent as her. They want to listen to billionaires who have spent their entire lives enriching themselves, like their daddies before them did, and convince themselves that they are on the people's side.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this other than realizing that some people are saying things, but they might seem "maddeningly" silent because they are being silenced. The media is complicit. This is aside from the fact that people were told BEFORE the election exactly what would happen, and frankly, too many people didn't give one shit. What is more noise going to do? The tree is falling in the forest.

spot on. it's infuriating.

After listening to Trump’s  “young and attractive” press secretary, at her first press conference, it was easy to see why he likes her…besides her looks.  She took every opportunity to blame and demean the previous administration.   She was sharp, but made defamatory disparaging belittling degrading sarcastic and unflattering comments about all things Biden, California, and Dems. policies , egg prices….inflation.  She was like an aggy doing the Horn’s down sign after answering each question.  I was waiting on her to spike the mike when she finished.

From Britannica.com:

The name Gulf of Mexico has been applied to the body of water since at least the late 16th century. English geographer Richard Hakluyt referred to the “Gulfe of Mexico” in The Principall Navigations, Voiages and Discoveries of the English Nation (1589). That same year, Italian cartographer Baptista Boazio produced a map of Sir Francis Drake’s 1585–86 naval campaign against Spanish colonial holdings in the Americas. Boazio depicted Drake’s fleet skirting the edge of the “Baye of Mexico.” Other names, including the “Gulf of New Spain” and the “Florida Sea,” appeared on maps and in publications over subsequent centuries.

So, we're just renaming something that historically has had its name for...nearly 500 years because why?

If I worked in DEI for an organization who receives money from the federal govt, I would be working to transfer to a non DEI dept yesterday. It’s obvious that defunding DEI will be a requirement to receive those funds.

We were hosting friends this weekend that were in town visiting from out of state. The wife is a grant writer in higher education and she said she has spent the last two weeks doing nothing but scrubbing all references to DEI in their grant applications.

In all the coverage over the silliness of renaming the Gulf of Mexico, has anyone seen any estimates on what this will ultimately cost taxpayers and businesses to make the change?

I mean, we're talking about:

  • Printed materials, including maps, atlases, and textbooks
  • Swapping out names in any legal documents
  • Federal, state, and local signage changes
  • Statues, monuments, etc.
  • Other digital/online changes

Yeah but what price can you put on American Exceptionalism? I mean the giant body of water that's out there is ours. We claim it. It's our manifest destiny.

I think what someone said upthread about drilling rights to the Gulf is the real reason for this.

Shit man, we meet up at Andy's Frozen Custard, get high on hot fudge, and then go kick some Garland ass, pendejo!

Fuck that shit.  I grew up on the other side of the tracks (literally) ...Royal/Greenville area, and I haven't been anywhere near Walnut Hill/Audelia since my buddy got shot over there in the early 90's.  I don't imagine it's gotten any better over there since then.

Never in my 72 years have I wanted to slap the fuck off someone's face more than this Okie bureaucrat.
