We secretly have a LOT of racists in this country. Clinton's "tough on crime" stance, and southern beginnings comforted them. Biden also won for a lot of the same reasons. The olds remembered the 94 crime bill fondly and how he spoke about minorities back in the old days so they were okay with him.

i’m old. So I know lots of old people. And I talk to lots of old people.  Since 2020 I have not had a single conversation with, nor heard other old people talking about the 1994 Crime Bill being a reason why they voted for Biden in 2020.

At this point, you are just making shit up.   In 2020 most of the old people I know who voted for Biden did so because voting for Trump was so fucking stupid - Trump having repeatedly displayed his stupidity, immaturity, ignorance, incompetence, and illegality.

Interesting. Explain how that works.

Essentially, Tesla receives credits from various governments around the world for producing zero emission vehicles.  They in turn sell these credits to Ford, GM, etc so they can use them to offset F-250's, Hellcats, etc.

https://www.globalfleet.com/en/manufacturers/global/analysis/teslas-dominance-over-carbon-credit-market-explained?t[0]=Tesla&t[1]=Electrification&curl=1

Quote

Also known as a carbon emissions credit, the price of carbon credit differs according to geography and under different emission standards. For instance, the carbon emission standard in the European Union (EU) was 130 gr CO2/km between 2015 and 2019, with €95 for each excessive gram of emissions. Suppose the newly sold EV has a lower carbon emission than the EU standard. In that case, the deficit equals carbon emissions credit, which could be sold to manufacturers who could not meet the emission standard.

Quote

The carbon credit market helps auto manufacturers offset carbon emissions by developing carbon reduction technologies, primarily renewable energy production. Renewable energy investment is crucial as the manufacturing process of EVs today still heavily depends on energy from fossil fuels, which are responsible for a large sum of emissions.

Buying carbon credits helps automakers comply with regulations and continue their investments in electrification to benefit from these credits. But like Ford and GM, are all automakers able to focus on greener technologies in the space offered by carbon credits, or is it just buying time with no progress?

If those same old people who voted for Biden " because voting for Trump was so fucking stupid" voted for Harris, then you and I wouldn't be having this conversation would we?

Gotcha. That is quite a nice little deal. But that is how the credits are designed to be used right? How lucrative is that for Tesla?

Because Tesla receives so many of them.  And I don't how the selling of the credits works, but I suspect Tesla can name the price:

https://carboncredits.com/teslas-carbon-credit-revenue-soars-to-2-76-billion-amid-profit-drop/#:~:text=More impressively%2C the company's total,struggle to meet regulatory targets.

Quote

More impressively, the company's total carbon credit revenue for 2024 surged to $2.76 billion, marking a 54% year-over-year increase from $1.79 billion in 2023. This substantial boost underscores the ongoing demand for emissions credits as legacy automakers struggle to meet regulatory targets.

Quote

Since 2017, Tesla’s total earnings from these transactions have soared to over $10.4 billion. It has become one of the most lucrative aspects of its business.

This revenue comes at a minimal cost to Tesla, making it a near-pure profit stream. Unlike other automakers that must purchase credits to comply with emissions regulations, Tesla generates them simply by selling zero-emission vehicles.

Huh? Clinton was a direct response to the Dems getting mollywhopped in 3 straight elections. They decided to run the most conservative Dem they could. Had shit to do with progressives and everything to do with countering the R's to pull their base over. Clinton is the reason for the shift to the right across the spectrum.

We secretly have a LOT of racists in this country. Clinton's "tough on crime" stance, and southern beginnings comforted them. Biden also won for a lot of the same reasons. Clinton signed NAFTA. Glass-Steagal Reform. Brokered the WTO Treaty with China. Pushed Fanny and Freddy. For all the righting the budget in the 90's, they shift to the right and penning of some awful bills wasn't worth it.

Clinton was a more centrist candidate. And being tough on crime can be appealing to centrists.  Just because a person supports being tough on crime does not mean a person is racist. The bolder portion of your post is horseshit. Your perspective on that past period and the Biden election is a very biased perspective that simply isn’t fully factual.

How money did Trump's companies and his family make from the Covid funding? Not a fucking word was mentioned about government spending then. Not a mention about it now.

Fuck these hypocritical fuckheads.

That is a pretty crazy amount of money for doing nothing. Modern business!

But in the context of how much Musk is worth isn't much.

musk owned 12% of paypal and eceived $176M when it was sold to ebay in 02

the falcon 9's first successful booster landing was 21 december 2015 just over 9 years ago

in 2015 musk was in a 3-way tie for #100 on the global list of billionaires ($12B)

i have never been in the dt elon thread so i don't know if the above has been covered

The Clintons were "progressive" as reflected in the lens of Reagan and Bush.  That's it.

That counts, considering how much of the Reagan coalition he peeled out, especially in 96.

The pilots union is taking a hard line at not having to fly upside down.

Thanks, Biff. I recall it being mentioned in passing back in college. Glad to see the explanation. Solid quote from article:

Quote

The word anacyclosis has been variously translated as “the cycle of political revolution” and “the cycle of the constitutions.” In short, the theory states that the six regime archetypes that the Greeks identified and which we still use today (monarchy, tyranny, aristocracy, oligarchy, democracy, and ochlocracy or mob-rule) each represent different stages of one long process of political evolution. There is good reason to think that Polybius and his predecessors arrived at this theory empirically. After observing the rise and fall of many hundreds of city-states, most of which cycled through several of the governmental forms mentioned above, Greek political thinkers concluded that these transitions from one form to another were not random. Rather, they seemed to follow simple and recognizable patterns. For example, tyrants were frequently overthrown by groups of aristocrats, while popular revolutions frequently overthrew oligarchies and ushered in democratic rule. Interestingly, the reverse of these trends (aristocracies being overthrown by tyrants or democracies turning into oligarchies) were statistically less likely to occur.

Bingo!

Thank you for posting the carbon credit info.

I've been talking about this for a long time to friends and acquaintances whenever I hear them laud Elon and Tesla.

It's especially relevant now that all these Elon incels are breaking shit right and left under the guise of "dEeP stATe" bullshit and only have the ability to do so because of Elon's massive wealth, which (as I've argued many times) is inextricably linked to TSLA stock which is wholly dependent upon these passive income carbon credits, all of which would not exist but for the Deep State's Clean Air Act and regulation by the EPA.

Want to get fucking pissed off?  A 12-year-old adopted girl in Ohio, a relative of JD Vance, may die because she has two heart defects, the heart transplant hospital requires all patients be vaccinated, and her parents refuse to get the vaccinations because it conflicts with their religious beliefs. She is now in heart failure.  “My heart's getting sick,” Adaline Deal told Local 12. “I get tired. My legs get [too] tired to stand.”  Her parents, who are both members of a non-denominational Christian church, said that the vaccines conflict with their religious and medical beliefs and that they would not be willing to inoculate their daughter. The couple has broadcast both their faith and vaccine skepticism in posts on their Facebook pages.

“The heart failure team told me they won’t put her on the list unless we give her the Covid shot and the flu shot. I was like u would let her die if I refuse,” the mom wrote in a Facebook post on January 27. “That’s their policy she said. How nuts is that!”

Of course, there's always a crowdfund:  In the meantime, the Deals have crowdfunded more than $58,000 of their $100,000 goal after setting up a GoFundMe page to help pay for the transplant.

If they get to $100,000, that's going to be a pretty good down payment on a sweet new home.
