'Interrupted by boos': GOP lawmaker confronted by 'angry crowd' in 'deep red' Texas county

Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) was met with chants of "do your job" at a town hall on Saturday.

Self is just the latest to receive such treatment, coming the same day as Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) was called a coward as he departed the stage at a town hall in Kansas over the weekend where he was asked about how federal cuts are harming veterans.

Democratic insider Aaron Fritschner posted a video from Self’s town hall in Wylie, Texas, over the weekend, adding, "Another large, angry crowd at a Republican town hall in a deep red district."

Part of Self's interaction was also posted publicly by The Tennessee Holler, and shared by non-profit newsroom Texas Signal.

"In North Texas Congressman Keith Self is having a hard time selling Elon Musk's cuts and layoffs," the Signal wrote.

In local reporting, the Princeton Herald reported that Self was "often interrupted by boos."

Local Republicans, on the other hand, took to social media to complain about the protestors.

"This morning, Congressman Keith Self hosted a town hall to connect with constituents, but unfortunately, many Democrats showed up only to cause disruptions. We’ve seen multiple videos where, instead of engaging in meaningful discussion, protesters resorted to shouting over his responses," they wrote. "This behavior is unfair to the many residents who attended to learn more about the issues that impact our community. Now more than ever, we must stand together!"

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The nation’s capital is reeling from the Oval Office brawl heard round the world but, somewhere, Vladmir Putin’s smiling, according to a former intelligence official.

After President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance tag-teamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on live TV using Russian disinformation as their talking points, it’s become evident that this new White House is compromised, some onlookers suggested.

“The enemy is on the inside,” former Republican Virginia Congressman Denver Riggleman told Raw Story. “There’s so much fear, but we need to overcome that fear now, and the rational, the sane — those who care more about this country than securing mineral rights for their oligarch friends — might be the way we need to go now. This is America. This isn't Russia lite.”

But with Trump’s aides booting Ukranians from the White House grounds after Vance and Trump piled on Zelensky, critics fear the president is being played by propaganda

With tech billionaire and X owner Elon Musk working inside the White House, disinformation is now regularly flowing from the Oval Office, Riggleman said.

“What's happened is that we have such a disinformation and propaganda landscape based on social media and far-right alternative media that there's no way for us to understand how integrated lies are into our policy making,” he said.

What’s so dizzying to Riggleman — an Air Force veteran who went on to be a National Security Agency contractor — is that Ukraine, formally at least, remains an ally, while Russia is, formally, a foe.

After today’s White House meeting blew up, Riggleman says it’s obvious Trump and Vance are going out of their way to appease the Russian strongman.

“They're specifically trying to make Putin happy. It's interesting that the most powerful country in the world is bending the knee to a bare-chested b— horse rider,” Riggleman said. “This is absolutely unconscionable, and, because of his insanity, he should be removed on the 25th Amendment.”

The exchange makes Riggleman glad he left the Republican Party, but he also thinks it might break some of MAGA’s grip on some of his former GOP colleagues.

“All of the Republican Congress are cowards and lapdogs, because they value the power of their seat more than the future of this great country,” Riggleman said. “Trump has overplayed his hand for the first time for real when you're talking about what's happening with Ukraine and Russia, and I believe this might break the dam of those who have allowed ignorance and hubris to rule their decision making.”

America’s now on the wrong side, he said.

“It's not just a realignment of interest, it means we've become the baddies,” Riggleman said. “Really, what it comes down to is that, as somebody who is a former Republican, I never thought there would be a day where a Republican administration messages to Russia for their favorable assessment of us. I find it appalling. I find it disgusting.”

This episode is likely to rankle many Trump supporters, Riggleman predicts, especially veterans and active duty servicemembers.

“For people who fought for this country in so many different ways — real veterans that haven't been radicalized by insanity and conspiracy theories — right now, you're going to see a mobilization of the sane, I think, in a way you've never seen in foreign policy and things of that nature,” Riggleman said.

With the Democratic Party so weak and beleaguered these days, Riggleman thinks this latest Oval Office fight showcases the need for a new, viable third party.

“It’s almost like we have the crazy and the coward party, and I think we now need to understand and we need to build a third way,” Riggleman told Raw Story. “I just don't see how a two-party system survives in a social media, data-manipulated ecosystem.”

Sounds like wish casting.

Chalk this up in the "I'll believe it when I see it category".  I can't count the number of red lines in the sand that Trump has crossed, and he hasn't lost any meaningful support.

Why would this be any different?

They loooooove to show those national precinct maps that are 90% red because of all the rural voting and claim the country is very Republican. Yet they can’t make the connection that slashing the government is going to adversely affect them in similar proportion.
I guess it’s because they’ve been fed the idea that gvt “mooching” only happens in rural areas by lazy and entitled minorities?  Despite most of them being on some level of federal program themselves.

Land doesn’t vote, but land does get government subsidies.

We don't have time to wait for elections.

The only ones who can stop this are current government employees.  Either military or civilian.

The coup needs to happen from the inside.

Van Orden is a famous piece of shit even for a GOP rep.

Quote

He called the pages “jackasses” and “pieces of s---,” according to a transcript written issued by a page minutes after the incident and first reported by The Hill.

“Wake the f--- up you little s---s. What the f--- are you all doing? Get the f--- out of here. You are defiling the place,” the former Navy Seal shouted at the group.

The source told NBC News that Van Orden, 53, also said, “I don’t give a f---who you are. I’m a congressman. My name is Derrick Van Orden, and I represent the 3rd District of Wisconsin,” and he called the group “pieces of s---” multiple times.

The pages, who were 16 and 17 years old, were “visibly shaken,” according to the source.

Elon Musk just called for the United States to “leave NATO and the UN.”

If China and Russia took over the US government to destroy it from within, it’s hard to see what they would do differently from what Musk and Trump are doing right now.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/elon-musk-publicly-supports-call-084016959.html

"The news comes after several Republican lawmakers submitted a bill on the U.S. exit from the U.N., claiming that the organization does not align with the Trump administration's "America First" agenda."

Oh yeah? The U.N. isn't all "America First"? That's crazy.

Lynn 😧 Wondering what your take is on the Krasnov allegation (that Trump is a Russian operative who uses that name). Normally, I would dismiss it as another wild conspiracy, but the light of what's happening, it seems worth considering.

SK: Whether this particular allegation is true is irrelevant compared to the broader question of why nothing was done to prevent a known organized crime associate from gaining access to the highest level of political power. Twice.

Trump’s allegiance is to a transnational organized crime network in which the Kremlin is a key node. He has operated in this network for over half a century. His criminal ties are extensively documented in my book Hiding in Plain Sight, which contains hundreds of end notes to others’ work. Trump is a Kremlin asset: his activity benefits Russian officials and oligarchs and puts their interests before those of the US. This does not make him a secret agent or a spy. Trump is primarily a mafia associate, and it is through that lens that his rise should be examined.

Despite a surfeit of documentation, most pundits and politicians have been reluctant to pursue Trump’s Kremlin ties seriously because: 1) they do not want to follow the money trail, which leads to donors to both parties 2) Trump’s network includes US allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia 3) and ties to cases like Epstein/Maxwell that highlight lost US sovereignty and decades-long sadistic plots 4) and exposes many US officials, especially in the FBI, as corrupt accomplices. As a result, the focus has been on trivialities, like bot farms, or on rumors like this one. As I wrote in Hiding in Plain Sight, “No one could see the forest for the treason.”

I’m suspicious that the Krasnov story is bogus and is being spread as an attempt to delegitimize solid research on Trump’s ties to the Kremlin and its oligarchs. There are many concrete examples of Trump’s illicit activity that were meticulously documented but played down by media and never investigated by officials — some of whom turned out to be on the Kremlin oligarch payroll. Nothing about this crisis is new. The most important question is why every administration, most recently Biden’s, enabled it.

Spoiler

Katie G: I have recently become terrified that he will declare martial law. Do you see this as a likelihood? If so, how long do you think we have? His recent stunt with the military has me very concerned.

SK: It is hard to answer regarding a timeline: Trump and his backers move very fast. Yes, he may declare martial law. Right now, they are testing loyalty and purging possible opponents. There are no limits as to what he will do. When it comes to Trump, in any given scenario, think of the worst thing he could do and know it is the thing he likely will do. The reason: because he can. This is why it was essential to stop him early. I feel bad that I may be making your fear of martial law worse and that’s not my intent. I find it easier to deal with threats when I anticipate them and play them out in my head. But if that method doesn’t help you, don’t do it!

Spoiler

Mark S: Nancy Pelosi and Schumer have been toxic forces enabling billionaire power to coalesce and infect the Democratic Party for years. Pelosi handpicked the feckless Hakeem Jeffries to replace her and she sidelined the dynamic AOC from the Oversight Committee. Schumer seems to be going nowhere. Is there any sign the Democrats are rejecting the Pelosi/Schumer lock on Dems?

SK: Democratic voters are certainly rejecting it; you see it in the polls and hear it in the mass frustration over their inaction. The Democratic elite are trolling the public by tweeting as spectators while the nation burns. They refused to use their power to stop Trump over the past decades and they refuse to use it now. But the stupor of savior syndrome that has long gripped Democratic voters is slipping away. While it is sad that it is happening late, better late than never. There is no timeline on the truth. Unfortunately, there is a timeline on consequences.

Every official you named is an enabler of Trump’s network. If you examine their finances and foreign ties, you will find a great deal of overlap. The better folks grasp this, the better chance we have of saving our country — not saving a party or its corrupt leaders, but our country and their victims: the American people.

Spoiler

Thom R: What is the hold that Trump has over the Republicans? It has to be more than simply the threat of a primary. Do you think it involves threats of violence? It's a mystery to me what could be so frightening that this large group of people would forsake their country.

SK: Trump has leverage over the GOP due to 1) lifelong connections with organized crime and willingness to deploy violence 2) blackmail obtained long before 2016 via his mentor, mafia lawyer and GOP advisor Roy Cohn, and Cohn’s networks 3) blackmail and state secrets Trump obtained during his first term 4) court packing that creates the potential of legal consequences for anyone who challenges him 5) bribery and/or shared evil goals with the GOP, though for many this incentive fades over time when they realize they will never be more than a disposable hired hand. Many Republicans were lured by corrupt ambition, but they stay due to fear.

Spoiler

SK: I got this question from Jewish and Black readers in past Q&As. Every time I get it, my heart breaks. This is your partner’s country, and I am furious that she feels she has to flee it. As I said in past Q&As, I don’t give advice about moving, because that is a very personal decision. I’m also not confident that Canada will be safer in the long run. But yes, I am worried about violence against LGBTQ people. I also worry about legal repression, including the end of legal gay marriage and denial of healthcare and jobs. There is now a horrific backlash against LGBTQ people after what had been a great era of advances in civil rights. That said, there is a long and admirable tradition of LGBTQ activism that cannot be erased (no matter how hard this admin tries.) The history of LGBTQ activism offers many useful lessons for today, especially that of the Reagan era.

Once again, because your life is your personal business, my answer goes out more to people reading this than to you: stand up for those targeted. We are living in a time of incredible threat and pain, and no one deserves to feel alone, or like they will be abandoned out of political convenience. Let your LGBTQ friends and LGBTQ people in general know they are wanted and appreciated in America. This is a civil rights issue: an important one, and a straightforward one.
