I so want to say something here but discretion prevents it . . . ha!, discretion.  On surly.  What a world.

I was probably legit clinically depressed in the days/weeks after the election. This is going worse than I thought. Combined with no coherant resistance and Dotard’s still decent polls numbers….

I don't get your point, this is pre-Trump when I was in my mid 20s and didn't think about any real politics.

I was pretty despondent for a few days, then turned my political brain off for 3 months, figuring I would need the break before shit truly started hitting the fan after the inauguration.

I figured it would be horrible, way worse than the first time. Didn't think it would be this bad this quick.

Mike Judge made a documentary about America's future.

Matt Groenig predicted Trump's presidency and countless other developments.

and Trey Parker and Matt Stone foresaw war with Canada.

who knew 21st century life in the USA would be forecast by cartoons 😐

Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention during the election, but I don't really remember any talk of annexing Canada, making all our allies fucking hate us, switching sides and supporting the invading country over our democratic ally, shutting down entire agencies illegally, dismantling our government, generally making us way less safe everywhere across the board.....

So apparently Trump mentioned that he didn't like the treaty establishing the US-Canada Border and that he didn't like our shared water agreements when talking to the Canadian PM. This and Trump just casually talking about Canada being the 51st state and referring to the Canadian PM as a governor. He is clearly threatening to annex all, or part, of Canada and taking their resources.

Insanity. How is the media not giving him hell over this? They act like all Canada is mad about is the tariffs.

No I was assured that all my memories of chaos and insanity during his first term was wrong, and I should prepare myself for a peaceful and prosperous time.

Instead my concerns were clearly insufficient for the actual danger he posed.

TFG is slapping a 50% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum. He goes on to say he'll kill their (and our) auto industry, along with continued threats to annex a peaceful, sovereign neighbor.

Dumb question alert.

What cars do we import from Canada?  I wasn't aware the Canadians had any car brands of their own.  Are these American cars assembled in Canada, or am I missing something?

And aren't the tariffs Canada charges for dairy just part of the USMCA agreement Trump negotiated and signed with Canada just a few years ago?

It kept me away from here for a few months…and I’m still not engaged as much as I was, particularly in CR as I was closely tracking threads for news.  Had to stick my head in the sand because I knew it’d be bad

Tariffs work by taxing things crossing borders. Cars are assembled here in the US in Mexico, the US, and Canada with components and materials crossing borders multiple times. Hence the panic by the Auto industry over the tariffs.

The company whose brand is on the car is not the issue.

As evidenced by Japaneese makers also puckering right now.  Lotsa Toyotas/Lexus' coming from Canadia too.

It is in the sense that my point is that it would disproportionally hurt the American auto industry.  Those of us buying imports from Europe, Japan and S. Korea would be relatively unaffected.

We're basically cutting off our own nose to spite Canada.

Yeah that really is a dumb question.  But, you won’t have to ask it again. Lots of assembly and parts manufacturing in Mexico too.

ok maybe you still need some help. All Japanese makes aren’t made in Japan and shipped here. Same for Korean and euro. Many are made here, or other countries in North America. Many have parts fabricated in North America that go to the North American assembly plants.

this all worked great when we had free trade between us, Canada, and Mexico.  Now we do not.

Not really.  Almost 50% of US cars are imported from Japan, S. Korea, and Germany.  Versus 36% from Mexico and Canada

It actually was, I Googled it before posting, so already knew the answer but was playing dumb for the Trump effect.

I'm in the process of car shopping so this particular tariff hits home.

About that.  The aggregators have him recently going underwater again.  There won't be a rebound, it's all downhill from here until water finds its natural low 40s level.

Yeah he’s purposefully destroying our country and his “natural level” will be above Biden’s when he left office. That is the problem.

More to this point, in my effort to avoid actual work today, I took the liberty of identifying which cars are made in Mexico and Canada, along with their 2024 sales vs the total cars sold in the US.  So, if you're like me and looking to buy a new car, these should probably be avoided.

I won’t be aggregating this data, but if you want some homework I’ll insist that other automakers that have plants in the USA source parts, I’m thinking primarily stamped body pieces but maybe not, from fabricators in Mexico and Canada to use at their plants in say marysville OH for accords, San Antonio tx for tundras and sequoias, whichever makers that I can’t recall off hand that are in Alabama and other places.  Feel like proving or disproving my assertion?

That's even too deep a rabbit hole for me.  I've got my list narrowed to a few Toyotas.  Two are made in Japan (4Runner & Land Cruiser) and one in Indiana (Highlander).  Looked it up and there is a non-zero chance the Highlander sources some parts from Canada, so I'll keep an eye on that one.

Not sure I ever disagreed with your assertion, so you'll have to remind me what your assertion is.

There *might* be a lag in the price of used cars since they're not subject to tariffs. If I were you, I'd find a year old car in whatever model you want and see if you can get it around blue book before everyone realizes they can jack up their used vehicles by 30% as well.

Well, in usual every accusation is an admission fashion, Trump did try to label Biden a war machine and himself the Peace Time President. In Republican MAGA rhetoric that is translated to Trump will be a war machine and people will wish the Peace Time President Biden was still in the White House.
