I don't think people are overreacting, I think people are just reacting poorly and don't understand this is just the beginning. There is a difference, and we simply are not in the flood the streets and mass protest phase of this yet. Stuff has to play out some and already is to some degree.

As for the masses, I don’t disagree. Folks who understand are already taking to the streets. But, the political set, and also, and especially the courts, need to be on a war footing.

Yeah. Even a deranged Democrat is better than another ideological right wing nutcase being there.

But I have a feeling he won't last long in this office as he tries to get industry to go along with this stuff.

I do my best to avoid processed foods and would prefer everyone does as well, but I don't want the govt forcing companies to act how RFK Jr wants them to act.

Right. Which is why ultimately he will not last long in office.

I can't wait to meet Brisket.

You'd like him.  He'd consume MAGA with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse (due to all the gas station burritos.)

There is very little chance that RFK can create long lasting change in the food industry. Can he disrupt it temporarily? Sure but it will go back to where it is. And all of the chaos will come at a cost to the consumer.

I have no idea if food dyes are dangerous to long term health or not. Are food preservatives ok that allow food to last days, weeks or months longer than non-preserved food lasts? I can see the argument that they're not positive for your health but do we have solid evidence that they're harmful?

We have only 3 rangers in Yellowstone now. Thats over a million acres of park visited by over 4.5 million people a year and Trump is selling Telsa's in an effort to bail out Elon Musk.

It's okay.  Those 3 rangers got a pretty hefty pay raise, right?

y'all understand the end goal here, right? make the national parks inefficient and get people to care less about them so they can privatize the land. same with all these institutions. the goal is to ruin them to "prove" government doesn't work so they can roll everything into the private sector. if you look at what is going on right now through that lens, I guarantee things will start making more sense

Remember the outrage from the right when Michelle Obama recommended most fresh foods for kids, or NYC wanted to limit the sizes of cokes. Funny how quiet they are now.

The goal is to completely fuck up the National Parks then hand them over to private industry to “manage.”

The goal is to privatize everything.

They aren't even trying to hide it.

Thanks a lot, Reagan.

I don't know how he manages to be a putz and a schmuck at the same time, since that's usually not possible, but he's just breaking rules all over the place.

The man stretches the bounds of insulting yiddish.  That...is an impressive feat.  I mean, he's also a zorch (did I get that right?  Been a long time since I learned all the dirty yiddish terms).

Spoiler

Swapping Red Dye 40 for a natural alternative like carmine or beet juice in something like Hi-C or Skittles may seem like an improvement, but it doesn’t change the fact that these products remain ultra-processed, high in sugar, and devoid of meaningful nutrition. The real issue isn’t the dyes. It’s the overwhelming presence of highly processed, sugar-laden foods in our food system, making them cheap and accessible while healthier options remain out of reach for many.

If the goal is truly to improve health outcomes, then West Virginia’s leaders should be focusing on meaningful policy changes - expanding access to affordable healthcare, addressing economic disparities, improving food accessibility, and investing in public health programs that tackle the root causes of chronic disease. Instead, they’re choosing to pass performative bans that fail to address the real crisis at hand.

The Need for Smarter Public Health Priorities

This isn’t about being “pro” or “anti” food dye bans. It’s about not letting these performative gestures distract from the systemic changes we actually need. If lawmakers and public health advocates truly want to make a difference, the focus shouldn’t be on banning random ingredients that have been deemed safe by our regulatory agencies, as well as regulatory agencies around the world. It should be on comprehensive policies that tackle the root causes of poor nutrition and health disparities.

West Virginia, and every other state following this trend, has the opportunity to do something far more meaningful. But that would require challenging the industries and power structures that profit from keeping people unhealthy. And unfortunately, it’s much easier to sell the public on green juice.

Like Zores? or Tsores? Trouble?

He's definitely a paskudnyak.

To be fair, I picked up most of my Yiddish from my friends who were from Brookline when I was at Bates.  And that was a looooooong time ago, so it's pretty rusty.

1) Nobody rational would argue against the concept that we need to take a much more vigorous approach to the garbage that is processed foods.

2) Except we have to exclude from group 1) the entire Republican party, which flipped the fuck out when Michelle Obama suggested eating more vegetables as "COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT CONTROL!"

The GQP and anyone in it has NEGATIVE credibility or standing on this issue.  BELOW ZERO.  Fuck their hypocritical asses with a pitchfork coated in Red Dye No. 5.
