Yes, the blind, black KKK leader chapped my hide. My stomach turned. But, at least the context was clear.

Just FYI.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of seeking a third term in the White House, which is prohibited by the Constitution under the 22nd Amendment, saying in an exclusive interview with NBC News that there were methods for doing so and clarifying that he was “not joking.”

“A lot of people want me to do it,” Trump said in a Sunday-morning phone call with NBC News, referring to his allies. “But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”

“I’m focused on the current,” Trump added, in some of his most extensive comments to date about serving a third term.

Yeah, no.  I'm not saying he won't move to suspend the next election and stay in office indefinitely, but there are exactly zero methods for Donald Trump to be elected to a 3rd term.  However, Americans are idiots.

Not what I said at all.  He can't be elected a 3rd time.  He can try to extend his 2nd term.

He didn’t say he’d be elected.

People need to take this seriously, he didn’t leave voluntarily the first time and his verbiage is a direct output of his brain.

Not to be too negative, but the US existing in its current form in 2028 seems a little optimistic to me right now. What that would mean for Trump running again, or elections in general, I have no idea.

Basically going to treat the next “election” as one of his CC Golf titles where he just declares himself the winner.

The way, apparently, would be to run as VP to someone who wins the Presidential election and abdicates/resigns.

Don't get me wrong, I fully expect Trump to exploit every possible way to stay in office, but I don't see a clear violation of the Constitution as one of those paths.

Now, if he renders the Constitution moot by fiat or something, sure, but we're only a couple of years away, and while I know SCOTUS is in the bag I think even Donkey Dong Bret and Barbie Catholic would be loathe to scrap the entire document, among other justices.

We'll see.  All I'm saying is that it would be a highly unlikely "election".  I think it's far more likely he just gets SCOTUS and Congress to go along with some sort of emergency resolution that postpones elections (indefinitely).  Same effect.

The 22nd amendment does not say Trump is ineligible to be POTUS. It says he’s ineligible to be elected at POTUS.

Thats a big loophole for the 12th.

The constitution also says a presidential election must be held every 4 years.

The only “loophole” is canceling elections by declaring martial law.

No, what I mean is that the 12th is what @jimmyjazz is citing about being VP.

12th: No one ineligible to BE president can be VP.

22nd: No POTUS can be ELECTED to a third term.

Two different things. The Constitution only requires you to be over 35 and natural born citizen to BE president. And you can become President without being elected.

2028: Vance selects Trump as VP, explicitly promises to step aside and let DJT take office.

This is constitutionally murky but there is an argument.

I’ve always maintained that we aren’t having midterm elections because of some emergency he will create and use to justify it and from there the ball will start rolling.
When someone says to me that they don’t think Trump will do something, I respond with “who’s going to stop him?”

Twice explained the scenario turnip brings up in conversation, while also saying there are other scenarios.

Quote

Trump, 78, said in the interview that he was serious about seeking a third term in office.

"A lot of people want me to do it," Trump said, according to NBC News. "But we have – my thinking is, we have a long way to go. I'm focused on the current."

When asked about specific plans for seeking a third term, Trump confirmed one method — Vice President JD Vance wins the White House in a future election and then hands over the presidency. Trump said there were other plans, but he refused to say what they were.

Only takes 2/3 of legislatures/conventions to propose an amendment and 3/4 of legislatures/conventions to approve one. Would not be shocked to see 'conventions' of questionable legitimacy take place. Can almost guarantee one in Oregon and then I bet western Washington follows suit. You still need 4 but I'm not putting anything past this simulation.

Don’t you have to be eligible to be president to run for vice president?

also, in your scenario, I don’t think anyone who got elected president would voluntarily abdicate/resign. Might fall out of a window though.

There's an interpretation that that language means the constitutional eligibility requirements of Article II, but not that of the 22nd Amendment.

This is the constitutional question, which  is murky.

The 12th says: no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

The 22nd says: No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

The argument hinges on the difference between “being President” and “being elected President.”

The only disqualifications explicitly spelled out for “being President” is to be under 35 or not a natural born U.S. citizen.  Trump’s team has a fairly clear argument here that if the 22nd meant to say a two-turn President can never BE President or hold the office, they could have written it to say so.

Also, when the 12th was drafted and adopted, those two Art. II conditions were the only ones on POTUS' eligibility.  Did the 22nd create another condition of eligibility, or a term limit?
