man...SNL is a rerun tonight and i can't help but think they purposely picked the one with Chappelle from right before the inauguration. if it wasn't on purpose it was still poignant. famous last words...'the white house is no place for petty people... Donald Trump i wish you well...whether we voted for you or not we're all counting on you...do better this time'.

Yup, and they get propped up by the radical right so the radicals can claim they aren’t racist. These people hate the fact that they were born Black.

Truly depends on if you are white or not.

My wife (not white) got pulled aside on the way back from a girls trip out of the country. She watched a couple behind (dude white, wife Asian) got stopped, but Whitey hubby yucked it up with the ICE officer and they got out more quickly.

I came back into the US yesterday.  The lines at JFK were nuts.  Thankfully, with Global Entry, I was at the desk in about 5 minutes.  However, I had spent more than my allottment in Paris (and I always claim becuase I do not want to fuck with my GE). Because of that, I had to go sit for a bit, once they had someone to walk me into the customs area, they waited for me to get my bags, and told me to meet them.  I did.  He then said, this is the rate you would pay, but I am not going to charge you.

There was no ask to see anything else. It was all pretty standard, and they were very nice to me.

That being said, I saw a couple being questioned, and from what I could hear from the conversation, they had more than 10k in cash on them (thus the reason they were being questioned).  Other that were there in that waiting room were being called one at a time.  I did not see any of them afterwards in the same customs area I went to (which is after baggage). Then again, I was the only white woman of the lot.  That might have had something to do with it.

I hate to think the worst because everyone I dealt with was absolutely lovely to me (and I have learned to be very nice and respectful as well).  But I was, understandably, nervous in a way I had never been before, even as a white woman.

Anyone care to wonder about what's required for entry that will be normalized? Just like those countries that Dear Leader scorned.

Not to be pedantic, but limits of goods to bring back to the US duty free is $800. I declared the Goyard bag I was bringing in (which was well more than the duty free limit). The next $1,000 over $800 is assessed at 3%. Anything over is at a rate depending on what kind of good it is you bring in. The CBP officer has a lot of latitute on whether they are going to charge you the duty on the goods.  My guy chose to not charge me. This is different that just charging me to get in.

I am definitely not in support of charging people to come in, but having to pay duty on declared goods is something I have experienced under a lot of administrations, so nothing really unusual about my experience.

*used to be 3%

Also, I was of the understanding that Trump killed the $800 exemption.  Maybe that was just for Jyyyna.  It ostensibly protects a lot of foreign orders, as from Temu or Alibaba, etc.

a timely note to all international travelers: document a list of what you took with you when you departed, take pics, store copies in the cloud attached to a burner email, proving the stuff was your personal property in the us; then take pics of what you bought, get paper receipts of what you bought, take pics of said receipts, and upload same pics to the same burner email

your credit transactions overseas may be inadvertently categorized as merchandise as opposed to meals/lodging/transport - have your complete itemized list loaded and ready and have your spent totals on the tip of your tongue ready for interrogation

That is actually how every single Trump supporter, include every Republican voter on this board, thinks. See, it’s really everyone else’s fault that they had to support Trump. “You made me do this!” screams the abusive psychopath.

I get what you're saying with respect to declarations, and your experiences (which mirror my own) etc. My commentary is more along the lines of what the future may bring if the agencies decide to surveil in a more sinister way. Fine line between national security and 'we just don't like your kind.'

I had a good day today, running around and catching up on a whole lot of errands I missed doing the last couple weeks when I was out of town on the weekend.

I rocked this everywhere.

I got called out a couple times during the day(at Home Depot, and while filling up gas),  but I just gave them a blank look, and said “No entiendo, gusano!”

Kind of curious what the call outs were. Like  were people mad they thought maga before reading it or they read it and appreciated the fake out?

No, mostly informing me that Trump won the election and that I needed to get over it.   And one comment about “Black Lives Matter winding up in body bags if they rioted again.”

 Essentially what you’d expect.

As a parent of a young child, I worry about that on a daily basis.

We’ve worked hard to build a good life for ourselves and provide a good future for our kid here, but maybe that was all for naught. I’m constantly doing the mental calculus on what it would mean to start from scratch in new country. Leave our family and friends, give up our jobs, our home, everything that’s ever been considered normal to us. How bad does American life have to get before pulling that ripcord?

I’m angry about the open oppression of minorities, immigrants, and trans people. I’m angry that our president talks about claiming Greenland by any means necessary and tries to rewrite history about Putin’s war on Ukraine. I’m angry that the orange man thinks tariffs are a viable economic strategy. I’m angry that education and medicine and science and the rule of law are under attack. I’m angry that our congress has rolled over and does nothing to slow the power grab of the executive branch.

As bad as those things are, what really concerns me is the possibility of economic ruin, civil war, revolution, or just the general idea that America has forsaken its values. That’s not a future I want for my child.

It blows my mind that I have to worry about that, but here we are.

I've thought about that a lot too.  The thing I keep coming back to is the US was always the bastion of democracy, the leader of the free world.  How long will it take for the other democracies to fall and the whole world turn into regions split up amongst the oligarchs, like mob gangs and turf wars?   As uphill as it seems, staying and trying to right the ship, reinforce it with better protection from internal threats is probably quicker back to democracy than letting the whole world fall into fascism.   It could take us 2 to 3 generations to recover, but the other way, I just don't see any recovery, considering how the morons want to burn through our resources at breakneck speed which just drives us faster to climate change disaster.

I believe Maldives was under African Affairs.

Australia according to DOD is Indo-Pacom. State is using their map vs. the one they had. For instance, North Africa for DOD is part of CENTCOM. For State it was African Affairs.
