It occurs to me, having seen the most recent footage of nazis in Cincinnati, that I’ve never heard a maggat complain about nazis wearing masks.

Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip it's been.

Braxton Bragg, along with John Bell Hood, was one of the worst Generals of the Civil war and was reviled by the men under his command. It’s very likely that naming bases after them was a sort of in-joke at the idea of naming southern bases after confederate generals. I can’t think of anything more shameful for Texas and South Carolina than bases named after two traitorous, abject failures, and therefore I am very supportive of this move.

Bragg was actually really successful during the Mexican War. But even then, there were attempts on his life by his own soldiers. So, yeah, he was definitely an asshole.

JD Vance: “co-equal branches of the government and ‘checks and balances’ aren’t real.”
You know what IS real, JD? Our country’s penchant for telling monarchs to get fucked, and following through.

Lee had two outstanding generals.  His offensive coordinator, Jackson, got shot and killed accidentally by his own men and his defensive coordinator (probably the best general the South had in Longstreet) ended up becoming a pariah because he was the only one who seemed to understand the weapons etc had far outpaced the outdated tactics most of the others were running and dared to speak his mind at times during the war and after it.   The fact you rarely saw stuff named after Longstreet, even though he was their best shows you how fucking stupid the whole lot of them were.

They were all traitors to the US of course.

musk confirmed it's a judicial coup on x - check the coup thread

bbc partners w/ cbs news who did a poll results below - cbs requires adblockers off so here is the bbc snippet

Poll suggests Americans want Trump administration to focus on lowering pricespublished at 09:47
09:47

A new survey by the BBC’s US partner CBS and YouGov in the UK indicates that 77% of Americans think President Trump is doing what he promised in his election campaign.

But one issue the poll focused on was 66% of those polled don’t think the administration is focussed enough on lowering prices – don’t forget that inflation was a key reason Trump won the election.

Let’s take a look at other issues from the poll:, external

Almost 60% were in favour of Trump's administration programme to deport immigrants illegally in the US, but 52% are opposed to using large detention centres to hold people while determining who should be deported
Only 13% of those surveyed feel the US taking over Gaza would be a good idea, but the numbers are higher on Trump's handling of the Israel/Hamas war - 54% approve
The survey asked about the amount of influence X owner Elon Musk should have over government operations and spending - 23% said a lot, with 31% saying none
Meanwhile on tariffs, 56% approve of them from goods from China, 44% approve on Mexican imports, 40% think tariffs should be placed on goods from Europe and 38% think tarriifs should be placed imports from Canada

CBS News says the survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,175 US adults interviewed between 5-7 February. Per CBS, the sample was weighted to be representative of adults nationwide according to gender, age, race, and education, according to the US Census.

About those South Africans Trump says can come. They said nope.

On Saturday, two of the most prominent groups representing Afrikaners said they would not be taking up Trump’s offer of resettlement in the U.S.

“Our members work here, and want to stay here, and they are going to stay here,” said Dirk Hermann, chief executive of the Afrikaner trade union Solidarity, which says it represents around 2 million people. “We are committed to build a future here. We are not going anywhere.”

At the same press conference, Kallie Kriel, the CEO of the Afrikaner lobby group AfriForum, said: “We have to state categorically: We don’t want to move elsewhere.”

Trump’s move to sanction South Africa, a key U.S. trading partner in Africa, came after he and his South African-born adviser Elon Musk have accused its Black leadership of having an anti-white stance. But the portrayal of Afrikaners as a downtrodden group that needed to be saved would surprise most South Africans.

“It is ironic that the executive order makes provision for refugee status in the U.S. for a group in South Africa that remains amongst the most economically privileged,” South Africa’s Foreign Ministry said. It also criticized the Trump administration’s own policies, saying the focus on Afrikaners came “while vulnerable people in the U.S. from other parts of the world are being deported and denied asylum despite real hardship.”

Efficiency.

Tens of thousands of tons of food purchased through a federal program to feed hungry people overseas is stuck at a warehouse in Houston's port after President Donald Trump ordered a 90-day pause on foreign aid, according to an email from an international food agency and an employee with the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The pause comes as the Trump administration moves to dismantle USAID, one of the world's largest government aid organizations. The organization spends hundreds of millions of dollars each year through its Food for Peace program to distribute surplus crops from American farmers around the globe, according to the Congressional Research Service.

The food stuck in Houston totaled more than 31,000 tons and was part of more than 500,000 tons of food valued at $450 million now at risk of going to waste, according to the email from the international agency, which was reviewed by Hearst Newspapers. USAID food shipments are also being held up at seven other U.S. ports, including Boston, New York and Miami.

While it’s easy to look at efforts like this one, or Utah’s lawsuit, and conclude that the perpetrators suffer from both a problematic relationship with the truth and limited competence, the sheer volume of efforts to force a mass sell-off of public lands must be taken seriously. As we’re seeing across the federal government right now, lying and incompetence don’t necessarily pose the barriers they once did. My fear is that one of these attempts is going to intersect rampant corruption at just the right moment, and that’s going to cost us America’s natural heritage.

Go ahead and try it motherfuckers. Would be a huge case of FAFO.

I don’t think anything will really come of it, but if a national park got sold off, it would fall under some really horrible shit.

Nah.

I dunno.

You have to remember that the concept of Federalism was completely different in 1860, when the united states was primarily understood to be a union of fully sovereign states, not a federal entity with constituent sovereigns until the outcome of the war made it so.

There were very few senior career officers at that time and a majority of them had attended West Point around the same time. Like most of them he considered himself a senior officer of the state that had appointed him to West Point. OF COURSE the civil war was about slavery, but for career officers in 1860, the obligation of sworn duty on both sides was  NOT a matter of sentimental attachment or loyalty- the senior officers (with few exceptions) broke along lines of where the state legislature landed on the question questions of secession- if you were appointed to West Point by Maryland you stayed. If you were appointed from Alabama you left.  Maryland and Delaware were slave states, who fought for the union, until the passage of the 13th amendment.

So Longstreet went with the bad guys, reluctantly. That said, he is pretty much the only example of a very senior confederate officer who served reconstruction publicly and enthusiastically after the war. He supported black citizenship and political equality, didn’t indulge the “lost cause,” and served the United States government in multiple posts at much personal and financial risk. At one point after the war he even led a mostly black Louisiana state militia and local police against white supremacists attempting to overthrow the government.

So it’s more for his redemptive post war service and example that I think Longstreet is deserving (Lee, Davis, all the rest) where others are not.
