I'm not worried about WW3, though. The last WW was preceded by aggy's only MNC. An Aggy playoff run, let alone a title, seems quite unlikely in the near future.

When we win the title, aggy, as a branch of the University of Texas, will claim the title as their own.

Yep. We are fucked.

Counterpoint: I can think of no better time for the world to end than with Texas having just won a natty and having eternal scoreboard on, among others, OU, aggy, arky, Michigan, Clemson, tOSU, and probably Notre Dame.

It’s embarrassing to be an American these days. Our president elect speaks in broken English in his press conferences and on social media, threatening to take territories from our allies against their will.

A couple of years ago the world watched in horror as Putin invaded Ukraine. We have helped Ukraine resist. We have also been waiting to see if China would be bold enough to forcefully take Taiwan.

How exactly is the U.S. any different than Russia or China if we go down this path? We will tariff our enemies into submission and force Denmark to give up Greenland? Force Canada to become a state? I suppose there will be less bloodshed but our soon to be leader is still talking very openly about a hostile takeover of allied territories.

This bullshit about America First is no different than Russia First or PRC First. We are becoming our enemies.

The problem is that when you look around the world, it’s hard to know who the good guys are anymore. If WW3 happens, who will be the voice of reason?

We will tariff our trading partners into damaging our economy and unplugging the remaining life-support systems of the middle class.

We will threaten our closest allies alienating all other allies.

We will cozy up and emulate autocratic regimes and spread misinformation x100 so that people can't figure out what is real or not.

We will erode social programs and education in particular and then try to shame people for not being tech bros which will make up 30-80% of our new oligarchy, while the old guard steps back and counts their cash.

This is America.

Incredible how similar everything that’s happening today is to the rise of Hitler almost 100 years ago. He’s going to dismantle our constitution and half the country will cheer until they are the ones being  by rounded up

I'm not convinced Congress won't jealously guard its power when push comes to shove, particularly the Senate.

I’m not as optimistic as you. The GQP has shown they will eventually bend to his will, every single time

I'll be the first to admit I'm weirdly optimistic about this. A lot of it has to do with the fact that the entire GOP knows he's term limited and becomes politically weaker every day he's in office.

you think term limits matter to autocrats? Or that he will lose any of his support from his base? He will still be able to have members primaried if they step out of line

It's slightly complicated.  Some amount of water from Norcal is kept in Norcal to maintain ecosystems that house endangered species like the Delta Smelt.

If the Delta Smelt is ignored, more water heads south.  But south means Central Valley, not LA, where the wildfires are.  Of course, LA was founded on stealing water from the Central Valley, but I'm not sure where that stands.

So, ultimately, Trump is lying.

Not to mention that water is fed by snowmelt and if it’s a low snow year, the forests in NorCal stay dry and are at more risk for fire. Paradise might have something to say about it.

Water for LA and the surrounding area comes from the LA aqueduct, which is fed from the Southern Sierra.  It has nothing to do with NorCal.

Yes. I think it matters in the United States. A lot, actually. I also think you're going to start seeing more and more Republicans blow him off.

We’ll see. I truly hope I and others are totally wrong and are embarrassed for even entertaining it. But like that article said, Hitler either ignored the laws or perverted them. We know trump is capable of doing both of those, he already has.

The video of Saddam Hussein having legislators called out to be executed comes to mind. But hey, it can’t happen here, right?

You think Trump will be OK if CA somehow withholds its tax money, even as he tries to choke the state out?  Not happening.  And yet somehow, lots of R's in this state will still vote for him.  And yes, provided he continues to live, there will be a push to let him run a third time.

Yeah, I harbor some hope along these lines.  His ability to bring votes to the GOP is growing limited by, if nothing nothing else, his impending death, let alone his inability to run for further office.

I sit just outside this mindset and hope beyond hope that we just coast on basic economic awesomeness over the next 4 years. But there's also a part of me - for any fear raised that may seem likely or foolish - what if they try? What are we prepared to do and how far our we prepared to let it go? I've grown oh so weary of conservatives wearingthe piss out of what-if scenarios till the thought exercise has lost all meaning. But what if they try? What then? I fear there's not enough people that matter right now that can stop them if they do. My best hope is they're too stupid to succeed, like the first go round. Can we really afford to find out? Guess we're about to!

Or as I've heard it: "Germany had the same constitution in 1945 they had in 1933."

Your faith in this is misguided.

We have a Supreme Court that is 6-3.  I have no faith at all that they would faithfully adhere the Constitution if the question was put before them regarding his eligibility to serve 2 consecutive terms vs 2 non-consecutive terms, and what the 22nd amendment actually "meant".

Two things on this.  The current SCOTUS doesn't serve Trump per se.  A policy that favors Trump needs to favor some other aspect of the christofascist/P2025 agenda.  I'm not sure how this would serve any interest other than Trump.

Second, the 22nd was drafted and ratified in the modern era, so it doesn't suffer the vagary of many of the founding documents and first 100-150 years of legislation, so it is far less susceptible to fuckery.

I’m so sick of having to take this Trump/alternate reality seriously.

It hasn't even begun yet and he's just going to continue to decline.

I'm really going to have to triage news a lot more thoroughly than I did last time around. If it's not direct economic, housing, or climate/environmental policy, trying to start wars, or further eroding democracy, I am preemptively not giving a fuck.

I can't do four more years of getting worked up about wanting to nuke hurricanes or annex Greenland or drinking bleach to cure COVID or whatever. There is going to be new, really dumb shit on a near daily basis. Probably getting dumber as he ages. Gotta pace yourself and not take the bait.

Yeah, what you're touching on at the end there.  This shit is happening all over.  Europe has far right momentum all over.  I don't see it getting any better.  I also don't see any cohesiveness from the idiot far right clowns in other countries either.  Just burn it all down...that may happen once the crazies start with the nooooks...

Trump talking about annexation of other countries diplomatically strengthens Russia's ambitions of annexing Ukraine, China's ambitions of annexing Taiwan and Israel's ambitions of slowly annexing/colonizing territories in Palestinian-controlled areas.
Realignment talk not going away.

This. Trump and the US are not going to stand in opposition to this new era of militaristic expansion and invasion: we’re going to join it and even lead it.
America is Russia now.

The country that would quietly be the happiest in this scenario would be Japan. Anyone that thinks they still wouldn’t want to stick it to China eight decades later does not need to do a whole bunch of reading (although I’d encourage reading up on their animosity towards communism) to know they’d enjoy joining in on the carnage.

They could use literally the exact same excuse they used to pretend Trump wasn’t ineligible in the Colorado ballot case.
