Went to Lion King on Broadway last night.  Time Square at night. Yada, yada, yada...$192  a ticket for ‘a broadway show’  lolz, what a fucking scam. $17 drinks in a little fucking sippy cup during the show?  WHAT THE FUCK, PEOPLE?????

This place is a fucking dump and I would NEVER, EVER,EVER, EVER want to live here.  People are ‘ need to be punched in the fucking face’ rude and inconsiderate.  Unaware or totally giving no fucks...either way, they can go fuck themselves.  The subway stations are like giant dumpsters, smelling like they are  filled with shit and piss from homeless people who haven’t bathed in weeks.

I am going to see 9-11 Memorial today.

Glad this sumbeech is marked off the list now.  Never coming back unless it is a layover at the airport.  Fuck this place.

LMFAO at a tourist doing the most intolerably tourist shit possible then concluding that it's a reflection of the whole place.  You're doing NY life wrong.

Sure. The train stations were full of tourists. Lolz. All of the tourists had Knicks/ Jets/ Giants jerseys on.

agreed. The LK thing was absolutely taking one for the team and touristy AF. I get it. Going to 9-11 Memorial today and then over to Long Island where my 79 year old uncle (With us also) grew up.  Today will be better

Has to be.

Multiple career firefighters in family, including late grandfather and a cousin here for the trip. We ready...in a very solemn respectful way.  It’s the one thing I voted to go see on the trip. Other that that, IDC.  That’s why we had what we had yesterday. Lol.

We should start a list of Surl tested, Surl approved places, with a quick snippet or tip about each. For instance:

Frenchette - Excellent French fare - grab a seat at the bar (sans reservation) and the Couteaux Casino

Her name is Han - solid Korean street food, busy/expect a wait. Great place for a date night to share large pot/soup. Drink the infused Soujou at your own risk #hangover

Gupshup - loud hip Indian food place in Gramercy. No prob getting reservation midweek. Very crowded on weekends. Great drinks. Get 4 of house chutneys and eat with Naan, share several of the small plates.

Hit the Patriot in Tribeca.

Lol. Just don’t order liquor from them. They’re known to pull the cheap liquor in expensive bottle game or was busted a while back.

Good trashy bar though and I’d be shocked if the snobbish Tribeca stroller moms don’t run that bar off like they did the rest of them.

Carry on

It is amazing museum and I’m guilty of this, but hate the commercialism. I bought one small fridge magnet in the gift shop in the basement since it was there but I’ll be dammed if I didn’t feel a little sick to my stomach doing it. I get they need funding too but wouldn’t mind if they got rid of the entire store there. And all the happy selfies around the footsteps. Not saying people need to be morose statues but have a little respect people.

Well, I thought I was ready...  that is easily the most moving experience I have had with a museum/ memorial.  Heavy, heavy stuff all the way through and it is so incredibly well done.  Could have spent all day there...contemplating, reflecting, and again, mourning. Wow.

Before that visit, I would have said the Holocaust Museum in DC was the most intensely moving place I had been.  It was tough, but also spectacularly beautiful. This was a weird dichotomy of tribute to bravery, heroism, and   Stoic resolution; while also displaying the tragic, horrific treachery of the shitheads who did it.

I still don’t think I have emotionally digested everything we saw yesterday. Incredible.

The doodlepad fucking hit me like a sledgehammer.

It is pretty great and very moving . I went a few months after it opened when it was still fenced off and you needed tickets .the selfie stuff is annoying but sign of the times.

I could only handle about 10 mins and I had to get out. Walked towards the under construction freedom tower. A security guard stopped me saying it was an active construction zone and pointed me way to the other side. Explained that I was there on that day and needed out. He opened the fence and walked me through the site. Now I take tourist friends and just point them in the direction and go have a coffee or beer.

Had a pretty spectacular run the last 7 days:

  • Last Tuesday Dinner: Rented out Carbone for a closing dinner.
  • Thursday Dinner: Lilia for birthday
  • Friday, group of friends came in town:
    • Friday dinner: Au Cheval
    •  Saturday Dinner: Chinese Tuxedo
    • Sunday Lunch: l’artusi
    • Sunday Dinner: Cote (the winner in my opinion).

I am full.

Went to Atoboy last night followed by a few beers at Churchill Tavern (next door).  Churchill is decorated for the hols, and I highly recommend it.

Will post photos of both it and Nami Nori a little later.

Nice. We went to Atoboy the other night and really enjoyed it. Atomix is on my 2020 list.

How was Chinese Tuxedo?

We had a big group and did the tasting menu. Food was good (nothing outrageous), cocktails were better, and the space was pretty cool. It took forevvverrrrr. I think our reservation was at 9:30 and we didn’t leave until after 12. Pulqueria next door after 5 or 6 rounds of cocktails was also very fun.

Good to know. I have Llama San coming up on Jan 11. Will do Frenchette on my birthday (10th).

Have NY at Crown Shy.

Olmstead, Tokyo Record Bar, and Cote are all on my list.

Nice. I have Llama San bookmarked, so let us know how it is.

Cote is just incredible. Can’t wait to go back. Olmstead was also really good, although it’s been a few years. Tokyo Record Bar is really fun (food is good, but more about the atmosphere).

Got back from over the Holidays.  We're not as fancy as some of you, but some really good food.

Some highlights that I haven't seen mentioned...

Lovely Day- Cool little Thai place in Soho/Nolita area.

Via Carota- in the W Village.  Amazing Italian..no reservations

Pastis-  I guess it closed and re-opened in a diff location.  Went for lunch.  The steak sandwich might be my featured dish if I were on "Best thing you ever ate".

Ricotta cheesecake at Pepolino (between Tribeca and Soho)

You did well. Via and Pastis are two of the best, and you are 100% spot on re the steak sandwich. I used to live around the corner from Lovely Day and really liked it as well.

In addition to Via and Pastis, the following were some of my most repeated restaurants of the year: Cafe Altro Paradiso, Buvette (every year), i Sodi, Cervo’s, Wildair, JeJu, and Blue China.

There is a place my girlfriend and I go on the UWS. It is called Shalel Lounge. It is not easily visible. You have to walk down a set of stairs to get to it. It is Moroccan food and it is delicious. The atmosphere is so nice. There is one back table where you can see some water running down into a pool of rose petals. Sat there before with my girlfriend and mom. It was pretty cool. I loved the Shakshuka because I have made that before. They made it with lamb. The chicken tagine is very tender and the taste is ridiculously good.

If you want to have an intimate date this is the place to go. You feel like you are not in New York when you are there. Highly recommended.

Ok...So, I've got a short trip planned to NYC coming up.  Basically, 2 days staying at the Hilton Midtown.

I've never been to NYC (and probably won't go back unless I have to).

I have ONE thing planned...dinner at Per Se, so I have that going for me.

What are the things I absolutely "must do" in the short time I'm there?

I've got the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building on my list.  I'm thinking about a trip to Katz's Deli, too (yeah yeah, cliche, sue me).  Other than that, what other things can I see in the short time I'm there?

A truly world class city no more than a few hrs away by direct flight and you plan to do 2 days then check the box and move on?  Lol

Die?  Nope.  I'm just not that big of a city person.  I've got plenty of places to travel to in the world that don't involve brand new big cities.  I grew up overseas going to cities like Munich, London, Paris, etc...and work has sent me to places like Singapore, Prague, Dubai, etc...

I'd rather spend my travel dollars on going to places with beaches or historical sites...

I AM literally checking the box on NYC.

Yes...I get that there are a lot of great things there.  But, they don't really interest me much.  To me, it's not much better than DFW with really fucking tall buildings and people that talk funny...

As a side note (based on your username), I checked Chicago off the list because I've been through O'hare a few times...(I'm only ¼ kidding)...

Lol. All good - just seemed odd.  I’ve been to most of the cities you mentioned and I’d rather hit Budapest than NYC but the cities you mentioned are hard to just hop on a plane and enjoy a quick weekend.

But if that’s truly your only trip there here’s a shot at an itinerary... I think you have to hit the 9/11 memorial.  It’s really well done.

And if you only have one trip use a guide and squeeze in as much as you can - you mentioned liking history...the old school gangs of NY / 5 points tours are badass.  I think the name we had was Ed Welter?  Search the 5 star options on TripAdvisor.

You only have 2 days so other than those 2 suggestions leave some time to roam and explore / eat some great food.

Thanks!

I figured I might grab a NY slice (not Sbarro) while I was there (when lived in Weatherford, we had pizza place where everyone that work there was from the Bronx, so I've had some).  Plus Katz Deli and Per Se, so I have a lot of the food covered.

I'll definitely put the 9/11 memorial on the list now.

If you don't have a ton of time and aren't going up into the Statue of Liberty's crown, I would recommend just doing the Staten Island Ferry round trip. You'll get a good enough view of Lady Liberty in under 1 hour. Then you're not too far from the 9/11 Memorial and can walk over to the Brooklyn Bridge. I highly recommend crossing over and seeing if you can get a seat at Juliana's in DUMBO. Don't be a pussy, utilize the subway. Takes you right back to Times Square. Top of the Rock is better than Empire State Building IMO. You actually have both the ESB and Freedom Tower in your downtown view. And you're closer to Central Park.
