I wouldn’t stay in the FiDi if you’re there on vacation. It basically shuts down after 6 PM. It’s quiet but there are a lot of homeless people there. Wouldn’t want to be there moving around after dark with kids. Stay in Jersey City if you want to save $ and get a better room. Quick PATH to 33rd or WTC and much more to do/eat roaming around by your hotel. If the city is a must, there are plenty of options for your budget, albeit, smaller rooms.

Wants to take the fam to NYC and you suggest Jersey Fucking City for lodging? This is insanely bad advice.

Can anybody recommend a budget hotel for #surlypoors? Location isn’t a huge deal since we don’t have to cram in a bunch of stuff, thoughwe do want to stay near a subway stop. Is there downside to staying in FiDi or somewhere else (don’t care about nightlife around the hotel)?

Maybe if you read the request my response, and context, it would make more sense?

Thanks, man, I was hoping you’d chime in. I’ll check out some places in Jersey City. Sounds promising. We don’t necessarily feel like the city is a must. But safety is a must, so I appreciate the guidance on FIDI at night.

I’ll add this to the list of a dozen I owe you for all your previous recs/advice. Appreciate it.

Nope. Still makes no sense. Your brain is completely broken, but we already knew that from elsewhere.

Safety is not a problem. Manhattan is a safe place. Like any major city, be aware of your surroundings and you will be totally safe. For god’s sake, don’t take a trip to Manhattan and ruin it by staying in Jersey.

Anymore whenever we're down that way and staying overnight we'll just stay across the river in Newark. There's a diner we like(d) to hit up there and we can use the car instead of the train from Albany.

I wouldn’t stay in Jersey City as transit can be a real problem.

Never had an issue from Newport in the 7 months I lived there, albeit, not as many trains on the weekend. Even walk through the mall to get to the train, which is a bonus this time of year. I would stay in Manhattan, but, am just giving an alternative to save $. Brooklyn bridge is just as expensive and LIC is too sketchy.

The Path is down right now. It is supposed to come back online on Feb 25th, but who knows if it will finish up in time. Too much can go wrong once you are in New Jersey. Stay in Manhattan. FIDI is fine.

Looks like we're headed to NYC for Spring Break.  We'll be there for 3 full days with travel on Tuesday and Saturday (Wednesday-Friday).  We're planning on seeing 2 shows and probably going to the Met (no one besides me has ever been.)

5 people of us are going and we're not cramming into 1 hotel room.  4 women and me.  VRBO looked promising for some stuff in/near Chelsea but then everything is booked when we go to reserve.  Open to staying anywhere as long as it's "reasonable", not a ghost town at night and possibly easy to get to/from a subway line without having to make a Warriors style trip through NYC.  .  There's isn't a whole lot in Brookyn for whatever reason.

So what if we said "Screw it, we're going to stay in Jersey."   I'm not terribly concerned about transit as we won't be closing bars down at 4:00 am.

We really want 2 bedrooms and at least a small kitchen for breakfast stuff.   Don't want to break the bank so what are the areas to avoid across the river?  We normally do a rental versus hotels when we travel so I am generally good at figuring out what's what and whether the pictures do it justice.

Look up this place. Stayed a few times there for Giants games. Right near the rail/water and fits your kitchen/rooms/budget requests

Again, the PATH is down at the moment. Weather can wreack havok on ferries and reliability. And the Holland Tunnel is a fucking nightmare. You are getting advice from a guy who lives in Long Island (Spanky lived in Jersey how long ago?) and a guy who stayed in Jersey City over 5 years ago.

Stay in Manhattan. You will save time, if not some money, by staying in the city. March is going to be a time where the weather can be really, really shitty (think lots of rain, blustery cold days), so being closer is better.

I haven’t been there in thirty years but from what I remember,

Tall buildings.
Lots of people.
All of the cars are yellow.

Maybe it’s different now.

Spoiler

I went to NY a number of times in the olden days and I loved it. I could easily have seen myself living there in my yute.

The San Genero Festival in Little Italy, Paul Simon in Central Park, party bus to Atlantic City, mid-May afternoon game at old Yankee Stadium, every square inch of The Met, a slice at Famous Ray’s, (all of them!).

I’m too stress-prone now, I guess.

I hope y’all have as much fun as I did.

FiDi is absolutely fine especially if you stay close to the 1, 2, 3, A, C, E, R, or W. We prefer it to staying in Midtown.

But is it preferable to Jersey City?
