Going to be in San Antonio all weekend for high school band competitions and looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant.

Criteria includes

1)Not on river walk

2) Locals not tourists

3) prefer not long waits Reservations or advance wait list would be great

Gracias.

Rosarios. Sol Luna. Mirasol. Los Barrios. Guajillos

We've got the other Guajillos here on N Padre Island.  It's GOOOOD.

But, the caveat.

As they say, it is Mex without the Tex.  Don't expect Tex Mex there.

Taco House on San Pedro, order up front, no frills, fantastic food. There should be many pics on this site of some of their offerings. Carne G puffy tacos are one of my faves.

you could stop with this list, but i'll add la fogata, el mirador, la fonda on main, mi tierra's.

I feel like the last few times I've gone to La Fonda, the food quality was way below what it was when I was growing up. They used to have the fajitas, for example, come out nice and charred on the searing hot skillet. The most recent time I ordered it, it came out on a plate and the fajias looked so sad. I haven't been back since.

lol at all the whitewashed suggestions on here.

El Bucanero - Mexican seafood. Multiple locations

Pollos Asados Los Norteños - Rigsby location is the best.

Taquitos West Ave

Taqueria Datapoint

Thanks to both . I’ll look at all of them. Any thoughts on cuishe cocina? 3 minutes from my hotel.

We enjoyed it and will go back. Interesting menu.

Next to my neighborhood.  If you see an orange Mustang or motorcycle on Dezavala, dont run into me.

Btw. They recently added a bar like an old wooden mexican bar

3 weeks ago saw a michelada on the drink menu that looked good with the big Coors banquet bottle. No prices listed. Got the check and it was $23

Not as good as Jacala...

But it's good.

Of course, I unfortunately spent 30 years in DFW after leaving SA so maybe my taste buds adapted to having to deal with all the subpar TexMex up there.

And now I'm in Corpus so I'm eating MUCH better than DFW but still different than SA.

BTW, go try La Cabana out in Lakehills and let me know what you think.  It's where my dad lives so I go there every time I see him.
