I had a Trumper tell me yesterday that all illegal immigrants are criminals because they broke the law by coming here.  That was her rationalization for deporting all of them.

As someone said up thread, I'll personally benefit from tax breaks and business reforms that should come our of this.  I work for a bank and know this will affect me monetarily (in a positive way) before the end of the year because our dividend is now going to go up for sure.

I'm going to keep my head down and my mouth shut while encouraging my daughters to move out of Texas.  And maybe find a significant other from New Zealand so we can all emigrate.

Ok. Well, Leticia James and Gavin Newsome view the law the same was as the Trumper you mentioned. So, sounds like we are all aligned.

I think the US will be fine.  It’s not like Trump has a history of fucking up everything he has ever been put in charge of.  As for me, I’m a rich white dude and my industry will do better under Trump/Republicans with less regulation (I unlike others didn’t vote for him because I would personally gain but I guess now I will just enjoy the extra money I am going to get).  My main decision going forward is do I want to stay in TX.  I just moved to a house on the lake in DFW but if the Republicans keep passing laws that make me and the wife uncomfortable then we will have to move somewhere else in the US.

I don't agree with the this in the short- , intermediate- , or long-term.

Immediately, many talented people on here are telling us they'll be less engaged with their neighbors and society. I don't think it's debatable that perception of the nation has declined internationally.

Talented scientists were already less likely to come to the US after 2016. Now with RFK leading the Public Health Service into the ground, funding for US science will be much less certain.

Longer term, @PenelopeWitherspoon mentioned that the US$ as the reserve currency was on shakier footing based on Trump's election. China would be just as fine with the renminbi as a reserve currency. In a multi-polar world, interest rates rise and standard of living falls.

Trump is a fuckup, no doubt. But his staff aren't all idiots, and a lot of them are malicious.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but this is just nonsense dooming. You can't project what will happen or that elections will become less free and fair etc.

Elections are already less free and fair: gerrymandering, ID requirements, removal of voting drop boxes and polling locations. The ability to spread disinformation and general social media control are another angel.

@Brisketexan

I understand the impulse, but I'm sorry to hear this.

I'm going the other direction. After Trumps 2016 election win, I started volunteering at a police athletic league. I did it for about 3 months, got busier at work and never went back. I'm going to go back now and will try to be more committed. I'm going to lean in hard to one election every cycle. I'm focused on Abigail Spanberger winning in 2025.

This is for my own benefit, the benefit of my family, and the benefit of my community. There's lot of data showing greater social engagement and a positive attitude to those around you reflects back to you. I'd like to set a positive example for my daughter and nephews and nieces.

You both seem like people who are a positive influence on your communities. I hope you stay engaged and continue to make the world you want to live in.

There are multiple posts in the election and or poll volunteers thread about access being better than what the narrative alleges.

That doesn't mean it is remotely perfect, but folks even ready to bitch about it were saying they were pleasantly surprised about early voting hours or other access issues.

Does anyone on here know someone who was kept from making a reasonable effort to vote?

Unfortunately, yes. I personally had turn away multiple people from voting at the poll I worked at on Tuesday because the voter was not made aware that they had been dropped from the rolls.

My short-term prediction is that Trump's henchmen will be coming for my job (NOAA) by the end of 2025.  They already have a hit list out for some DHS folks (https://www.dhswatchlist.com/).  Wont be long before they start coming for us, the climate change folks, too.

My long-term prediction is Trump will be Dear Leader until he departs this Earth because no one will check him.  They'll bypass the two-term limit by saying the 22nd Amendment meant no one could serve more than two consecutive terms.

Elections are already less free and fair. Stuffing the ballot box is last century. There are many ways to subtly influence an election result that add up to make a significant difference. Chief amongst these is the control or lack of control of information.

I would point out how Al Gore had an election openly stolen from him by the Bush campaign and SC in 2000, but most people here were either the guys pounding on the doors in Miami-Dade or cheering on those who did (if politically engaged at all so long ago), so I'm not sure that will register as meaningful.

Subtle Internet influence campaigns don't really stand out to me as all that big of a deal.

I’m sorry. What have the Democrats done in this area?

They have tried to pass stricter gun control laws and have not added the largest increase to the national deficit in history like Trump did in just four years. To name a few things.

The MAGA answer to an individuals safety is to have everyone carry a loaded weapon around. To make our schools safer, you simply arm teachers and security officers with AR-15’s.

Regarding the largest increase to the national deficit in history, Trump added more to this deficit than all the other Presidents in history combined, the MAGA response? So what you fucking liberal…

BTW, I’m a registered independent. I probably would have voted for a Cheney - Kinzinger ticket. On the other side I would vote for something like a Manchin - Kelly, Shapiro, Newsom, Whitman type ticket

I love the obvious sham charities that get huge local political support. I had to go to a huge fundraiser for a "charity" that supposedly gives housing and other support to women who say they would get an abortion if they didn't have a free room and board, pre-natal paid for, etc. They had been around a while and helped a grand total of one woman. At the fundraiser they werer hyping a plan to build a facility to house several women (maybe up to 8, IIRC). The hope was to raise something like $1.5 million. From the look of things, that night they raised at least $25k, maybe a bunch more. I wrote "LOL, NOPE" on the pledge card and turned it in without any ID info on it.

I haven't followed up, but considering this was a year before Hobbs, I bet the founder folded the charity and pocketed the money.

If you go to Chamber of Commerce events in Montgomery County, especially The Woodlands or Conroe, you will meet several founders of charities like this. MoCo is lousy with this nonsense.

I’ve got some leads on a few opportunities that could be very lucrative, they were there anyway Trump has nothing to do with them, but distract myself by making more. thats M-F type stuff.

climate change is the big one, I’m distraught over what it means for my sons, one was terribly upset yesterday. It’s hard not to be he has no ability to participate and he sees really dumb dude bros high fiving in the hallways over trumps win. This should be the single issue we all vote for but it somehow never is.

other than that as I’ve said on other threads, we will do what humans should do, raise my sons to understand how powerful the algorithm is, practice putting phones down, avoid big tech social media, cook together, eat together, enjoy the outdoors more, enjoy our hobbies, find opportunities to give back and help others, we will build stronger relationships and practice gratitude until we have a shot and fighting this nonsense again.

That has not been verified. The EU climate change monitoring service has ONLY said that October is "virtually certain" to be the hottest ever, not that it was the hottest ever. So I think we're good.

When I was a kid my mom got involved for a bit with some sort of local anti-graffiti charity. She was really into the whole broken windows thing and they said they were too. The organizers raised like $50k-$75k claiming they'd use it to clean up graffiti and I'm pretty sure the extent of their anti-graffiti efforts were to call the city and report it when they saw some.
