Non-partisan "Fuck the Status Quo" Thread of Dominance

Hank Kingsley

I support the sentiment of this thread, but it never lasts. There's a handful of posters glaringly missing from this board right now, and an influx of non-partisan posters that make the discussion tolerable right now.

But it won't last.  The 24/7 news cycle will run out of actual things to discuss, and the only people who will care enough on a regular basis to post are the extreme partisans.  This is just the way things are.

So in all honesty, I think this is a bit too convenient an excuse in toto. Is it part of it? Yeah, absolutely. But it's not all of it. I fully believe that it's purposeless and ennui that is the real driver. By any metric thinkable, people are better off than 40 years ago. Health outcomes (which are now reversing the past few years because of idiotic choices), you name it. Comfort has never existed for humans at the level it does now. The Cold War went away, existential questions faded. And people were left with a life that closely resembles the people in Wall-E.

We used to socially engineer purpose by default, because everything required manpower, social institutions were almost compulsory, you had to have interactions for everything because it couldn't happen online etc..., but now, not so much. People who are intrinsically driven and have a strong sense of self have coped fine, but the other half hasn't.

We definitely lack purpose in this country and leads for many to try and manufacture causes worth fighting for.

I just can't wrap my head around the idea that state rights is a good idea with abortion. Determining personal freedoms based on where you or your parents live seems absolutely ridiculous to me. It forces people to move away from where they WANTED to be, and the long term affects of that type of migration will split this country apart even further.

It’s not just abortion. It’s about the right to privacy and determining your own healthcare choices.

Because lobbying is legal

Right.. but was there any concernted effort on the part of any Democrat group (or otherwise) to press the issue regarding the food cost increase and responsible parties during the election cycle to either candidate?

Did it turn out this was a major factor in the election?

I'd argue it was and that nobody, at all, called out the reality for the most part left the ill informed voters to make a choice. Existing or new. Problem = fix in their minds.

So... what's the fix. Funding 3rd party marketing efforts to bring it to the forefront during the election cycles. Make them address the issue. It doesn't fix it long term but it's at least a starting point. I'm not saying my idea is the best or right one... but at least it's an idea.

I don't disagree.

And I've watched this phenomenon crop up in American politics my whole life.  "I don't like the way things are.  I want a huge change.  Hey, shooting my own dick clean off is a big change, let's do that!"  I almost always understand the desire to change course.  I'll never understand the desire to pick a course that is plainly destructive.  But we do it over and over and over, in both political directions, so obviously it's an irrepressible element of human nature.

Which I no longer give a shit about.  Nobody else is worth my time or energy or give a shit.  If you want to touch the hot stove, burn your hand to the bone, and die when it goes septic.....good for you.  Choices have consequences.  Oh, and if those choices hurt other people, which they most certainly will.....fuck 'em too.  I've tried to care.  I've tried to live a life that gives a shit about them.  It has made no difference.  It will never make a difference.

Humans will be selfish and cruel, and will always hurt the weakest and most vulnerable, smiling and laughing triumphantly as we do so.  So, get on with it.

I think you are just needing time to process and it's an emotion you are expressing, but if you really are resigned, this is a sad indictment and reflects poorly on you IMO.

Mostly for naught, by the way.

Fuck it.  It's me time.  And if you think I'm alone, I spent dinner last night with my minister wife who fundamentally agrees.  It's the only path to any inner peace.  Caring about other people when they are bent on the 1-2 plan of 1) hurting everyone else, and 2) hurting themselves, is a wasteful and exhausting effort.  So, cut that shit out.

Joe Biden is, for a politician, about as likable as it gets. Describing this as not much more complicated than his unlikability papers over that any other person filling the role of Democratic Leader would and will be made to be at least as unlikeable. It’s not a function of how unlikeable the person is.

Even if Surly Rs do agree, it won’t mean shit. There are many issues with broad support among the masses. Because these posters elected politicians for whom working togather, for the common good, went out with Gingrich.

Issues like immgration, as we recently learned, once again. Abortion is another issue. As is sensible sex education (I assume.) So is weed. These things have strong majority support.

Compromise is not how minority rule works.

How long have I been on the Ledge?  Yeah.  Don't doubt my commitment to a position.

Here's your quick answer on our electoral position, based on Pew research.  This is the #1 question that drove the voting divide:

Would you say that most of the time people try to help others or just look out for themselves? Do you think most people would try to take advantage of you if they got the chance or would try to be fair no matter what?

People more likely to answer that question "yes/would take advantage of you" were significantly more inclined to vote Trumpish.  And the second part is clear as well -- they THINK that of others, because that's how THEY view the world.

They've won.  We have defined our ethos, stated plainly above: 1) Just look out for yourself.  2) Take advantage of others if you get the chance.

We might as well engrave those on all the monuments.  The are who we are.  Those are our DEFINING beliefs.  Don't take my word for it.  That's what the American people actually said, and they voted accordingly.  Accept the will of the people, amigos.  Don't fight against the tide.  Ride the wave.

I agree with you about those people.   I just know some of us can't and aren't like that. Do I care about me and my family first and foremost?  A resounding yes.  Do I care about others and take care not to take advantage of them?  Again, yes.  Do I try and help others who are not as fortunate as I am.  Yes.

And so do you.

Bullshit. You, and only you, have to look in the mirror every morning. Do I like the person I see?

For me that means I do think and worry about others. Selfish is a shitty way to go through life.

That is my litmus test.

Back to the Truce. I will work with others if their goal is to discuss solutions vs. cramming it down other's throats. If you are coming to the meeting, better have a solution. If it is wrong, we can white the board clean and work together.

He was.

The Gospel is garbage.  Platitudes that the supposed champions of, "Christians," disdain at an "oil and water don't mix" level.

Let me give you a snippet of the rational perspective on that.  At our church, each Sunday a member has come forward and shared their "faith story."  They've ranged in topic, from how you came to faith, how you practice it, what it has meant to you.  I thought about what mine would be.  And it kept coming back to "service," and how that's been ingrained in me and my family.  How my son called me a couple of days after the war in Ukraine started, and how he was going to go help (and he ended up staying in Berlin, feeding fleeing families).  How we loaded up a truck and trailer of supplies and went to Houston to help after Harvey, before the water had even all receded.  How that had been ingrained in me by my education in faith over my life.

But looking at that rationally.....for what?  Ukraine will fall.  Those people are fucked.  Houston?  There will be more, and worse hurricanes.  There will not be resources to help the victims -- the private sector will not be interested and will be sheltered from any obligations, and the government....well, fuck that socialist shit.  Those are the outcomes we've chosen. Why in the blue fuck have I or my family spent ANY of our energy fighting against the things that humanity so desperately wants?  That's how we want it to be.  So.....let people have what they want, and get out of their way.

Jesus was a sucker.  Don't be a sucker.

Before I’m willing to move on to good faith policy discussions, I need everyone who voted for Trump to admit one thing. You have sold out and abandoned any character or integrity you may have once had. There are a lot of folks that will claim the lesser of two evils blah blah blah. Bullshit. You didn’t like Harris for whatever reason. That’s fine. Just know you also flushed your character when you pulled that lever for Trump. You have forever lost any moral high ground you might have thought you had in exchange for attaching yourself to that POS. Look normal elections are about policy. This one was much more than that and that’s why it stings the way it does.

SO, if you are willing to admit you traded your integrity and character for a “win” then we can start talking about a truce and healing. Until then you are as oblivious as you were the minute you cast your vote.
