This morning, I gave a guest lecture for an art class at a large university in a big city. The topic had to do with art and technology, which fit the prof's syllabus. (The date had been set since the summer).  We probably should have moved it back, given the outcome of the election. But the prof thought my talk would be a nice break from all the politics.

Let me tell you what I saw:

I walked into a medium-sized lecture hall at 9:15am. 60-70 students. Most all the student's faces were filled with sadness, grief, distraught, and looked just flat beaten.

-- Especially the female students. It was beyond grief, beyond fear ... perhaps a catatonic state of resignation of the coming HORROR. It was a SHOCKING scene. One that I will NEVER ever forget.

The (untenured) prof had told me the university has a policy about being neutral on political discussions (in case I said anything).

I did not want to get the prof in trouble, but I could not ignore what was before my eyes.

After I got the podium and put on my remote mic, I said something to the effect of:

"Hi everyone, I can tell you are deeply saddened. I feel it too. My girlfriend and I have barely slept the last two nights ...  she is numb, distraught, and sometimes in tears. As we all know ... something important happened on Tuesday.

"I am told that the university has a policy of being neutral in political discussions. Sorry, but that is utterly impossible. (Immediately, several women began instinctively nodding their heads in agreement. Some dudes, too.)

"Now, I do not want to get your professor in trouble. Let me just say this:

"I am against everything going down in this country since Tuesday night. And I mean EVERYTHING!

-- (Yes, I shouted a bit .... and this seemed to break through the catatonic state. Some faces changed expression. Others sat up, etc. It was clearly something they did expect to hear ... especially from a white dude possibly around the age of their parents/uncles, etc

"This is horrifying, terrifying, insane, and beyond belief. But, this era was not unforeseen. As many writers and thinkers have noted, Fight Club was a key warning 25 years ago. This danger has been building. I am sorry the news media and other institutions have failed to alert you and society to the dire danger now surrounding us. Just know I get your sadness and I am going to do my best against this world for a better future? How, in my works, I am not sure. But, we must be creative in thinking about how to save your future." (far from a perfect little speech, but it was the best I had without getting prof in trouble. The students need to know the system is insane.)

I then proceeded to my talk, which went great, but Q&A was kinda subdued. Not surprising.

If you had seen the faces of the students, especially the females, you would know there is:

NO FUCKING TRUCE

Not here, not anywhere.

(No, I do not have any quick solutions, there are none. But, I am certain there no kind of intellectual-philosophical truce possible. None. You don't bargain your soul with fascists.)

That was not my intention. The hope for this thread also included a place to have civil, ongoing discussion after Trump takes office. Not that people couldn't challenge ideas or policies that could be enacted during his upcoming administration.

Truce was probably a poor word choice. I'd like to have a place where we can discuss things with the temperature turned down.

I don’t have any insight into the Google situation specifically; however, Google is a massive business with many different segments/operations. Let’s assume a business has 2 different segments: one is wildly profitable and the other is losing money.

Should the business be allowed to layoff people in the nonprofitable operation? Are they required to keep those people forever and siphon the profits from the first business to paying those in the loser?

Stock buybacks are consistently viewed as some terrible aspect of corporate America today. From my perspective, buybacks are merely an indication that the Company generates more cash flow than it can invest in other opportunities profitably. Occasionally buybacks are abused and the Company ends up taking on debt which can have negative repercussions.

It’s just another way to return cash to shareholders. Are dividends bad?

I’ve worked in and around Fortune 1000 companies for my entire career. Almost every organization has some level of fat which can be trimmed.

Educate yourself. They didn’t trim fat. They trimmed core employees in charge of product in a profitable section of alphabet to then do massive buybacks.

Everyone has a moral compass.  How do you separate an opinion from the framework of your morality? That's what you're asking for but only for the religious.

She’s only asking for the religious because everyone else has an existing framework. It’s called laws and the legal system. We’re all subject to it. The problem is that despite a Legal separation of church and state, at least in the condition, some people insist of also subject their personal moral compass onto others who don’t share that religion. Which makes it oppression when they try to make universal laws based on their religious morality.

There should be a better way.  And employers who turn a blind eye should be punished.  Maybe there could be a bipartisan effort here.

There won’t. Why don’t companies enforce the laws on the books now? This new regime will have all 3 branches of government, including both chambers of congress. They will have a popular vote mandate. What conclusions will you draw personally if they do NOT enforce the laws on the books currently?

They killed Roe. They dreamed that shit into existence through unflappable will.

On our side, despite all their fucking horseshit, we are climbing upward constantly towards a brighter and more accepting future. Biden had a trans woman in his cabinet and a black female VP. It's not a smooth, unbroken 45-degree incline, but if you pull back far enough it's damned close to it.

It's very easy to just scroll past the myopic, zero-perspective, "LOOK AT ME!" doomsaying/whining and not let it skew rational perspectives. I highly recommend it.

It's far more rational, given historical perspective and basic reasoning, than assuming the pothole ahead is actually a chasm. It could be one, sure, but that's not the pattern and there's nothing purposeful that comes from embracing irrational fears.

But we're too reliant on metaphor here, the reality of what we need to do is build bridges towards the people we need to vote with us to get the things we want enacted. Dismissing the vast swathe of American voters as irredeemable isn't emotionally soothing right now, but it's dumb both in terms of practice and in terms of accurately reading the world. People aren't evil, by and large, but they are dumb and easily swayed.

So let's sway them.

I've been alive too long to buy into this emo shit about the human race. We are vast; we contain multitudes.

Very few of the grown-ups who voted for the Shitpile did so because they genuinely wanted to hurt someone. Did a few/ten thousand of the dumbass Gen Z'ers who have no life experience or perspective so they think owning people is a legitimate way of life? Sure. But Grandpa Trump-lover is far more ignorant than he is malevolent and he's often very easy to bring on side (in terms of interpersonal positivity, not voting liberal) with love, affection, and non-judgmental outreach. If winning is the goal, of course.

Your cuntiness knows no bounds, which given where you got your undergrad degree, is completely expected. Current undergrad acceptance rate there is just a tad under 66%.  Talk about academic rigor! LO-Fucking L.

But since this is for policy discussion, I think making good paying jobs available to people without college degrees is a great idea. A lot of folks that work with computers or programming are good at it becuase they have a talent for it. No college degree required. Kamala had a plan for that, which would raise the uneducated amongst us. Seems like a winner IMO.

A few days ago in the glee that was the ‘keep the party going’ thread I said I really didn’t think 40% plus of the country was racist/sexist shitbags.  I was shouted down and told that pretty much everyone voting for Trump is just that.

I think after seeing how many minorities and women voted for Trump I am somewhat vindicated.  Yes that party and man have a lot of assholes voting for them.  But that’s far from the whole block.  Ironically, that side feels a lot more like a melting pot than the left which wants to beat everyone over the head if they don’t march in step with the company line.  I voted straight D just like the last few elections but I never thought everyone on the other side is an asshole.

No matter what you think, if you really want the Dems to win more, they absolutely have to change the way they market to the average voter.

The democratic platform is soup to nuts a fucking loser. The American public just told everyone paying attention that fact. It’s a fucking loser. All branches of government and a popular vote fucking loss. How many people here would have bet their life savings that Trump loses the popular vote, even if he lost the presidency? You can blame low educated voters. You can blame a media based on profit versus informing citizens. You can blame whoever the fuck you want. But it’s a fucking loser. That video Bo&W posted was right; introspection. You can’t make changes if you don’t win, and you’re not winning on your current platform.

this isn’t a rah rah post for the right. It’s just a fact. Loser platform. 50% of white women said fuck off. 45% of Latinos said go fuck yourself. Young men of all demographics said eat my ass. Blaming messaging and libsplaining some principle skinner bullshit. “Oh if they just didn’t understand.” America is fucking dumb. You can’t make them understand. Stop trying. Figure out a new platform and new messaging because America sucks right now. And the right sucks balls too but at the end of the day no one seems fucking happy except the trolls over here dunking on their day of identity politics victory.

It’s simple ads that work. Nobody in the current electorate gives a shit about your details policy. That’s why reeling in left wing media that is constantly criticizing their own party is detrimental moving forward. It’s easier to get messaging out when everything is unified. That’s why GOP easily controls narratives even negative ones to them they’re able to flip.

No longer looking defining the guy you're going fishing with by his voting history or even his political beliefs. No longer asking people who they voted for or trying to divine their beliefs. Starting to ignore what they say that is clearly just mindless or reflexive, figuring out where their better angels are, and speaking directly to those better angels.

To me this isn't even about walking on a high, lonely road, it's about not becoming a completely miserable piece of shit in my own life.

He's 100% right about this outrage being antithetical to necessary introspection. (The "do you want to be morally superior or do you want to win?" question is one I've asked many many times.)

im sure there happy with their investment dollars. Are you happy with the result of the record breaking donations to Act Blue? Seems like a shit ROI to me.

I don’t disagree with anything except your premise that the D agenda was rejected. There was some poll out in the last days of the election that strongly supported the idea that Harris’ policy points were significantly more popular that Trumps. But, a large portion of the polled people had no idea that they were hers and a lot actually thought they were Trumps.
I agree that the DNC is inept. I agree that people like Schumer need to go.  I’ve gotten several texts from organizations I have donated to in the past asking for money to “fight” Trump’s agenda. I responded to one just to make myself feel better by saying “Not until y'all can pull your head out of your ass”.
I know no one read it but it made me feel better.

Yeah, you’ve lost me because your response was actually the point I was making.  Geez, has everyone just gone stupid?
