the senate’s structure and rules, even beyond the filibuster, are a extremely wise mechanism that provides stability.

That's a problem.

My wife is organizing a self defense class for women in the area.

She lived in Oakland, and i don't mean the Berkely part, I mean crackhead Oakland. We've traveled to many countries, taken public transportation late at night, and seen some shit. She's tough and street smart.

Now she's concerned for her safety in fucking West Austin

Great job everyone; hope you're happy. Enjoy the Oligarchy.

Yeah.....my daughter and her friends are pretty boldly responding "your cock, my Glock."

Misogynist men are emboldened as fuck (and why wouldn't they be?  We just elected a sexual predator president (I mean....he actually brags about it), and the mouthpieces around him are often as bad or worse).  They are openly threatening and taunting women in public and online -- emboldened by the election of DJT.  But emboldened shitheels, acting purposefully to terrorize half the population, well....that will SURELY end well.

Good for her.

I can see our gender war only worsening.  If I'm a woman I'm going to be real particular about selecting a partner in an world where I can't get adequate healthcare or justice.  Why risk getting raped or impregnated by some lame Jabroni with no empathy, social skills or class.  Men were already prone to violence, infedility and complusive decisions.  And we tend to be gross.  I might earn more than him way because I work harder, am more organized, and not lazy.  Why fucking bother unless he's a perfect fit and a 10 of 10 in all ways.

The male youths are fucking stupid inherently and always way developmentally behind thier peers. And the are just digging in deeper with toxicity.

In High School I supported the chick's who were pushing Amnesty Intl or Abortion rights because I like and respect women. Sure I had selfish horny reasons.  These kids are flying Trump flags at football games.  I'd absolutely tell my daughter to avoid those assholes; even if they joke about Trump for the Lulz; it's a stupid move. Have fun being Incel.

You can keep telling yourself this, but you're simply wrong. I'm a left-leaning liberal who's fiercely anti-authoritarian, and if you couldn't deduce that from my work you haven't understood a word of it. I'm not an ideologue. I mistrust ideologies. I've never met an ideologue who wasn't prepared to deny a bit of inconvenient truth to keep their world view intact and I include ideologies with which I find myself in broad sympathy. On the other hand, I am an idealist. I believe in human beings. We are undeniably capable of terrible acts, but the evidence is that we are astoundingly collaborative and mutually supportive, especially when times are hard. My values haven't changed; what's changed is the political landscape. What was once my natural home (a pragmatic centre-left party focused on dealing with economic disparity, championing social liberalism and equal rights) is now dominated by an illiberal, identity-based strain of politics I consider elitist, harmful and out of touch with the day-to-day concerns of regular people, particularly women (and I've still lived more than half of my life as a non-wealthy woman, and some of that time was spent in poverty). There are women with whom I make common cause in the TERF wars I disagree with on other things. Within obvious limits (sucking up to literal Nazis) I don't particularly care about their personal politics. The reality is that there's currently an assault on women's rights unparalleled in my lifetime, and it's coming from both left and right. If ever there was a time for women across the political spectrum to come together, it is now.

By the old left/right metrics (which I accept have been massively disrupted) I am left wing. Not hard left, but definitely left of centre. However, I believe the left in the West has taken a dangerous and self-defeating turn, embracing a form of identity politics that is fundamentally destructive to values the left once respected, especially freedom of speech and fundamental liberalism. I'm not a tribal person, so I haven't embraced those positions because 'my team' has decreed that's what we're doing now. Yes, I've received a lot of blowback from the left for not meekly accepting the new ethos. But principles aren't dictated by other people's approval. I was never in this to feel part of a team (one of the undersung benefits of being a true introvert). So I won't be running to embrace a new team to feel good about myself, because that would be just as insincere as pretending to believe in the identity stuff to keep myself in with the left.  j.k.

I renew my (serious) pledge to never vote for white men. I renew my statement of a desire for a law to keep white men from running anything for 30 years (minimum).

I renew my expectation that a few dullards will respond, "But Roma, there have been bad, terrible women," as though that somehow balances the weight of history.

We should rename this thread from "truce" thread to "totalitarian" thread. I haven't really seen anything aside from angry and gleeful partisanship, and the trumpers refuse to even engage on what trump said he plans to do

The trumpers just want acknowledgement of the win and nothing else

This thread is a great example of why no truce will ever exist and why your relationships of convenience and circumstance have led to this outcome.

All praise the war machine. The only truce will be as we all are forced to look upon the raging fires of our society in full collapse because we couldn't give up our money and lifestyle to actually fix what's broken.

Bill Gates out here saying Billionaires are fucking things up and he should be taxed 67% of his wealth, then does literally nothing to stroke a check to the US Gov because then the other billionaires will not do that and he will just look like a dumbass.

Its laughable to say the filibuster and antiquated rules of congress are good. We live in a world with actual equivalents to Supercomputers from the 2000s in our pockets. The ability to process and send information has never been faster not just to individuals, but for policy makers. Instead of focus on making great policy with measurable and predictable outcomes which can be simulated and shown in their full complexity using statistical, computationally intensive modeling we have a bunch of idiots running around writing bills that don't do shit for anyone then arguing about whether or not to even vote on the legislation.

What's wrong with our country is everyone is too focused on what they believe the right way to do things is the important part not where we are going.

The biggest economic boom right now and one that is propping up the majority of spend in the largest sector was not even mentioned a single time in either candidates or any of the Republican or Democratic platforms. I've been told it's because people are too stupid to understand AI, computers, technology, industry, economy etc. It's really because if you focus people on shit that truly doesn't matter like abortion, immigration, fascism whatever they don't look at what's really happening.

I've thought about it a lot, and there's no use in a truce on a sinking ship. If you abandon your principles now because you want on the life raft you have been fake the entire time.

Everyone knows the right answer and everyone is too afraid of doing the right thing, because the right thing involves unwinding a lot of really bad things we have done and it requires repaying all the debt we have incurred both fiscally and morally as a society.

The entire US economic apparatus is propped up by junk debt that will never be repaid and profits that will never make sense in the ponzi scheme of all ponzi schemes.

Sorry, but more than 50% of the population of the United States being told that they don't fucking matter is kind of a big deal. As a man, you may not give a shit, but that is because it isn't your right to bodily autonomy or privacy being taken away.

Actually, I LOVE that he shared this.  Because it points out how the idea of a "truce" is lost.  Because for him, this is NOTHING but a "gotcha" to talk about how the left has it wrong on women.

And ZERO acknowledgment of how fucking dangerous, harmful, and violent that the approach the right has taken with women.  "Your body, my choice," and Andrew Tate-style "women are to be dominated and owned," and literally electing a man who is a bragging serial sexual predator who BRAGS about "grabbing them by the pussy," well......that's fine and dandy.  The right doesn't have ANY problems with how it views and treats women.  And we certainly don't have to worry about the problems they might have because hey, they aren't in power and aren't actively pushing policies on that front, right?

What a fucking joke.

This is what people don't understand. It's how obvious no help is coming and the Democratic party is completely worthless.

You wanna know what would affect change immediately? Every woman who disagreed with this quitting their job. Wanna know the damage that happens when a pandemic like shift in employment happens because people are fed up? Catastrophic. You know how fast change comes then? Immediately.

Everyone is too much of a fucking pussy to actually stand up for what they believe in because bitching about it and crying foul for how bad you feel everyone else is easier and you get to feel like you are part of the fight when you are just a fucking cheerleader in the stands.

@PenelopeWitherspoon quit your fucking job and leave the country. Quit talking about it. Stop clutching your pearls and organize a movement of people willing to do what's right to shape the world you know needs to exist.

Maybe I have a different outlook on this because I made all these moves already. If you don't believe I'm about it and not just talking about it then you haven't been paying attention to what's in front of your face. Doing the right thing is hard. It's getting harder.

Don't talk about it. Be about it.

You know, I've personally experienced three women weeping at the outcome of the election. These are women that I know well. At first, I thought the extreme reactions were partially induced by alcohol and partially over dramatic no matter how real and dire the actual meaning of the election is for women.

I can be slow on the uptake sometimes when the abstract becomes immediately real.

Forced pregnancy. Loss of medical privacy. Withholding of medical attention for pregnant women for fear of violating abortion laws. The embrace of a sexual molester and rapist as leader of the country. Open talk about wives having to discuss and reveal their votes to their husbands. Even on the other side, the suggestion that you could hide or lie about your vote to your husband recognizes a not uncommon hierarchy/patriarchy that I'd assumed was gone.

All of that adds up to a very bleak statement about the cultural status of women in the United States. The too often statements of "would" around here illustrate the casual denigration considered acceptable in public discourse under the guise of guys being guys.

I'm again slapped awake to the righteous outrage of women .

I'm guessing that some will sneer at this post as white-knighting. Women don't need my white-knighting. I write observations about citizens.

Many women will likely cringe at this post because it does carry the sound of the protector. Again, I write observations. Maybe they're errant. I don't think so. Women are viewed as chattel by a sizable part of our population that, shockingly, includes other women.

We need to do some re-thinking. We have a white man problem.

First, I never threatened to quit my job. In fact, what was stated that I can negotiate an ex-pat package and move to the UK (working for a global trading firm has its perks). But I haven't because I am ok to stay and fight (which you must have missed). And I was going to be ok financially no matter who won, and unlike over a third of American women, I live in a state that just enshrined my rights in its state constitution. What I am angry about is men, who have enjoyed a lot of privelege, telling women that we do not matter, which is effectively what you stated upthread. That is why the truce thread is stupid.

And also, you have no idea what I have been active in doing. I might not live in Texas, and am safer in NYC, but that also puts me in a better position to help those that need help. I have been traveling for work, but once I am back, we are going to our founding partners, who loathe Donald Trump and everything he stands for, and pitching some ideas to them. With some backing, I think we can do some great things.

You can't, you gotta let the motherfucker burn down far enough to where even the most stubborn Trump loyalists realize they made a terrible mistake, painful as it will be.

Trump loyalists will never believe that they made a mistake. That's why I place the question mark beside Brisket's pos rep. I'm surprised he doesn't see this as he's been so accurate about this whole plane crash.

You may see some swing voters waver, but you won't see Trump loyalists do so because they see only the reality the hate engine and Trump lays out for them. The Juden lib socialists and the illegals will be responsible for sinesterly thwarting God's chosen POTUS from restoring greatness.

We know this movie.

Respectfully, can the people that are super cynical about his thread just refrain from posting in it?

I know it's gonna be hard to have a sincere dialogue with partisan posters, but let the ones that want to try have a chance. There are plenty of other threads to vent on.

No, because it's impossible to moderate because the people posting in here aren't doing it in a spirit of trying to talk a solution out.

Ah yes, the concepts of a plan.

Why don't you stop attacking people who very much fucking get it and aren't dismissing that women's rights have been trampled on and are being threatened to be taken back decades. Be a part of the solution not part of the outrage cycle.
