Since when is “effective” the goal? You do what’s right because it’s right. Brisket is acting like a puerile psychopath. We should hold ourselves to a higher moral standard than gleefully cheering on genocide because a few voters made a bad choice. Especially when the victims literally had no part in the voting at all.

I mean, for fuck’s sake. Stand back and think for a fucking second about the position Brisket and the other butthurt buffoons are advocating here. It’s monstrous. They’re not merely hoping the Michigan voters get deported or hassled or suffer some other comeuppance at the hands of the fascists they helped gain power. They’re literally cheering on the mass murder of innocent human beings half a world away.

If you don’t find that way over the red fucking line of morality, then something inside of you has broken and you need to look in the mirror.

Edit: Not you, specifically. The editorial “you.”

Yep.  Costs on everything are gonna go way up.  That's what happens when you deport the people who do all the work.

But hey, brown people are scary, I guess.

I believe that authoritarians rely on this. You need a divided populace and I mean a REALLY divided one like we have now in order to ascend to the highest position of power.

So here we are with millions of people who are about to get four years of messing around and find out moments they did not believe would be coming their way. Four years of prices on goods climbing ever higher and a populace that will continue to divide further apart. This is how authoritarians and their underlings gain and latch onto power. I can look at this from the perspective of a white male and I could say that “I’m white so the worst of it will not come to me solely because of that.” That part will prove itself to be true. However, the part of me that realizes a whole bunch of people got taken in and hoodwinked with false promises and, at best, half truths will be the ones affected the most. That part is not cool, but here we are. Sometimes you have to learn hard lessons and they will come at the expense of the person you voted for that does not care one iota about you nor did they ever.

The Senate is the wild card.

The House will be an issue too. The GOP is much more MAGA than in 2016, but their House majority is a fraction of that. It's unlikely to expand significantly if at all. It's been very dysfunctional over the past two years.

Maybe they all fall in line with daddy but 4-5 defections is going to stall legislation, and it's going to continue to be really hard to square the interests of swing district reps with MAGA purists with a likely Democratic-leaning midterm on the horizon.

Fuck yes it's monstrous.  “The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters.”

It's all going to happen, it was going to happen anyway.  Except now, we have the added layer of the people who most DIDN'T want it to happen....having voted for the choice who is most likely to make the thing happen.  And no worries, the timeline just dictated that the pro-Palestinians got called up first.  Everyone is going to get their turn on the FAFO tour.

It is a time of monsters....and the people who should be most worried about the monsters (pro-Palestinian, hispanics, women, poor white people).....voted Team Monster.  "Higher moral standards" are not a thing.  The path of history has chosen to bend in this particular direction, and bend hard.

Most of us aren't cheering on the mass murder of innocent human beings - we're just ready for the idiots of this country to realize that there are consequences for their actions.  We hoped that it wouldn't take Gaza being wiped out, or family members being wrongfully deported, or tariffs put in place that light inflationary fires, or a hundred other things that are going to happen to make it clear, but that's not the world we live in.  The problem is that if the Democrats get in the way of any of this at all, the GOP is going to point at them and say, "See??? They fucked it all up!!!" and it will work - AGAIN (as it always does).  So we're at the place where all there is to do is sit back and say "As a reminder, this is what's going to happen - you voted for it" and then when it happens, repeat over and over again "We told you what was going to happen, and you voted for it.  Don't vote for them again because they will fuck you over and over again."  Maybe it will work - but probably not.

Oh, I have no problem with schadenfreude or karma. The only thing keeping me sane this past week has been the Leopards Eating Faces subreddit. I’m all for seeing those who selfishly chose fascism suffer the consequences they thought would only fall on others.

But what a select few maniacs on this board advocate is not schadenfreude; it’s bloodlust, directed at innocent victims who never had a choice to make.  I like to believe we’re above that, and I do believe most of us are. We’re angry, sad, and afraid, sure. But that doesn’t mean we should follow the emotionally fragile crybabies among us down the path to inhumanity.

I’m glad I bought this year, but I also now almost a year into a 7 year fixed period of an ARM that has no first adjustment cap, other than the total rate cap. So that could get a little bit panicky in 4 years.

Congressional resistance? Just more faces about to be eaten. Trump, with Elon, has the power and money to control 2 branches of government. The other may slow things down for a few days here and there, but there’s no stopping this now.

i think it will take a couple years at least, to bring the DoD under heel. At that point there’s no precedent for how bad this gets.

Arab American voters who voted Jill Stein instead of Harris will FO.

Trump is appointing Elise Stefanik as ambassador to the UN.

Quote

A longtime Trump ally, Stefanik is a staunch supporter of Israel and has also been critical of the UN for what she argues is a lack of sufficient backing for its war against Hamas.

Since Hamas's 7 October attack, she has become one of the most outspoken supporters of Israel in Congress, garnering national attention as she led congressional hearings about university presidents' handling of protests on college campuses.

The military will answer the call of their CiC if the issue is extralegal, which secession is. Total non-starter.

I think/hope that the Brisket's on this board aren't actively cheering for the extermination of innocent people to teach a lesson to some Americans who voted against the best interests of said innocents.  I think it's more an attitude of  "this extermination is actively happening, and voting for the fascist will ensure the job is finished, while a vote for the alternative offers some hope that it'll end sooner rather than later - so all you fucktards threatening to withhold a vote or vote 3rd party better come to your fucking senses".

And since they did not, the "I told you so" part of us is looking forward to telling them "you voted for this, go fuck yourself".  Same with the undocumented people who went maga and are now on the doorstep of being deported.  The ugliness in all of us, myself included, is taking up a lot more space in our brains post election.  Anger/Lewis Black is manning the controls for the foreseeable future.

I'm think on the world stage. In the 1860's you had to be pretty close to another army to attack it, and even then, the damage was limited. With a compliant DoD, Dotard will be able to push a button and incinerate Belgium.

Maybe this isn’t the thread for it but bear out my musings.

My wife is Turkish, so I travel to Turkey frequently. One thing that’s always bothered me about being there is that the culture encourages selfishness. Everything is about trying to get one over on everyone else. From their behavior in traffic to ways to cheat regulations and rules, everyone is out for themselves. My BIL is in construction management. He said if the law required 20 rebar in a concrete pour, they’d do 15. If it called for 15, they’d do 10. I’ve said in the past while I was there that it’s extremely hard to recover from a culture like that. That outlook is the only way they know how to think about issues.

I’ve often wondered how a culture devolves into an attitude like that and I think we’re there. Trust me, I’m full “leopards eating faces right now” as I’ve stated earlier in this thread. People who cared about others have been beaten down to the point where they’re callous and actively enjoying the suffering of others. It’ll be interesting to see how our country evolves from here.

This.

No culture is 100% "me," 0% "we," or vice-versa.  But one of the things -- maybe THE thing -- that ultimately made this country and culture broadly succeed was finding a balance between the two.

On the one hand, we have long had robust protection of basic individual rights against the possible overreach of the state.  The degree to which we have had that is truly incredible.  Seriously, compare it with even other "enlightened" nations.

On the other hand, we have had a community-oriented perspective since our founding.  Read De Tocqueville.  It carried forward for a long-ass time.  We had notions of the common good, and they were woven into our social and thus political fabric.  All the way down to how we do business with each other (generally, sellers offer a fair good/service, and a buyer pays the agreed fair price.  And we had a robust and all-in-all, remarkably fair legal system to adjudicate any disputes.  The Rule of Law matters there, a lot.  Everyone is held to the terms of their deal.).

We had something approaching a 50/50 "me" vs. "we" balance.  Sure, it moved back and forth from time to time.  And yeah....we had to deal with the embedded poison of slavery and institutionalized dehumanizing racism (which...spoiler...we never really dealt with), but we had some balance.

Now....we're careening headlong towards the Turkish approach.  And it's not unique to Turkey.  A lot of cultures are like that: each side in any transaction, business or social, trying to get one over on the other guy, treating everything like a zero-sum game instead of a mutually beneficial process that helps everyone.  What do those cultures have in common?  Well, they generally aren't as wealthy as ours, or advancing as quickly as ours has been.

Turns out, a robust social contract and culture of mutuality yields incredible COLLECTIVE dividends.  Whereas a "fuck you, I got mine" culture with minimal social contract lowers the shit out of the overall dividends, providing inordinately high dividends only to those people best able to act completely outside any rules.  And - this is important - we've decided that's the country and culture we want.  The model that goes fucking backwards, and creates a shitload more "losers" with only a handful of "winners."  It's dumb as fuck, but then....so are we.

This.  The legislative branch won’t be bothered with. Trump will do what he wants even if he gets impeached monthly because the senate will never convict him.  The legislative branch is dead. The executive will do whatever it wants.  It’s, ironically, Dick Cheney’s wet dream.

I read an article today where they interviewed day laborers at Hom Dipo.  They were all for Trump because he would only deport the bad people and then they would have more work.  One guy that had citizenship voted for Trump. Lucky bastard got on board the boat last year with citizenship and pulled the old ladder up real quick.
