I read an article today where they interviewed day laborers at Hom Dipo.  They were all for Trump because he would only deport the bad people and then they would have more work.  One guy that had citizenship voted for Trump. Lucky bastard got on board the boat last year with citizenship and pulled the old ladder up real quick.

This is so fucked up

My wife is Turkish, so I travel to Turkey frequently. One thing that’s always bothered me about being there is that the culture encourages selfishness. Everything is about trying to get one over on everyone else. From their behavior in traffic to ways to cheat regulations and rules, everyone is out for themselves.

You just described the culture of every place south of the Danube. And by extension, New Spain. Not that north of the Danube is any great prize, mind you, they're just more prone to sticking to regulations whether that's building Autobahns or shooting prisoners.

In New Spain the Hapsburgs knew exactly how to run it. They knew that unwatched officials would cheat and gouge, so they routinely sent over Visitadores to hobnob, share a bottle of wine, and if it turned out you stole too much, back in chains on a slow boat with usted.

Sounds like the Turkish government has the same self-awareness-- if they want 15 pieces of rebar, they probably say 20 to get that to happen.

Yep.  Which is why messaging needs to be sent with "what would a stupid, vindictive person voting against their own interests do?" in mind.  Any winning electoral strategy has to find sufficient groups to shit on.  Because the message of "hey, maybe we shouldn't hate people, maybe we should all poor oars and try to succeed together" is pussy loser talk.  "Elect me, and I'll crush those Flemish bastards who are stealing all of your beloved pet weasels" or whatnot is the only winning approach.

Unify against, not for.  It's the only play.

Bingo.

The United States "aspiring to be like that" is the problematic new trend.  We used to make fun of backwards-ass authoritarian "papers, please" countries.  We used to make fun of "fuck you, I got mine, so what if I cheated?" no rule-of-law having countries.  Now, those are our fucking GOALS.

I would put the southern "dueling culture" US states as the northern-most edge of South America But Settled By English. When I lived in Mexico I was getting along GREAT because it was like they'd taken my extreme Deep South hometown and recast it with Mexicans for a Televisa version. It was the same machine once you sat down to drive it.

Northern US was all upstanding until they started showing "The Sopranos."

Federal Government (for my whole life so far) has served the role of the Spanish Visitador that you call on to root out the worst of the good-ol-boyism. Shomari Figures out front shoulda told ya. You have to keep them on speed-dial, one visit doesn't do it.

That's why immigration policy gets more and more fucked; they can't vote so fuck em.  And they might not vote for me so relegate them to so lower cast were they pay into our economy and tax system without guaranteed benefits in return. And a spectre of fear of deportations daily.

I have a friend that loves fishing and I really want to take down to the coast on my boat.  He's to scared.

We met in 2003.  Thats not a functioning system.

Was talking w/ a childhood friend of mine from Minnesota this past weekend. My sisters and I grew up next door to his big family (9 kids) and his mom often babysat the 3 of us when my single parent dad was working late. These are the bluest of the blue collars. Mechanics. Printers. Firefighters. Healthcare workers. All have been working since they were teenagers and never stopped.

I asked Mark how they were handling things up there. His mother (80) is terrified. His dad (82) has been an insulin dependent diabetic for over 40 years. So are several other members of their now extremely large clan (both in size and girth). When his mom discovered that one of her sons and 4 of her grandsons voted for Trump she broke down in tears. When she asked her son how she could vote for Trump his justification was that a Mexican restaurant that opened up one block away from the restaurant his wife worked at as a shift manager had cut into her restaurant's business so much that they cut her hours. She was having to pick up a second job at Target to make ends meet. Those brown people with their delicious carne asada and frijoles are just making it unfair for Minnesotans who want their bland shit served the same way every day.

So instead of accepting that they might need to work harder in the face of stiff competition, they voted for people they thought would just deport the competition. How American of them.

You gotta consider day labor anywhere.  I'm in construction so I deal with a Lot of dull knives and racism.  Northern Mexicans look down on Southern Mexicans who look down on Guatemalan.  Black Haitans or Venezuelans are really hated.  It's dumb tribalism and " my situation sucks, but I'm above those guys.

We watched a century of poor whites vote against thier own interest just to stay a step above black people ; and didn't expect the same other people?

We are provencial, and tribal and selfish and our system only encourages that . We need to counter that.  He's gonna still your cookie mate memes aren’t landing.

I spent three hours talking with the Hispanic owner of a Fiber installation company one day. He had fascinating stories about the difficulties of the different nationalities working together. The Mexicans were a pain in the ass to the central and south Americans for sure. He preferred hiring them over Mexicans.

We always pull the ladder. And then the next group does a well.  It's one of our cornerstone unwavering principles.  Scots, or Germans, Or Italians Poles Irish Mexicans, Vietnamese...

"I'm American as anyone from Tennessee".   That scene from Lonesome Dove was casually masterful at showing working class uneducated thought process.  It's stuck with me.  They all worked together, died for eachother but carried serious views of thier own superiority despite the close relationships.

Get your kids ready to pray!!

Trump's campaign has outlined a plan that features prayer in public schools, an expansion of parental rights in education, patriotism as a centerpiece of education and an emphasis on the "American Way of Life."

Survival in less civilized times required the help of neighbors and townspeople alike. You thrived together or you died together.

The dumbed down of society should provide the military with lots of bodies, since there'll be less options with the rising costs of education.  And before the tradesmen peeps talk about the rise of a blue-collar workforce, that's a shit load of work.  True there's money to be had, but if there was learning and effort going on, they wouldn't have voted against their chances of overtime and for rising costs of living and declining benefits.

What are they gonna do when they get to the love thy neighbor verses and supporting the poors?  I mean, let's not go hog wild on learning the teachings of the gospel, unless we're subbing Christ with Oligarchs.

I got news for you, I prayed, in a no-fucks-given public school system, and we also had a nice lady come around and tell Bible stories with cut-out figures that would cling to a felt board.

Then we were allowed to draw Bible scenes, so I busted out a magnum opus of Samson holding a Philistine soldier by the neck and smashing his skull with the jawbone of an ass.

It was way better than my rather pedestrian drawing of Moses murdering the Egyptian slave-driver. The other kids that day drew floating basket baby Moses n stuff. Naw.

I've heard about this felt board but can't remember what it was called. Maybe a Methodist thing; Baptist?

Being in Texas I was raised a Papist (and freaked the fuck out when a Klan rally marched past my elementary school.)

I like that Reform Daddy, maybe We need to get us some of that

The lovely and amply endowed Mrs. Gillette in my third grade Fort Lauderdale class would do a Bible reading every morning in our public school (Stephen Foster Elementary - where btw we also sang ‘way down upon the Suwannee River’ in full minstrel vernacular).

Coming from Iowa I was briefly confused at her references to the Woah of Nawthurn Agresshin.

I’m not sure if it’s great again, but I think Trump is taking us back to 1963.

At least that was 3rd grade. I had an *8th* grade teacher of *American History* teach the War of Northern Aggression and she referred to the Confederacy as “we”. As in, “We never lost a battle within the borders of Texas”.

It makes a big difference just because you don't know what the fuck you are doing doesn't mean I don't.

There are threads for discussing different aspects of what is going on. This thread isn't a Trump specific thread it's a thread about intended consequences for people who voted for bad things to happen to themselves.

There's election discussion in the election thread and there's Trumps America to discuss the transition and policy.

This isn't the general catchall thread for whatever stupid shit you want to talk about. Go talk about it in another thread. This should not be a fast moving thread and the posts in this thread shouldn't be a bunch of opinions or discussions.

I am completely with you.  There's absolutely nothing I can do to prevent what is going to happen to the Palestinians.  I did what I could to prevent it.  But I'm still going to lament it.

At the same time, one may plausibly hope that there is something constructive that comes from people seeing the (very, very foreseeable) consequences of their voting behavior.  And perhaps that would provide some benefit going forward, which is worth cheering for.

It may be true that @BrickHorn is sitting there wringing his hands over the fate of the poor Palestinians.  And meanwhile, @Brisketexan is maniacally finger-tenting while hissing "excellent."  And they have the exact same impact on what is going to happen in Palestine.  When the time for deciding what was going to happen in Palestine was upon us, they were on the same side.

But that time is gone, and they're both now equally impotent.  The hand-wringer's hand-wringing over the finger-tenter's sinister grimace is a bit stupid.  As is the finger-tenter's supposed glee, I suppose.  I imagine they're both coping mechanisms.  I suspect neither will be terribly effective in the medium- or long-term.

That's why we have alcohol.

Quote

The day after Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election, Afghanistan’s Taliban offered its congratulations to the American people for “not handing leadership of their great country to a woman.”

Taliban leaders expressed optimism that Trump’s election would enable a new chapter in the history of U.S-Taliban relations. They noted that it was Trump who suggested a new international order when he inked the February 29, 2020, Doha Agreement between the U.S. and the Taliban. That deal cut out the Afghan government and committed the U.S. to leave Afghanistan by May 2021, closing five military bases and ending economic sanctions on the Taliban. This paved the way for the U.S. evacuation of the country in August 2021 and the return of the Taliban to power.

The Taliban prohibits girls’ education past the sixth grade and recently banned the sound of women’s voices outside their homes.

...

In September, as the Taliban enforced new rules on women in Afghanistan, they also began to target Afghan men. New laws mandated that men stop wearing western jeans, stop cutting their hair and beards in western ways, and stop looking at women other than their wives or female relatives. Religious morality officers are knocking on the doors of those who haven’t recently attended mosque to remind them they can be tried and sentenced for repeated nonattendance, and government employees are afraid they’ll be fired if they don’t grow their beards. According to Rick Noack of the Washington Post, such restrictions surprised men, who were accustomed to enjoying power in their society. Some have been wondering if they should have spoken up to defend the freedoms of their wives and daughters.

One man who had supported the Taliban said he now feels bullied. “We all are practicing Muslims and know what is mandatory or not. But it’s unacceptable to use force on us,” he said. Speaking on the condition of anonymity because he feared drawing the attention of the regime, another man from Kabul said: “If men had raised their voices, we might also be in a different situation now.”
