Until they hit 40 and the ugly bomb kicks in. it is real. Warts emerge, hips get wider than their Yugo's, etc.... But that is when they know how to make sogandolma and shit. So get a young woman, eat her mom's food, then when she is about 35 tell her you side with a different ethnic group and if her uncles don't detesticle you, home free. head to next valley and rinse and repeat.

Go east to the Balkans. They know their food and every valley is different. Don't hurt that each empire has kicked there ass at some point leaving a legacy in the food, especially the soups and bread.

And they walk everywhere so the fuckers stay in shape. Plus in the rural areas you want to be warm better chop wood.

Some of the best food I've had was in Croatia.

In fairness, the leopards are just looking at the menu and ordering. We don't get the first course until Jan 21

Now all the upper-class people brag about how they were raised poor. (scroll up for several examples)

As someone who actually grew up poor, most of the people who brag about being raised poor were actually raised working class or lower middle class. I guess everyone wants to be the hero in their own "bootstraps" story and "I grew up poor" sounds better than "I grew up in an average American working class family, where we paid for our groceries with our own money and I never had to worry about what utility was going to be cut off when I got home from school"

Yep.  I definitely grew up working poor. Neither of my parents ever broke $10/hour.  We had breakfast every day at my grandma's house because otherwise we wouldn't eat.  We weren't homeless because we rented from my other grandparents and rent was like $150/month.    I mainly went to college because I had a burning hatred for my childhood and poverty.

For those few anti-Trump GOPers, it's a passive way to undermine Trump without having to publicly do it and get primaried.

lets be honest, if there is a person with a bigger personal life issues than Matt Gaetz it's Mark Robinson.

I am surprised Tim Scott got the cold shoulder though, but that's probably explainable due to his position in the Senate.

She doesn't appreciate the hilarity of insisting to write the same off topic shit over and over. One day, maybe we'll be as good as TexAgs at wearing out traditional jokes.

The cabinet appointments thread has been pretty good. We got wrasslers, sexual predators, a guy with brain worms, and a mess of kooky TV hosts taking the reins.

I'd managed to work down to that level for quite a while.

Didn't like it, but there are plenty of safety nets for a suburban white boy. I knew I wouldn't go under. A taste of that life was plenty for me. The stress on working poor families must be enormous. But we are coming up on the December to Remember Lexus Sales Event, that ought to cheer 'em up right quick.

Exactly.  Robinson meets the minimum criteria for being a Trump appointee and for SOME reason hasn’t received one.  We are all shocked too!

Same. I was living broke from 22 - 23 or so. Parents had to cover my rent for me for a few months. It was enough that I learned how to budget and live way below my means. this was 2002 - 2003ish. I don’t know if living below your means is even realistic for many people anymore.

Excellent point.  Maybe the takeaway is that the "average working class family" economic situation in the 1970s or so that most folks here are describing....looks a whole lot like what people describe as "poor/struggling" today.  A lifestyle of 1) never really being food insecure....but eating super-cheap shit (baloney sandwiches from a cooler on any road trip, because we didn't have "stop at a restaurant" money, mom shopped with coupons and was frugal as hell, so the fancy stuff you might have liked rarely made it into the grocery basket), 2) modest housing (apartment/cheap, small tract house furnished sparingly), 3) few "luxuries" (most vacations were indeed a weekend in Galveston or somesuch), etc.  Nothing wrong with that life.  BUT today.....that sort of life is "we've gotten a raw deal and are getting fucked" life to most Americans.

You sprung for the 79 cent items?  Richie Rich over here.   I stuck with the 59 cent items.

yeah I started typing $0.49 I think there was a series of years early 90's where it went from like $0.49 up to $0.99.  those were the times. sigh.

I started college in 1990, I believe the regular bean burrito was $0.59 back then.

I was never poor. My last semester in college I needed to save money for a trip that summer. All my money that I earned doing coops was tapped out after paying tuition.

My part time job at Starbucks $ had to go to cover rent and food.

So I subsisted on take home Starbucks pastries that were to be thrown out, free food that was available at the engineering building if a company was doing an orientation or something, and mustard tuna. Yep. I’d literally just cook tuna on the stove after adding a ton of mustard.
I’d forgo breakfast most days.
I dropped 20 lbs or so in that semester.
I was able to do this knowing it was temporary and I was poor on purpose so I’d get to go to Europe…. Which is not being poor at all.

Would not recommend

Since we are being honest and all, since when has DOTarD cared about personal life issues?

Are you really surprised Tim Scott got the cold shoulder? Be honest now.

First, lets not call this mustard tuna. I'm not saying you didn't do it, and I'm not saying you didn't eat it. But lets not give it a fucking name. Somehow that normalizes that kind of atrocity.

Second, I'd actually reccomend most young people have an experience like that, for perspective.

If you are talking about canned tuna, you know that stuff is already cooked, right?  Didn’t need to spend the money on the energy required to heat that and the mustard.  Every nickel saved is another euro beer ordered.

Point taken, the only thing I am aware of is I believe Trump campaign completely distanced themselves from Robinson after the online posts showed up.

Yes, Trump was pretty positive on TS around convention time.

So if anyone is in Miami, there is a place called El Carajo that has unquestionably the most legit paella I've ever seen outside of Spain. Seriously over the top good. But that is only half the story. It's changed a lot since I first learned of it, but originally it was wild as hell.

I found this place during a sailing event on Biscayne back about 15 years ago. I drove down from Virginia, and a girl who was sailing another class asked if I could tow her boat down for her. So when my crew and I got down there, she took us out to dinner as a thanks with some other sailors. One of the local hosts picked a place that did real large pan paella, you call in advance, tell them your party size and roll in.  She text us the address and we head out. When we get to the place on the map, all I see is a gas station, so I'm like shit, we are in the wrong place. As soon as I start to drive off, I see her come out if the gas station quicky mart. I think to myself, wtf. So we park and go in, and literally through a gas station store, past the motor oil and the pork rinds, is a doorway to the most majestic wood paneled room with hundreds of bottles of wine. It's absolutely mind bending. Turns out the best Spanish restaurant in the states was in the back room a Miller Mart.

These days they actually took over damn near the whole building so it's not as wild. Still phenomenal food though.

Will have to give this a try next time I'm down there.  My mom and brother live nearby (in the Gables) and the pizza place next door is pretty good (we've ordered from there several times).

59, 79.... 99  Jingle will be in my head the rest of my life.

Summer I turned 16 we spend endless hours at the nickel arcade fueled by a couple $0.59 burritos.   Living life on like $3 or 4 dollars.  $5 was living large and $10 was baller territory.

I remember 50 cent coke, and gas for about 80 cents. Played Resident Evil 2 Remake and the shot of the gas station. I was thinking how expensive it was back for other states out of Texas.

$1.06 in 1998 (when ResE2 came out) is $2.04 in 2024 dollars, and I've definitely bought gas at $2.10 this year

Society has changed. Much more designed to get in your pocket than it was in then. Every time I pay for a car wash, yard guy or oil change, I can hear my father in my head telling me I’m wasting money.

My parents literally had the same furniture my whole life. I never wanted for anything growing up. But, it was a different mindset. Eating out was Luby’s. We didn’t get cable until 1980 and there was no way my parents were going to pay for an extra phone line for me to chat up my friends.  Most of my clothes were hand me downs.  We took driving vacations and stayed in roadside motels.  I remember eating pimento cheese sandwiches out of a cooler at roadside rest areas. My father performed tasks around the house that I would have no clue about how to do now.

When my parents passed, they were sitting on a very large sum of money. They could have had nicer things but they really didn’t feel the need.

This is me, oustide of the parents having a chunk of cash left (they aren't dead, and they won't). They were raised by parents who went through the great depression. That will change you.

We are a nation of privelege, and excess. Which is fine, except I at least go out of my way to recognize and appreciate my situation. Not fucking burn the whole thing down when life doesn't meet Instagram Expectations.

That place is great. I left my wallet there one time on a business trip the night before I was flying home, and once I got it back I had a lot of fun going around like “I left my wallet in El Carajo I gotta get it, I got, gotta get it.” But at the time it was very stressful.
