Do we have a moving out of Texas thread? It's going to take some time to be in a financial situation for us to do so, but we will have much more flexibility in a few years and are interested in options. Would like a good place to raise kids, outdoor activities nearby and decent diversity. Where would you send us?

It’s on page 2

I saw saffron at Costco last weekend for 16.50 per gram.  I know it’s expensive but never priced it before to know how that price compares, but does the spice contain the seeds?

It shouldn’t. Only the flower’s stigma and styles, ie the crimson parts in the image.

No, it is a bulb. Growing is easy. Harvesting the saffron is a bitch and it takes a lot.

Every time I'm in Texas, I'm asked when I'm moving back. The last time the conversation came up, it was on the heels of everyone discussing what kind of generators they bought for their house for the next power failure. All living in the "energy capital of the world."

This might be a generational/social circle thing but we got a whole lot of "take me with you/wish I could" from peers and a lot of confusion from older folks when we decided to leave.

I don't think I'll leave, but if I did and I was going to stay in the states I would go to Colorado. If shit goes down, it's harder to kill rebels in mountainous areas. In the meantime, I like to fly fish and snow ski.

Northeastern New Mexico for me.  Same beautiful vistas and outdoor activities as CO, but the roads all suck so the bad guys can't get to you.

Trump appears to threaten Hamas with 'all hell to pay' over hostages https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c62757dd55no

Quote

Without mentioning Hamas by name, Trump posted online the same day: "Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied history of the United States of America."

I hope the Pro-Palestine folks who voted for Trump are happy.  Many of us said throughout the campaign that Trump's idea of ending the war is not the same as theirs. Hard to understand how they couldn't see it.

Honest question, does anybody know: when comparing spending to other countries, does the amount we spend spending on sports, band, proms, etc?

I happened to catch a little bit of Kris Boyd's "Think" last night on NPR:

The politics of school vouchers

Despite hard evidence that they [don't] work, school voucher programs are still gaining steam. Josh Cowen, professor of education policy at Michigan State University, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss why "school choice" is such a hot-button issue, the influential people behind its growth, and why this push is signaling distrust of public schools. His book is "The Privateers: How Billionaires Created a Culture War and Sold School Vouchers."

One of the takeaways from his research was that there is a direct correlation between spending and improvement of outcomes with public education (from test score performance to later life successes, health, and reduced crime); whereas while school voucher "competition" does have a history of marginal improvement, if the money diverted to vouchers was instead directly investedto the schools it would increase the improvement exponentially.

When you understand that vouchers are about 1) improving the outcomes for the most fortunate (kids from families who could already afford private schools), including by increasing the funding to those schools (Tuition of $10k plus voucher for $5k = tuition of $15k now, and 50% more revenue to the school), and 2) fucking over everyone else, because harming others is even more important than helping your own, it all makes sense.

And I say that as someone who went to private school right up until my first day at UT.  An education my parents scrimped and saved to pay for, AS THEIR CHOICE.  And I also say that as someone who believes in the common wealth and the common good, and who has always wanted our public schools to provide a good and sound education to all people.  Because I don't know if y'all realized this, but all of those kids who go to public schools today?  They're going to grow up to be our neighbors, and our future workforce, tomorrow.  Would be nice if they weren't incompetent idiots.

The interview is worth a listen.  I don't suspect there's anything in it you didn't already know or suspect, but hearing confirmation from someone who's devoted decades to researching the whole thing was quite interesting.  Also, he started out as a proponent for vouchers, but over time seeing the results (and then the subsequent bastardization of the process through expansion of programs to support more and more private schools) led him to become a vocal opponent.

From a promotion for a recent talk he gave at Princeton:

Quote

In The Privateers, Josh Cowen lays bare the surprising history of tax-funded school choice programs in the United States and warns of the dangers of education privatization. A former evaluator of state and local school voucher programs, Cowen demonstrates how, as such programs have expanded in the United States, so too has the evidence-informed case against them.

This thought-provoking work traces the origins of voucher-based education reform to mid-twentieth-century fears over school desegregation. It shows how, in the intervening decades, a cabal of billionaire conservatives supporting a host of special political interests—including economic libertarianism, religious choice, and parental rights—have converged around the issue of education freedom in an ongoing culture war. Through deliberate policymaking, legislation, and litigation, Cowen reveals, an insular advocacy network has enacted a flawed system for education finance driven largely by dogma.

Far from realizing the purported goal of educational equity, privatization is failing students and exacerbating income inequality, Cowen finds. He cites multiple research studies that conclude that voucher programs return poorer academic outcomes, including lower test scores on state exams, especially among students who are at greater academic risk because of their race, their religion, their gender identity, or their family’s income. Continued advancement of these policies, Cowen argues, is an assault on public education as a defining American institution.

“US President-elect Donald Trump has issued an apparent warning to Hamas, threatening ‘all hell to pay’ if hostages held in Gaza are not released by the time he returns to the White House on 20 January.”

This from the guy who told the audiences at his campaign rallies that most of the hostages are already dead.

We used to have textbooks when I was a kid that would be used for several years.  My guess is that the move to workbooks which lack any kind of instructional component but are replaced annually or issued more frequently (2-3 per year for the same subject) are also cost drivers in addition to adding more software/hardware to schools.

Shocking they refused to vote for the successor of the guy from their area and instead voted for some silverspoon felon, prolific bullshit artist with a track-record of fucking over people like them, and it didn't work out in their favor?

Man, if only there had been some way to tell that Trump wouldn't honor his end of the deal when he bought your vote...  Some sort of precedent, or some sort of national archive of things that have happened in the past...

I think there’s a misunderstanding of how GOP politics tends to operate.  They aren’t trying to use vouchers to improve education.

At least in Texas, it’s an intermediate step on the way to use public funds for private religious schools and the proof that you only need a couple of committed west Texas billionaires to run a state.

Yeah, if you listen to the interview he goes over that as well as the SCOTUS decisions eroding separation of church and state.
