But isn’t that most voters? It’s like with the tariffs. It’s the one policy Trump has consistently harped on, yet millions pulled the lever believing “he’s not actually going to do across the board tariffs, just targeted ones”

And now we have brewing trade wars with our biggest trade partners in Mexico, Canada, China…

This thread (IMO) is about people who voted for Trump facing the consequences of their decisions, regardless of whether they were dumb or lied to.

I want the tariffs to go through, his universal tariffs such a clownshow that it will ONLY raise prices and fuel inflation, the laughable idea that clothes manufacturing will return to the US is so god damn ridiculous, even if by some miracle it does happen it will be shit low wage paying jobs or robots doing it.

His legacy is going to be a lot more mixed now, but certainly his policy achievements rank up there with the best of our Presidents, especially considering his single term.

But to put him in bottom 5 is laughable

Quote

Buchanan's leadership during his lame duck period, before the American Civil War, has been widely criticized. He simultaneously angered the North by not stopping secession and the South by not yielding to their demands. He supported the Corwin Amendment in an effort to reconcile the country. He made an unsuccessful attempt to reinforce Fort Sumter, but otherwise refrained from preparing the military. ... His failure to forestall the American Civil War has been described as incompetence, and he spent his last years defending his reputation. Historians and scholars rank Buchanan as among the worst presidents in American history.

Sound familiar?

The absolute worst part is that I don't see us moving away from it, there was too much god damn push back towards populism immediately after the election, I like Bernie but he needs to push harder and harder, the corpocrats are still in control.

Raising minimum wage was a hallmark of middle class growth that the Biden administration did not hammer that again and again and again and again is downright criminal.  This has the added advantage that Republicans are allergic to it so they won't copy a dramatic increase in the minimum wage.

This is the universal truth about the US economy, the rich will be rich and everyone else will provide them with a service, manufacturing is gone finito fin, Chips act is fine but everything else is just a waste of time, make sure those service jobs pay well and you will have a happy population, let these service jobs enter into poverty and you have the hallmarks for desperate upheaval.

A big problem with Biden is that he was never the most effective communicator in his best days and in his advanced age, he's even worse. I don't think he's senile but he sure as fuck looks and sounds like from time to time. They couldn't put him out there in front of the media to spout off his accomplishments because he could no longer effectively do that.

Yeah, what part was it Biden wanting to be presidential and what part of it was it his advanced age, but he needed to hammer things, his student loan forgiveness was crushed by the courts, A) it should have been a more universal loan forgiveness, B) keep fucking hammering the point go on all cameras angry about how the government is against the people that only he was on their side.

Getting cockblocked by the courts and congress can STILL be a win if you message accordingly if you go populist. You also have the luxury of trying again and again just in different ways maybe it is no longer loan forgiveness but tax credits 100% proportional to the loan amount. Keep this in the news!

That said it should have been doubling the minimum wage, try universal loan forgiveness but the former is far more popular and republicans would have always opposed it but he could have done double it on march and rebuffed, 2.1x on April and rebuffed, 2.2x on May and rebuffed, 2.3x on Jun then maybe Republicans learn they are getting murdered in the polls and pass this.

As to why did he not do this? because one of the legacy metrics by presidential historians is "getting along with congress/passing shit" that was his north star, his historical legacy. Getting rebuffed by congress on populist stuff was against his goals, and now we all are going to pay for it.

Jesus Fucking Christ. Biden didn’t do this. Biden can’t unilaterally cut stimulus checks. Biden can’t magically instill the people with civic pride or understanding. Biden can’t make us a communal, compassionate people. Biden didn’t make us this fucking racist, ignorant and stupid. Biden did fine with what he had. He’s an 8-4 coach working with 1-11 talent

The problem is our dumb asses. We saw 4 years of bumbling idiocy, blatant criminality and a btrayal of our norms and traditions topped off with a million or more extra dead than a competent admin. and, after a breather, re-upped.

Stop blaming a person or a handful of pols for systemic problems nothing but facing calamity can fix.

“Hey remember the guy who tried to overthrow the government when he lost? 4 more years! Maybe this time an angry mob will finally hang the VP to prevent the next president’s votes from getting recognized”

40 years of right-wing hate machine propaganda isn't disappearing overnight.  Heck, they don't even bother pretending to care about any actual policy with consistency anymore, because their audience is so invested with the identity of being a republican.   No irony is noticed at all when their puppet cozys up to dictators while simultaneously alienates democratic allies.  No irony noticed by their constituents about the nepotism of their party or the massive payouts, or forcing the government to patronize their private business or gain foreign contracts.   Not a fucking peep about it.

And of course, solving the "corporatocracy" is going to take more than presidential action.  Probably going to require 60%+ in both houses.

But, the next Dem does need to demonize those who prevented things like loan forgiveness and associate them with Republicans.  It's not a lie.

The reason why this particular issue is different is that Harris was against the sale too.  So these guys would not have gotten what they wanted either way.

Joe Biden was a president obsessed with his legacy, obsessed with civility.

My theory on why he was such a putz: historians traditionally graded Presidents on many metrics, one metric his ability to get things passed through congress or congressional relationships, points are deducted if his legislation does not pass.

The absolute easiest part about populism is using defeat as an advantage, paint your enemy relentlessly as out of touch, as against the worker, that your guys are the only ones on his side, and then try again, and again and again, show that you are willing to fight. If Republicans block a minimum wage hike, try again next month, and again and again and again. Why don't they do this? because...

Democrats are allergic to populism, even milquetoast Bernie Sanders style populism but that is the only path forward to fix things, we need more than 8 years and we are not even getting 4 years to fix the damn courts, they are filled to brim with ideologues leading to a corrupt potential eternal dictatorship. and Joe Biden is there twidling his thumbs going ahh shucks you guys Republicans are being meanies!

I will always consider him a failure I don't care about his soft landing, I don't care about his build back better, I don't care about his CHIPS act, I don't even care about his victory in Ukraine, and lets not even dwell on his failures like the Israel palestine war. His only job should have been preventing THE RETURN and I sure as hell will never forgive him for this. And will always argue he is bottom 5, Trump is at the absolute bottom scoring 0.0.

I'm making a joke. Jubilee is when a ram horn is blown, and all debts are forgiven.

The Jewish jubilee came every fifty years, and slaves were freed, and land ownership reverted back to the original landholders. The Catholic Jubilee was pure grift. A year to sell indulgences.

Edited to add the Catholic Jubilee happened every 25 years, with the option to have an additional Jubilee whenever it was (financially) necessary.

You are just making shit up.  He was a man who grew up in and believed in the system and the functioning norms within the system.   He behaved in such a way to some detriment.   And once again, you are blaming him for people electing Trump.  There was another viable candidate the first time and the third time.  It is not the Biden's fault people touched the stove top and got burned.  He cared for us the first time we did it, he fixed our wound and told us a better way to test if it was on.  But we ignored him and put our hands on it anyway.   It is not his fucking fault, you dolt.

Look man I am an "actions and results" over "contents of their hearts" kinda dude, if you want to argue that Biden was a kind soul and jesus like human being then it is not my place, I will not even disagree.

But I judge Biden on the results and there was only one result I cared about, one existential threat, maybe Trump turns senile tomorrow maybe all the fears are put to rest, but that is it Biden's entire legacy hinges on the end results of a Trump presidency, how quaint that his legacy is not even his own.

My sister is a Biden cultist but I told her then what I am telling you now, anyone in the democratic debate could have beaten Donald Trump during COVID+Race protests+record unemployment+stock market short circuits, but the real test was if they could prevent him from returning, I worried Biden was too soft and I ended up being right despite me doing everything in my power to be proven wrong.

Biden is suffering from some challenges which impact his speech at the very least.   This would be like blaming Colt for getting injured and Mack not going out on top.  It was Harris who had him on the debates and it was her job to communicate facts, to a population who wants to be lied too.

Maybe, I never thought his speech impediments were a problem, he was god damn president he could stutter like crazy and still be respected, the problem was more about the energy or the desire to be a bully pulpit president, I already mentioned time and time again what could have been done keep the popular stuff in the news every day bend the republicans to his will. That was not his style he did not want to humiliate anyone, end result was defeat.

I am tired boss, I can't hear him speak anymore because the softness enrages me.
