I posted earlier that CA has gerrymandered their political districts to be 83% Democratic for Congress even though the state as a whole voted only 59% Democratic for POTUS.

Would you find it fair if Texas did the same for the GOP?  I lived in Parker County for 20 years.  It was about 85% Republican.  That was the county "community of interest".

So, why not make the entire state of Texas mirror that?

Bozo would call that a great way to represent the "communities of interest".

I don’t understand this post, but Parker County is getting fucked. Weatherford should be the capital of a mostly rural district (the 17th) that contains all of Parker County and stretches includes west through Mineral Wells and South through some of the Big Country. The way it used to be.
Instead, about half of Parker county sits in the 12th, including Weatherford. Unfortunately, it the 12th contains western suburbs of Ft Worth, along with most of downtown and the Mid Cities, and thus the bulk of the population of the district. Weatherford was peeled out of the 17th to add Republican ballast to the partisan mix. Consequently and predictably, the representative from the 12th is a lifelong citizen of Ft Worth, with deep roots in Tarrant County, Weatherford and Parker county are a distant afterthought.

No, you haven’t. Instead you just keep repeating that they should match, not why. For example:

you have to try to find the highest correlation between citizen political views and representative political policies.  Sucks that parties tend to fill that criteria, but here we are.

No you don’t have to, that’s not how our system works and the parties do not do that.

Tell me your plan to apportion each state/county/city/rural area to ensure that the majority of each state/county/city/rural area of generic state X gets representation that most closely aligns with their views.

The goal is not and has never been to design districts to get representation that “aligns” to “views.”  You think that’s the goal for some reason but refuse to answer why you think that.
The goal is to represent people in places, who have things in common (and these are called communities of interest). If you do that, it captures their views to the extent they are relevant on any given thing. You do that with districts designed around places with geography, economic and spatial interests in common.

Actually, I think it's aerospace engineering, or mechanical or similar, IIRC.  Accordingly, he's not dumb most likely.  But a product of a probably slightly deficient education in humanities (most engineers suffer this, some make up for it with external reading, others don't) and a product of an echo chamber of his own.

Here's a Venn diagram that is representative of the various "communities of interest" in generic state/county/city/rural area X.

Tell me your plan to apportion each state/county/city/rural area to ensure that the majority of each state/county/city/rural area of generic state X gets representation that most closely aligns with their views.

What this diagram reminds me...   There are very few famous women with E cups.   Lost of Cs, Ds and DDs.   But so few Es and then it just seems to go to Gs and Hs.

OK.  Are districts drawn/redrawn every presidential election cycle or are they based off the census?  Since I already know the answer to that, then you know that using the most recent Presidential election is not as representative as using the previous election cycles.  So your comparison is flawed at best even with only a cursory analysis.

Second, look into how California assigns the redistricting.   Source

Quote

California is one of eight states where redistricting is fully done by an independent commission. In seven states, the new congressional districts are being drawn by Democratic-controlled Legislatures, while Republican-majority Legislatures are drawing them in 20 states.

So you singling out California for using an independent commission to redraw districts, while overlooking that Texas' uses a single party (in power) to draw it.

I will refrain from going on further at the moment.

Aren't these the same people that want to secede from Oregon altogether?

Maybe they should just pull themselves up their bootstraps.

Yeah, for all the shit we give aggy, at least 30-40 years ago, their science/engineering schools were pretty, pretty good.

Something happened in their ME department in the mid-late 80s that sent a few ME students to UT as upperclassmen.  They didn't miss a step academically and it was notable because it sent us a very attractive gal, who were in short supply around ETC.

Sobering.

It occurs to me that it's not because it hasn't affected them yet so much as life already kind of sucks there, so what's a little more.

“As he nears the conclusion of his 18-year leadership tenure in the Senate, McConnell expressed concern about the direction in which Trump’s influence is steering the party. He argued that Trump appeals to those who feel left behind in a system that rewards success, suggesting that the former president provides a narrative that excuses individuals for their lack of achievement. “He’s tapping into the sentiment of people who haven’t reached the same level of success as others, offering them a way to rationalize their struggles by casting blame on those who are thriving,” McConnell explained.

The senator also lamented the fact that roughly half of Republican voters now align with Trump’s views, moving away from the party’s long-held priorities such as free trade and comprehensive immigration reform. “Unfortunately, about half of the Republicans in the country believe whatever he says,” he added.

Sorry Mitch, this is your legacy.  No running away from it.

I know it's fun for us in the peanut gallery to point and laugh, but I would love to see some big names democrats courting farmers to come to their side right now. Talk about how important farming is to this country, it is literally our country's roots. Guarantee strong farming legislation to help ensure all crops are bought and made use of somewhere in the world. Reiterate support for USAID purchases and the common good they provide domestically and abroad. Increase tax breaks for small farms under a certain size, etc etc.

What if they could flip Iowa, Kansas or Nebraska for a few cycles? These sorts of cataclysmic changes in politics can lead to odd realignments, and in this case could result in the Dems becoming the party of Farmers if they try. The Rs are already buying all the big money and corporate votes the can via tax breaks and the dismantling of oversight agencies, might as well use the purse to try and lock up other groups if possible.

I have REPEATEDLY stated that the way they do those stupid districts sucks.

I'm not arguing for fucked up salamander districts.

But, "communities of interests" are not these homogenous entities that you seem to be making them out to be.  Parker County/Weatherford DOES have those rural interests.  But, it's also VERY conservative and votes about 80% Republican.  They have many interests in common with NON-rural conservatives.  "Communities of interest" aren't ONE THING.  They should have Republican representation because that's the policies the people there support.

I'm all for drawing the districts in a much less retarded manner, BUT ensuring that the majority of the people in each district gets the representation that matches their views.

Now, if you want to expand the number of people in Congress, you could probably get a better representation of the smaller "communities of interest".  But, with only 38 people representing 31.2 million people, you can't subdivide the districts up to make everyone happy.  Couple that with the requirement that there has to be a certain number of majority minority districts and that complicates the equation.

But here’s the problem- Weatherford lost their represention on anything other than national issues so the party could deprive the slight minority in Ft Worth of any chance of representation on national issues, precisely so these “views” you care about could “align” to the dominance of Republicans in the state, and THAT is why these leopards can eat faces with impunity.

But dumbfuck rurals will turn on foxnews, lap up the next flavor of the culture war, and pull the GQP lever come fall of 2026.

Fuck them.

Bernie isn't even a democrat now, he has mostly identified as an independent, except for when he ran as a D in 2016. He knows about helping the working class, the little guys, and he would have absolutely beat the shit out of Trump in 2016 if not for the Democrats party leader fuckery. The whole country would be so much better had he won in 2016, even if he didn't run for re-election in 2020.

I know Democrat ideals would include those programs to help them, but if you want to break the spells of Fox News and rotten Facebook feeds, you have to go beat them over the head with it. And you need to do that right now when they are vulnerable, because it's the only time they will possibly listen to alternatives. That's when some of them may question themselves and look for another solution.

I just think about the Hakeem Jeffries quote of "you don't swing at every pitch" but ya know, maybe it's time to get in the fucking batters box? These people are going to be reeling for a few years, and unless the Trump administration commits to send them 10s of billions again, it isn't going to get better before the next election.

Peters’ job included replanting forests with young saplings, and he said he put in “100% effort all the time.” Supervisors were apologetic when they called to fire him, explaining that his name was on a list handed down by the federal Office of Personnel Management.

A follow-up letter contained the same terse message that was sent to at least four colleagues in Peters’ roughly 40-person office, and 3,400 workers across the Forest Service:

“The Agency finds, based on your performance, that you have not demonstrated that your further employment at the Agency would be in the public interest.”

Peters feels betrayed by politicians he helped put in office. He voted for Trump in November, impressed by his vows to bolster the economy and slow immigration across the southern border.

“If I had known that this was going to happen,” he said, “I wouldn’t have voted for him.”

https://www.greatlakesnow.org/2025/02/trump-firings-hit-great-lakes-sea-lamprey-program-michigan-forestry/

The news came in an email from the acting administrator of his agency. It said that it would not be in the “public interest” to continue further employment, citing his performance,

“For this reason, the Agency informs you that the Agency is removing you from your position,” the email further stated.

Because they are concerned about possible retaliation and a likely appeal to the Merit Systems Protection Board, the couple asked WTOP not to use their names for this story.

___

The termination is complicated by the fact that last November they supported Donald Trump when he sought the White House for a second term.

“I voted for Donald Trump. But this is not what I was expecting,” he said. “We didn’t think they were going to take a chainsaw to a silk rug.”

“The letters are willfully incorrect and to our belief in NTEU unlawful," Berman told NBC10. "They say essentially 'your ability, skills and performance do not make you a fit for federal employment. In addition, your performance is not up to par.' This is patently untrue. These are being all issued with the exact same wording to every single one of these probationary employees, whether they have just gotten out of training and had no performance metrics. Whether they have been here for almost their entire year and had very good performance appraisals."

“You know when he talks about government waste and all that, yes, I’m behind it,” McCabe said. “I believe there is a lot of stuff in the government that needs fixing. And that’s part of the reason why I actually wanted to work for the government, actually. To help change. Help change the things that are wrong in the world, you know? I thought that someone with his business acumen would have come in with a fine-tooth comb and actually found it instead of coming in with a wrecking ball and destroying people’s lives for no reason."
