For what it is worth, this is something I struggle with as well.   In the interest of the kids, I will still make an effort to see them.  But they don't seem to care to acknowledge that they continue to put my kids at risk and cause us unnecessary stress with their voting and while my kids appreciate the thoughtful gifts they recently sent, I am still remaining aloof.   I wish I wasn't so petty, but I suppose my exhaustion has made it easier.   They live in a different state but when I brought something up about how I was disappointed with how they voted and how it would create a greater burden on my family but they just defaulted to 'states rights' response, to which I responded it is funny how social security and medicare are not 'states rights' issues.   Imagine if Floridians had to pay for Floridians.

This is my greatest struggle. If it was just me, I'd deal with it. Probably see them less frequently and voice my displeasure when we were together.

The kid thing though is tough. Their maternal grandmother is no longer with us and their paternal grandfather is 79 and in a different state. It would be great for them to have a good relationship with grandparents. While they are (usually) good about keeping racist thoughts to themselves, I know those thoughts persist. Thinking they are "just" discriminating against a different shade of non-white isn't acceptable.

This is why, more than anything, I just want to have a sit-down to talk things out. It will probably make me angry, but just avoiding the subject altogether and pretending nothing is going on outside of our personal bubble is part of why I think I harbor so much resentment.

I’m not trying to trivialize your situation with the kiddos in my next comment, but you should get your parents hooked on an addicting game like Candy Crush or King’s Match. I noticed my parents stopped being on social media so much because they got addicted to Candy Crush and that’s all they seem to want to talk about now.

The time they would spend on Facebook or Twitter feeding misinformation into their minds has been replaced by hours of Candy Crushing. My mom was so hooked she stopped talking about Trump so I wouldn’t get annoyed and I would be more likely to send her free lives so she can keep playing. It sounds stupid but its remarkable how much less they ramble because they only want to play Candy Crush now like it’s their new obsession.

The irony of it is that what he wants is the exact opposite of how the framers wanted it- local communities in districts of shared interest elected state legislators, and they chose senators and presidential electors.  Not that the framers had right, but they recognized and were very afraid of subordinating local interests to the kind of pervading factionalism AWK seems to have baked into his idea of what an ideal world “should” be like.

Ironically, of course, the framers themselves quickly fell into factionalism and started gerrymandering to crush local interests themselves. Gerrymanding named for Elbridge Gerry, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The assumptions made by many of the framers turned out to be wrong. But we managed to still make it work until very recently.

If that young woman Ryleigh Cooper worked for the US Forest Service and had access to UnitedHealth plans through GEHA benefits, she had IVF and family building benefits already and just never knew about it. If she is on COBRA today, she still has access as well.

The Great One gets a not-so-great reception for wanting to Make America Great Again:

His poor, plasticine wife cannot understand why people are being mean and wants everyone to know that Wayne's feelings are really, really hurt. She writes:

"Your words mean the world to Wayne and his family, I have never met anyone who is more proud to be a Canadian and it has broken his heart to read and see the mean comments."

Gretzky is Canadian, a formerly beloved Canadian icon.

He is also full-on orange-dick-sucking team Trump.  Trump.  The guy who shits all over Canada, says we should conquer it, make it the 51st state, etc.

Being buddies with someone who shits all over your country is a great way to make the people in your country hate you, because you're a fucking traitor piece of shit.

Yeah, being elected honorary captain of the National Team while supporting the guy who wants to do away with the entire Nation, is surprisingly not a good way to endear oneself to the people of that Nation.

I mean she was obviously a DEI hire.  Can’t expect her to educate herself on her benefits or anything else apparently.

Some states kind of do this in a roundabout way with Medicaid. There was an article that talked about how some states claw back Medicaid payments using a federal law with respect to the estate (after death) and it was a decent read.

https://www.thegazette.com/health-care-medicine/iowa-medicaid-sends-4m-bills-to-two-families-grieving-deaths-of-loved-ones-with-disabilities/

Quote

Collection agents for the state of Iowa have sent letters seeking millions of dollars from the estates of at least two people with disabilities who died after spending most of their lives in a state institution.

The amounts represent what Medicaid spent covering the residents’ care when they lived at the Glenwood Resource Center, a state-run facility that closed last summer.

The bills are extraordinary examples of a practice called Medicaid estate recovery. Federal law requires states to try to collect money after some types of Medicaid recipients die. The point is to encourage people to use their own resources before relying on the public program. But some states, including Iowa, are particularly aggressive about the collections, national reports show.

It's not unlike the way some states bill prisoners for the time spent behind bars which leads to a mountain of debt that they cannot realistically overcome if they're ever released.

I got my haircut today by my longtime barber. He is a Vietnamese refugee who became a citizen in the 70s.  He is a huge Trumper, a non-critical thinker, but watches his Fox and OAN and considers himself extremely politically astute.   He will never vote for the Democrats because they are “close to being communist, and he knows all about communist from his time living in Vietnam”, don’t you know….

We’ve had a truce for some time where we don’t really get into politics. Today he wanted to talk about DOGE, and why it was good to eliminate the fraud. I told him the fraud was a lie, they just wanted to get rid of anyone who could stop Trump from implementing his project 25 plans.

He then switched to how terrible it is that people don’t get along because of politics.  Because he wouldn’t drop it, I told him it is no longer politics. We are no longer fighting about trickle down economics, or fighting about Middle East policy.  We have a pathological, liar, felon, rapist, con man - supported by white supremacists - who is destroying the efficiency and fabric of American government to an extent that can’t be cured if we ever get a Democrat back in.

He told me it was “ silly for politics to interfere with friends and family”.   At that point I’ve had enough and told him I no longer have anything to do with Republicans who voted for Trump in 2024, because they are fake Christians and false patriots who are actually traitors- and although I wish the upcoming American pain could be confined to people who voted for Trump, I am looking forward to lots of pain in rural and stupid GOP strongholds.   At this point, he was getting pissed at me, and said that I was brainwashed.    He doesn’t make much at his hair cutting, and his federal employee wife is the big breadwinner in the family.   He then told me his wife had to give five reasons why she should be retained, and she gave 15 so she would be kept.  I laughed and said she’s gonna be fired anyway, and told him to call up Trump on the line when she gets fired and explain why that was wrong.

Whelp, I was advised that I need a new barber.

I'm glad he was your longtime barber even if he will be no longer. The LAST thing I'm going to do when someone is holding a pair of scissors near my face and neck is open my mouth and talk politics, even if they continue talking aloud to themselves.
