I like y'all, but damn if y'all ain't some worrisome over-thinkers.

So what if coffee and mangos don't grow well in the USA? The USA used to expand, and it can do it again.

I'm talkin LAND-GRABS, son. Let all those Marines training at 29 Palms get some REAL training, secure the port of Manzanillo. Then some Army boys oo-rah their way up to Comala for coffee (and some surprisingly good bread and cheese,) while another division locks down the avocado plantations of Guerrero.

If the Mexican Military says boo, supplement their cartel bribes to look the other way.

Repeat for any other product we desire, Make the new zones "territories" with lenient immigration policies for people wanting to work in them.

Mango?

Dammit I’ve had it with the coffee disinformation. The best coffee beans on the planet are grown IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! The Kona region of Hawaii produces the best beans on the planet. Ethiopia, Colombia and a few other places are great too, but Kona is unmatched. Now, back to leopards.

Hawaii? Good, add Hawaii to the list of places we invade and annex. And make sure kids learn history and geography in school.

Maybe we can enslave the pensioners from Cleveland that moved there 5 years ago and shopped exclusively at Margaritaville for their new wardrobes.

Don't worry about checking your husband and having him apologize. Even though you are a woman, can't seem to draw a line from how upset she is and the fact that womens' bodily autonomy was hanging in the balance. What he said was the current equivalent of the N-word for women in 2024.

Question for our Surly Latinos—

If Mexicans/Latinos in America were anti-woman for a president, and those same Mexicans/Latinos love their home country and culture, then why are they so proud of Mexico’s first female president and how did she get elected?

that may all be good and well but where your theory fails is that i have imported a bunch of black and caspian sea sturgeon in order to farm my own hybrid and royal ossetra and they don't seem to be enjoying central texas drought weather...

similarly, all the pinot and chard vines i imported from Épernay and montagne de reims all died in my back yard this summer.

you of all people should know what this means. consider my face eaten.

I just want to point out there was not a major male candidate in the Mexican election and Sheinbaum was chosen with a plurality, not a majority, of votes in her party's selection process (rest were men). Also being AMLO's handpicked successor and all.

That's not to say your point isn't salient but to add context.

After the 2016 election I came to the rather self-evident realization that chaotic political trends produce asymmetric benefit. In other words, that whereas stable and more or less equitable politics in a Democracy tend to be slightly detrimental to a few and incrementally beneficial to most, chaotic and inequitable politics are incrementally damaging to most people and spectacularly beneficial to a few.  Duh!At that time, I made a conscious decision to hedge my bets accordingly.
Since then, if good things happen and it costs me a little, I’ll see that as a sort of tithe. If bad things happen and I benefit, I’m in a better position to take care of my family and fight the good fight.

Mexicans in Mexico are very different as a large population than Mexican Americans. IMO a majority (or at least a ton) of Mexican Americans have the "assimilate with whites and they'll think I'm white" mentality. That goes hand in hand with the "pull the ladder up behind me" mentality.

I had more than one of my wife's uncles talk to me like we're both white. It's surreal. I didn't feel it was my place to let them know but my wife sure did when she overheard one of the conversations.

There's nothing super complicated,  I just think about who benefits and put down some hedges (however small) aligned to how they benefit. The key thing is that the cost of the risk you take is a lot smaller than the upside if things go that way.
You aren't fucking anyone over, though. It's more like buying an umbrella (or for that matter a gun), just in case.
