I suppose I can see the confusion here.

Trump and his acolytes most loudly shat on immigrant criminals and I guess if you're an immigrant and not a criminal maybe you can miss that that was implying that most or all immigrants are criminals and in any event making a case against all unlawful immigrants.

It seems the single most insidious thing here is the thought that Republicans, and Donald Trump in particular, are good for the economy no matter what batshittery they propose.

I think that there are a lot of good public policy reasons to make it a tax credit. If you want to debate that it should be a refundable tax credit, I am open to the notion. Certainly a caregiver refundable tax credit would be better public policy than some of the other refundable credits.

The goal is to help the families who need the most help. The families who need the most help are the poorest, and thus frequently don't pay taxes. If you have an adult with disability, you likely making less money to begin with. Plus, stress of care is hard to measure and drains earning capacity.

Why not give direct payment for care provided?  This is already done by some states and works really well. Harris's plan would've given payment.

I don't think Trump's plan, if his administration acts on it, will help the people who need it the most.

Yeah, GOP is great for the economy, if you measure it by Dow Jones and number of private jet flights.

Democratic messaging needs to be

CORPORATE WELFARE PAID FOR BY YOU  --- 50,000 times per day, by every elected official and surrogate.

When they say what about 401k, Dems say 401k ain't buying my eggs today and with inflation it ain't gonna be worth nothin anyway

For all y'all who cheered on the move to the SEC SEC SEC but voted for Kamala -- it seems to me the Trump victory is a dildo of consequences.

After all, UT joined the SEC Confederacy, ground zero for MAGA fascism. UT made the bed with Trump-MAGA world, now we gotta lie in it.

The move to the SEC was a post-BLM alignment mandated by Abbott, Eltife, etc. Hartzell and CDC are lackeys carrying the water.

No surprise Quinn and Arch are Trumpers .... Quinn spewing out Jesus quotes in every post interview out front should have told ya. Arch from SEC world is the clue for him.

I would not be surprised to learn that 80-90% of the Athletic Department is MAGA, from CDC on down.  I don't know, but would not be surprised.

My interest in UT football is falling fast to near zero.

Non-Americans have long been perplexed by the American focus on sports. In the past, I used to say that sports was our tribalism. We had our fights between the lines on the field instead of in the streets.

Now that some people view politics as entertainment, I wish that the opium of sports was enough.

We all need diversions. Watching sports is a harmless one, but not an additive one. Additive diversions build value into your life. If you watch sports with a community it can be additive, but not as much as playing sports with a group.

I've backed off watching sports. I'm playing them more.

Definitely a big part of it I’d bet.  And lack of education, sadly.  Maybe some Stockholm Syndrome…

lucky guess…edit:

Stockholm syndrome (STS) is a theory that the relationship between a slave and a master can evolve into feelings of gratitude and positive regard. In the context of the African-American experience, some say that the relationship between slaves and masters in the US became one of dependence and childlike attachment. They argue that the educational system can help to reduce the effects of this relationship, but only if it reflects an Afrocentric perspective.

Let me preface what I am about to say with the fact that I am a veteran.

I highly doubt that a Trump administration could conduct an effective and well-thought out reform to the VA disability system, but it badly needs it.

The ridiculous range of "conditions" that qualify for disability benefits is embarrassing.  For example, if you use a CPAP for sleep apnea, that's an automatic 50% VA disability rating.  The standard for something qualifying as "service-connected" is a joke.  If you stumble off the sidewalk one night while drunk on liberty and sprain your ankle, that's "service-connected."

The percentage of people who spend their last six months of active duty going to multiple doctor appointments so that every possible condition is documented is straight up fraud, waste, and abuse.  A huge percentage of these conditions are a result of age and poor health choices, not the rigors of military service.

It is a system that is easily gamed and costs the taxpayers A LOT of money.  That sucks, because there are plenty of disabled veterans who need the support.  The average military retiree has a disability rating of 56%.  This just sucks resources away from those who really need them and it makes the system more difficult to navigate for those with legitimate disabilities.

95% of the people who do this justify it by telling themselves "hey, it's not me, it's the system."

It needs reform, but Trump's political appointees aren't the ones to get it done.  A lot of folks deserve to have their face eaten on this one because they gamed the system as much as possible, and others are going to have their faces eaten because any "reforms" will be ham-fisted and poorly considered before being rushed into implementation.

My uncle just went through all the documentation.  He was getting dementia and had a legit case from where/when he served.  My aunt, a retired education administrator in California, tried to help him navigate through all of the different doctor clearances and red tape.  He was finally approved a month after he died.  While she was angry, really she was just more sad.  I think she did receive a folded flag though, so he was given a military burial.  The system does need reform, but Trump isn't going to care since the wounded and POWs were losers in his book.

Jesus, dude, get a grip. About the dumbest thing you can do is assume someone’s politics and then hate them over your assumption. If you’re gonna hate every 18-21 year old male that makes a dumb decision, you’re gonna hate almost all of them. They don’t know shit about fuck. You think these guys have the time to study the issues and have an informed opinion? They barely have time for school. Their political opinions are undoubtedly similar to their parents. Lastly, if you were gonna tap out on being a Texas fan, you should’ve done it 10 years ago. Doing it during a golden era is just sad, man. Let the hate go, try to find silver linings, and enjoy the game.

Not that I disagree with your intention, but to clarify, only 30% of veterans receive any disability payment.  Your 56% award rating is for  those who receive disability.  That’s about $1k a month, so far from enough to live on.  According to the CBO, the most common award for Gulf War veterans is for hearing loss, which relies on a screening designed to weed out those trying to fake a disability.

I’m all for trying to dissuade illegitimate awards, but let’s not surmise this is some huge potential savings for the government or that it should rank highly in a hierarchy of systems in need of reform.

@Guadaloopy

I 100% agree with you both. I also am very familiar to the VA system. To me, VA benefits should be given to all who served without means testing. We WANT to care for our vets because they cared for us.

I used to be a great example of a unified health care system. That was back in the 1980s. The erosion begin in 1990s when we thought that one of the spoils of winning to Cold War was going to be no more wars so smaller military. Yeah, right.

The VA has been in a death spiral since. Unable to hire because poor pay so vets don't come so smaller visit numbers justifying further cuts in services. This splashed onto the scene in 2013 and 2014 with tragic deaths due to delayed care. And the response with the Veterans Choice program which pumped more money into the program initially but also allowed veterans benefits to be used at non-VA facilities. John McCain spearheaded the Choice program as a stopgap, but because our politics is broken, it was obvious that this would accelerate the demise of the VA.

Trump made it easier to go outside the VA for care in 2017, and his administration is going to kill the VA, which is bad. Veterans have special needs, and the VA had served those needs well. Another terrible decision for those who voted for the "face-eating leopards party" (FELP).

If trump, and by trump I mean one of his minions or handlers, decided to ‘reform’ the VA then it’ll just be to kick a bunch of people off it or reduce all disability by 50%.

That’s there reform. Close the border.  Reduce taxes. Eliminate departments. Fire a bunch of civil servants. They’re all platitudes. There’s no reform. It’s just elimination.
Easy slogans. ‘Easy’ actions. No real thought to consequences.
And his people love it and supporters love it bc they’re out for a pound of flesh and thinking through their actions takes time away from watching the game or staring at Tik tok.

People want action bc they construe effort or action with meaningful results.

There's a rule in the EU that (paraphrasing now since the IBC is enough for me) that a worker's desk can't be more than 10' from a window.  Remember that London on a latitude farther north than Nova Scotia so there isn't as much sunlight.

Of course, designing a building that way increases cost (more exterior envelope and larger floor plate) so you can imagine that ain't going to fly with the donor class.  Take a look at the proposed floorplan for Munger Hall at UCSB.  IIRC Munger was a cohort of Warren Buffet.  The good news is he's dead.

Feds popped the nation’s major producer in like 2000s. Muling fentanyl over the border is easier than organic chemistry.

regarding acid, was at a conference recently taking with a company that is studying lsd in a microdose, one time administration, for treatment of serious anxiety disorders. Cool stuff.

There is a group in GA and NC pushing to do trials of acid and mushrooms for PTSD. Not for people when they get out, but microdose for while active.

Interesting, I'm obviously pretty out of touch with procurement of acid these days. It was probably the easiest thing to score in the 90s.
