Tre with 12 at the half. he is just so silky. i’m struggling to compare him to anyone we’ve had recently, other than a taller, more athletic, and more disciplined j’covan brown. Tre moves like he was born to do this. gonna enjoy his one year here.

Not a bad comparison. Like if j’covan was combined with Jordan Hamilton, but then better than both haha

Only thing I'll bitch about this early in the season is defensive effort. Ohio State got every look they wanted (and made most of them) and HCU is not struggling to score.

Our 'Horns are going to have to ratchet up the intensity if they want to have a winning conference record.

Barnes or Beard would have won this one 72-45 for sure. Defense should be ahead of the offense at this point because it takes less time to gel on that end.

The same Beard who has given up 63 to Grambling?

The very same Saint Chris Beard

With a real coach this team might’ve good. As if they are mediocre at best.

They have zero defensive identity or scheme.

The 2nd game of the season is famously the best time to judge a team in the NIL area

so we can trash chris beard during his second game of the season, just not RT. yep, that checks out.

Just more deification of Beard who won by 3 against Grambling and gave up 63 points. But he’d  totally have this a 72-45 game!

kaluma looking good tonight.

We have flaws but I think we are going to be a problem once we get Mark back.

Johnson, Mark, and Kaluma is a damn good scoring trio. They will create problems for teams just from a scoring perspective.

the same chris beard who engineered the best defense in the history of kenpom during his third year at basketball powerhouse texas tech.

go ahead and find every coach whose first 8 years of his head coaching career are comparable to the first 8 years of chris beard’s. spoiler alert: you’re going to end with a “who’s who” of college basketball coaches.

there is no deifying of chris beard. he is a great college basketball coach and one of the elite defensive coaches in all of basketball. there is only acknowledging this or denying it.

Tre Johnson is already to the point where you’re disappointed when he misses a shot. you already expect every one of them to go in.

24-2 run for the Horns. that’s more like it. although it definitely begs the question as to why we played so drastically differently in the 1H.

Legit question.

How long does Beard get until you start questioning him as a coach? It's now 6 years since he's advanced out of the 1st weekend. I honestly thought his tenure was going to go better at Ole Miss but that is a tough place to win.

Its to early to tell what this team will be,

but one thing for sure, Terrys Halfcourt offense is not good. Hopefully if he stays he recruits top talent cause if he has to draw up plays we’re in trouble

Onyema can not play once conference play starts. We will have to go small when Shedrick needs a breather.

This will be the factor that limits us this season.

We needed to add an athletic 5 like Garrison. Shedrick is a borderline starter and Onyema shouldn't be getting minutes. This is also why I've been saying that Kent or Kaluma need to play the 5 in non-Shedrick minutes.

RT took over beard’s team, they immediately fell off and were not the same team for 6+ weeks, and RT still took them to the elite 8. absolutely no reason to believe bears wouldn’t have done that if not more.

beard is an elite cbb coach and there’s not really anything he can do to “prove” that at ole miss. he’s more than proven himself at SFA, TTU, and Texas. i won’t have any reason to change my views on him as a coach until he fails somewhere. if he fails at his next gig (because he can’t hack it, not because he self immolated) then i’ll have to change my tune. but i just don’t see that happening. his entire HC resume screams “elite”.

Offense is not the problem.

We scored 72 on Ohio State and probably dropping 90 this game. Without probably our best or 2nd best scorer. That's a ton of points in college and should win 90% of games.

I don’t disagree with a lot of that. But the problem is he’s not here anymore. How do we fix US?

to expound on this, and i’ve said this here before when discussing beard vs RT:

go look at any really good coach’s resume and he’s won everywhere he’s been. i don’t think there’s a sport on earth where coaching is more important than CBB. there’s only 10 total players (kids in this case) going against one another on a small court. coaching buys you more wins in that scenario than any other i can think of.

the really good coaches win everywhere they go, from the start to the end of their career. that’s it. that’s all they do. beard has won everywhere he’s been (in historic fashion at sfa and ttu, and was on track to do the same at Texas), while Terry has not. both of these guys are who they are. that’s how it is in college hoops more than any other sport- you are who your record says you are. so until Beard starts failing as a HC, i see no reason to assume he is not who his record says he is.

I'm not saying we are as good but Gerry's comparison of the Miami final 4 team is a good one IMO.

That team was very flawed (#99 in Drtg and really no size) but they had 3 or 4 dudes that could score at will. This is under the assumption we have Mark of course.

Great 2nd half handling business like they should. Went away from pick and roll and let the athletes athlete. It was better defensive effort too. Good job horns!

vinson comes in and immediately gets a swat that leads to a Tre triple. 28 for Tre now. and vinson scores on the hook shot! he can’t be stopped!

Got dam, Tre Johnson is amazing. But the game is practically ovah and he should not be on the floor.

Re: Onyema, given Shedrick's injury history, I've zero issue with Ze'Rik getting minutes in games like this. But once it gets down to brass tacks, I agree--he's only in there for fouls or if there's no other option.

Definitely better D. I was close to mailing it in after that first half.

reggie freeman with a pure stroke, and taller- that’s who Tre Johnson reminds me of. which is kind of an insane thing to say, but i think it’s true.

yeah, this team is not going to be consistently great, but if we jell we can absolutely go back to the elite 8. we’ve got some guys, and Mark hasn’t even played yet. this game will probably be the best example of how bad we can be and how good we can be depending on the day. when we’re good this year, we gone be real good.

hopefully we get to shoot 32 FT's in our Elite Eight game as well.

i would never compare anyone to jamal crawford in terms of handles, but Tre has that same lanky frame and ability to dribble low to the ground despite being a taller guard. man he has been impressive. i’ll say the same thing tonight i said last game: he’s actually been better than advertised.
