Tre Johnson

special.

and he’s been better than advertised. he’s already shown that he’s more than just a scorer. he’s silky smooth, he gives great effort on both ends, he’s got really nice vision, and he’s under control at all times. he’s easily our most polished freshman since KD. he’s the kind of guy who can lead a roster like this on a deep tourney run as a freshman. really looking forward to watching him hope for his one season on the 40. 🤘🏼

Tre looks to be moving in stealth mode . Makes it look easy.

he quietly goes about his business. Nearly dropping 30 a game.

I won’t be surprised if he gets 50 once or twice just for fun

I would be shocked if he gets 50. I don't think KD ever even scored 40.

I mean it could happen. Brandon Miller may have gone for 50 in like an overtime or double OT game?

*nah - looks like 41 was his highest and I remember that was a huge deal.

It's almost impossible in a league like the SEC. Any cupcake on your schedule you aren't going to be in there for garbage time.

Absolute stud. He’s working his way into the top five of an absolutely loaded draft. He’s a walking bucket. Great shot mechanics. Great range. Great handles. Really good finisher at the rim. Gets his stuff in the flow off the offense and doesn’t force anything. Good effort on defense. Way better than advertised.

I hope Beard is in on Tre Johnson #20 who is a sophomore out of Lake Highlands. Kid might be the most skilled sophomore out of Texas High schools that I've seen in a longtime.

I want to take this opportunity to break my arm while patting myself on the back and point out how I called this over 2 years ago.

ESPN's latest big board draft rankings

1. Cooper Flagg, SF/PF, Duke
2. Dylan Harper, PG/SG, Rutgers
3. Ace Bailey, SG/SF, Rutgers
4. VJ Edgecombe, SG, Baylor
5. Nolan Traore, PG, Saint-Quentin
6. Kon Knueppel, SG/SF, Duke
7. Egor Demin, PG/SG, BYU
8. Kasparas Jakucionis, PG, Illinois
9. Khaman Maluach, C, Duke
10. Tre Johnson, SG, Texas -Height: 6-6 | Age: 18.7 | Prev. rank: 14

One of the most talented scorers in the class, Johnson is taking on a huge workload at Texas, which has predictably led to some ups and downs.

A gifted athlete with an aggressive mentality, Johnson has shot the ball well from distance (43% from 3 on seven attempts per game) and been key to Texas' good start 921 points on 48% from the field). His mix of size and fluid athleticism in the backcourt makes him a difficult cover, with a range of ways to score from all over the floor.

The big-picture concern with Johnson's projection is whether his style of play will be conducive to winning basketball in an NBA context, due to the number of tough shots he takes, and bouts of tunnel vision and questionable decision-making. He's not adding much value yet on the defensive end to prop that up.

Johnson has displayed these shot-happy tendencies for some time, and it's unclear how it will translate in a situation where he's not given the green light to constantly shoot. His gifts are obvious, but teams will be working to figure out how his game scales down if and when he's not the focal point of an offense.

Their latest mock draft has him going at pick 9 to the Nets.

tre johnson is legitimately up there with kevin durant and jim krivacs as the best shooters in Texas history. his shot mechanics are damn near flawless, and with his height, length, and athleticism he can get his shot from anywhere. it sucks for us fans that we won’t get to watch him develop into a NPOY candidate over 2-3 years, but assuming he gets the proper coaching and continues to grow, he is going to be in the NBA for the next 15 years to come. he’s a seriously special player, the kind that truly doesn’t come along often. i’m going to really appreciate watching him as long as he’s here.

His scoring arsenal for a 19 year old is unreal. One of the best I've ever seen. He takes care of the ball and has pretty good shot selection for what he's being asked to do on this team. It also seems like he gets better as the game goes on which is a sign of maturity and BBIQ that is again rare for freshmen.

Leading the SEC in scoring on 45/38/87 splits (18.8 ppg).

He's a bit of a 2/3 tweener and doesn't defend or rebound past his frame - I think those are the main question marks at the next level. If he can become a replacement-level defender at the 3 spot to give coaches some lineup flexibility with him - like you said - he will have a very long career with all-star upside.

Jalen Green feels like a decent comp but Tre is a bit bigger and frankly much more polished already than Green was. He probably isn't quite the athlete Green is.

Tre’s draft profile, measurables, and stats aren’t that different from Klay Thompson coming out of college.

If he can get drafted by someone who will develop him as a defender, it will help his all around game. He is a very aggressive competitor, but it needs to be channeled.
