As I posted above, that is true of Texas. It is NOT true of Arkansas. They are bred to care. It's the whole point of this line of discussion.

That's where the disconnect is. It's what Sarkisian failed to grasp. Also bit Mack Brown's stupid ass in 2000 and in 2003. But Mack has never understood rivalry games. He's a fucktard.

I wonder how much that is still true now that 25% of the student body is from Texas?  Or do the turncoats buy in because they're bitter about not getting into the university?

Arkansas is a lot like OU - a lot of mouthing off and a lot of horns down and the "fun" type of hatred. It's an opportunity for people who don't understand it to get into an altercation and escalate beyond a certain point, but if you know what is going on and just flash the horns and move on with your life no one is going to attack you. We had a huge party on Dickson street and went out before and after the game. No issues.

I think that College Station this year is going to be shitty well beyond that. They can't help themselves they are going to be dicks beyond just smack talk.

Arkansas specifically has a LOT of kids(especially DFW) from Texas who have parents who went to Texas or colleges that aren't "Texas haters".

There are aggy parents whose kids can't get into aggy right away that go to Arkansas.  They buy in immediately.

There have been some notable statistics that I have come across in the week of preparation leading up to the Texas-Arkansas game in Fayetteville this Saturday.

Of course, the biggest thing is this – Texas remains in the hunt for the SEC Championship and at the end of the day, that is the only stat that will matter for the Longhorns.

However, as we eagerly await kickoff, let's run through some of the numbers that will go into this game.

***

Andrew Armstrong (WR1) vs. Texas Corners

I have 'WR1' in the title of this segment because not only is Armstrong the best wide receiver for the Razorbacks, but I think he will be a first team All-SEC wide receiver at the end of the year. Armstrong, for as much or as little hype as you have seen about him, will be the best wide receiver Texas faces this season.

At 6–4, the former DeSoto native is in year two at Arkansas after spending a season at Texas A&M-Commerce.

On top of that, Armstrong has received 8+ targets in every game this season and has eclipsed 135 receiving yards in four different ballgames already. He is as legit as they come and will test Jahdae Barron and Malik Muhammad this weekend.

Oddly, and for all the targets, receptions and yards that Armstrong has racked up, he only has 1 receiving touchdown on the season. I can't explain it other than bad luck, but Texas would surely like to keep it that way.

***

Ball on the Ground

I came across this stat with Gerry Hamilton as we were preparing for this week's State of the Program episode.

Arkansas leads the country in fumbles this season. The Razorback offense averages 2.5 fumbles (both lost or recovered) per game this season, ranking 134th out of 134 teams in college football.

On top of that, from the quarterback position alone, Arkansas has fumbled 14 different times this season per PFF – Taylen Green has 11 fumbles and Malachi Singleton has put the ball on the ground three times himself.

There should be ample opportunities for the Texas defense to take the football away.

***

Flags on Flags on Flags

This might not be a fun statistic for this game. But expect Saturday's Arkansas-Texas game to look like a Kevin Mar-called game.

Neither team has been good in the penalty conversation this year, with Texas especially having struggled as of late.

100. Texas (6.9 penalties per game)

105. Arkansas (7.1 penalties per game)

In the last three weeks, both teams are bottom fifteen in the country in penalties per game, averaging north of eight flags against.

Texas is 92nd in penalty yards per game and Arkansas is 110th.

***

Pin Your Ears Back, DL

For as athletic as the Arkansas quarterbacks are, that has not prevented opposing defensive lines from having success in the sack game.

Only two teams are worse in pass protection than Arkansas in terms of sacks allowed per game – Mississippi State and Oklahoma. Texas combined to have 11 sacks against the two of those offensive lines earlier in the season.

Most Sacks allowed per game by SEC teams:

134. Oklahoma – 4.6

122. Mississippi State – 3.2

116. Arkansas – 3.1

106. Auburn – 2.8

103. Kentucky – 2.6

Texas sits tied for 69th at 2.0 allowed per game.

***

One Last One...

Arkansas has allowed 881 yards passing over its last two football games.

A second consecutive big game from Quinn Ewers and that should silent a lot of pundits.

This is good stuff.

However, CJ also didn't know that Houston had two airports, and showed up to the wrong one for his flight to Meatchicken.   Lulz.

The narrative from many in the CFB media this season seems to be that everyone that Texas plays is GREAT before Texas plays them, and only after Texas beats them these same people say, "Oh yeah, that team that Texas just beat, Texas only beat them because they suck & any team can beat them, not because Texas is any good," and that QE was beating up on sucky teams.

So we'll nuke piggy, and the CFB media will report that piggy sucks.

I'm still waiting for the same thing to be said if Texas wins the MNC this year: "Well, hic, hic, Texas only won the national championship this year not because they're any good, it's because, der, der, EVERYONE ELSE SUCKED, so Texas only won by default, blah, blah, blah!"

No, seriously, is that actually possible?

it is possible.  they have to go to Blinn for year, similar to the UT path through UTSA/UTA etc.  Some don't want to do that and just want to go straight to a 4 year big SEC school.

Hard disagreement. I also was at the 2004 game. We had full bottles of beer thrown at our heads on the way into the stadium and narrowly avoided multiple physical fights with hillbillies who can’t read. Fuck those people and fuck Fayettenam

I was also there in 2004 and while I’ve been to a dozen TX-OU games and probably five UT-Aggie games at college station, the only time I’ve been nervous for personal safety was 2004 Arkansas.  Went to pee and waited in line and some dudes wouldn’t let me use the bathroom.  I was close to pissing myself so was thankful a few Arkansas fans told the pricks stopping me to let me piss….but entire time I’m at urinal, I’m looking around waiting to be pushed.

Usually while at urinals, I just look around to compare johnsons like everyone else, right?  Right?  Right?

we also had police escort back to tailgate area and they told us to watch out for flying empty bottles of jack.

One could say the POTUS was a tricky dick!

Actually, the idea to move the game to December was ABC executive and sometimes broadcaster Beano Cook. It was the Centennial Celebration of college football so Cook and ABC sports executive Roone Arledge wanted a special game to celebrate the occasion. Arledge convinced Arkansas coach Frank Broyles to move the game with the promise that President Nixon would come to the game and present a trophy to the winner, which later turned into a plaque that said Texas was the National Champion. Arledge also promised Broyles to televise the Arkansas season opener the next season against Stanford, there was a lot of maneuvering done before the game was played because of this.

Having been to the 2004 game in Fayetteville, I highly recommend making the trip if you can. To me, away games always feel like Texas versus the world, which makes for a great time. That experience is greatly amplified at Arkansas because they hate us so much. But it's a beautiful setting, and their stadium is nice. A win there and their redneck trash leaving dejected make for a perfect fall afternoon.

As crazy as it sounds, spending the night in Oklahoma is probably not a bad idea.

And, as I think I’ve mentioned already in this thread, there is major hot ass on that campus. Always has been…

Pretty long post, but here are the OL grades from the Florida game per Dunlap on OB (tl;dr best-graded game for the OL since he started the deep dig). He also compared the grades of the OL this year to Flood's first year.

QUICK FINAL THOUGHTS

Here's something we've never seen at Texas under Sark and Flood: a jumbo set with Cam Williams overloaded on the left side with Banks.

Unfortunately, it ended up being a penalty for Williams, and although it was not of the pre-snap variety that Coach Sark hates so much, it was a penalty nonetheless and penalties have obviously been a blemish on an otherwise amazing season. He's now up to 10 of them. You might look at the snaps-per-disruption-allowed numbers above and wonder how a guy who is putting up enough scores in the truly high-level NFL prospect range to now be considered a basic lock to go pro can be so low in the historical context charts for snaps/disruption allowed. Penalties are why, of course. Without those penalties, he'd be sitting at 41 snaps per disruption allowed, which would paint a completely different picture.

- But, we've buried the lede here, and that is that the offensive line played it's best game -- in totality -- of the season and the best overall game by an entire unit in the history of the Deep Dig. All players put up scores in the Deep Dig in the 80s, including the first trip north of 80 for Jake Majors.

Sam Pittman was talking about the Texas team this week in his press conference and highlighting the fact that this was not the same Texas team that his pigs faced back in 2021, not even close. And he's right, of course.

You know that by just looking at them. Seeing the development both physically and within the framework of their respective, various on-field systems. And we have the Deep Dig to give context in these matters, so we looked into it.

Now, we're here to talk about the offense in this edition of the column, but to just sort of highlight the changes in the actual production of the team, let's just use a few examples on defense as well. We have 9 games of data to use from the 2024 season, but let's compare a few numbers to the 2021 season for reference.

In 2021, through 12 games, Texas generated a combined 119 sacks + hits + QB pressures. Through only 9 games so far in 2024 that number already sits at 118. The added pressure has made life easier on the DBs, who have only given up a total, combine 3 (three) coverage burns on the season thus far, projecting to end the year with 4 on the regular season. The 2021 defense gave up 17 coverage burns. In 2021, players in the secondary had an average of a 67% completion rate when targeted whereas in 2024 that number is sitting at just 46%. In 2021, the Texas defense combined for a total of 119 missed tackles whereas the 2024 unit (now sitting at 56 total missed tackles) projects to miss around 75 over 12 games.

But what about the offensive line? Well, sometimes a picture can say a thousand words. Just look at the Deep Dig grades by week and remind yourself of what things looked like back in 2021.

First, remember what the Deep Dig Grading Scale means:
Deep-Dig-2021-OL-GRADING-SCALE.jpg

Now take a walk down memory lane to 2021 and look at the leaderboard, scores by week and averages.
Deep-Dig-2021-OL-Grades-by-Week-.jpg

Now, compare that to this group and try not to give yourself PTSD from everything you've been through with Longhorns offensive line struggles.
Deep-Dig-2024-OL-Grades-by-Week-.jpg

It's perfectly reasonable to be worried about playing an old, bitter rival in a very tough road environment ... and about whether or not we get to see the best version of Quinn Ewers or if the outside-zone run attack is finally going to get its timing and rhythm back this week.

But to take those two items: 1) worries over a recent relative dip in offensive performance in the Vandy and UGA games; and 2) the horrible memories of the 2021 matchup at Arkansas and blend them together into some concoction for anxiety is silly.

Because Sam Pittman is right.

Onward to Arkansas.

I don’t give a fuck about the pundits but Quinn didn’t look right at the beginning of the Florida game either.

I remember when Colt would start off a little cold he would take off running for a big first down and do that crazy spin move to half avoid the first hit then go down. He would pop up and boom, he was in the game and feeling it. Then he would light mother fuckers up.

I think Sark should give Quinn a “pull” zone read or an RPO run early to get him loose and let the first hit he takes be on his own terms. It seems like once he does a little running and getting tackled it makes him realize he’s going to be fine and start staying in the pocket throwing darts.

At least it would make the defense think twice about Quinn instead of assuming he’s going to be a statue and teeing off

I’ve got two of those up there as well… One was top 7% but wanted to go to business school so didn’t even apply to UT as chances were slim/none to get in but “No way I’m even applying to a&m as they are weird…” even though all wife’s family went there (wife was only one in her clan to go somewhere other than a&m). The other kid chose UArk over Tech as he thought Lubbock was a shit hole the cost is about the same with the OOS discount and could room with his twin brother.

We’re headed up for the game tomorrow to see both them for the game and weekend - I’m betting both wear UArk gear to the game as they don’t want to get killed in the student section and by chance, give dad crap if we shit the bed on Sat… And i’ll be wearing my burnt orange all weekend… if anyone knows of a good UT tailgate (since it looks like there won’t be a Surly one), let me know via PM…

FDS texts like I do while drinking. My post yesterday in a thread late, probably 5-6 beers in, I texted the word “actually” in about 4-5 consecutive sentences. I know I shouldn’t post while drinking, but reading it today was kind of embarrassing.

I can’t even recall that thread now.
